Karl May (1842-1912) was a famous German writer living and working in Radebeul (the small town north-west of Dresden). His novels about Native Americans and the Orient were bestsellers for many decades. A lot of his stories were also used for movies. You might have heard of the two main characters: the chief of the Mescalero-Apaches Winnetou and his white blood brother Old Shatterhand.

Radebeul organizes every year the Karl May festival where you can experience the lifes of the Native Americans and the settlers. You'll be astonished to find American history alive in a small town in Saxony. See for more information and the detailed programme.

My recommendations are the drumming festival on Friday night, the Pow Wow at Hoher Stein every day, a ride with the Santa-Fé-Express (watch the gold in your pockets) and the Sternreiter on Sunday morning. The Sternreiter are actors who perform Winnetou and come by horse from all over Europe to the festival.

Don't miss it!
