Moving to Heidelberg from Canada

General advice on taking the plunge

Hi everyone,

I too am taking to plunge overseas. Leaving my middle-management job and taking a chance on things working out in Heidelberg.

I am planing to freelance teach business english as I have over 1O years experience in procurement and negotiations.

What worries me is finding a place to live and navigating the aliens office without much German knowledge

How have the rest of you made out in similar situations?

first of all, congratulations! it's a bold step, but you'll be glad you did it. second, use the search field at the top right to find all you need and more. i typed in "teaching english" and voila, here are the threads i found. third, why heidelberg? here is the link to that forum. fourth, i hope you're not just thinking you can get off a plane and bob's your uncle? gone are the days of freeloading off the system until that dream job falls from the trees. you can more than likely come to Germany for 90 days on a tourist visa, then turn around and go home, but to live, build a life? well, it takes a wee bit more than just dreams.

Thanks for the information.

Trust me, I know what I am getting into - as someone in their upper 30's I had to do a lot of thinking before deciding on the move.

I plan to stay a year and see what happens and I don't expect it to be a cakewalk. I have already visited Heidelberg twice and have been in contact with a number of schools regarding freelancing. I also have a back up plan of getting a language course visa/
