How to register and get a tax card

Advice for newbies in Stuttgart

I recently was offered my first full time job since moving to Stuttgart late last year and my new employers told me I need to Register that i'm living here and then obtain a tax card.

News to me, as I rather naively assumed I didn't need to register! Can anyone tell me how I go about this, specifically in Stuttgart?

Thanks!

I am by no means an expert on this, but this is what I know. Everything you need should be at the town hall (Rathaus or Stadthaus). You need to register your residence at the Einwohnermeldeamt. I was told that this needed to be done within the first week or so after arriving so you may encounter a problem (I don't know). At the residents' office you should receive a registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung) and an income tax card. You'll also need to register at the Ausländerbehörde, which is the alien registration office. You should bring your passport, 2 passport photos (our Stadthaus has a photo machine downstairs– I bet yours does too), and the registration certificate from the residents' registration office. You might also need some confirmation or form from your place of work (my husband did for his). We needed to wait a few days for them to process our residence registration before being allowed to register as aliens; however, this may not be the case for you. I have no idea where the Stadthaus is in Stuttgart, but it should be fairly easy to search for the address on the internet.

(Also, you'll need to re-register every time you change your address or if you move out of Germany.)

I hope that helps.

Hi, if you are a UK citizen, like your profile says, then you only need to register your address. When you do this, you should also get a Lohnsteuerkarte (tax card) which you give to your employees. You don't need the residence permit, but ask for a Freizuzigkeitbescheinigung (sp) which basically does the same thing, it is for EU citizens who can support themselves to show they can live in Germany.

How come you did not register shortly after arriving here?
(If you are in Stuttgart how come your "location" is UK)

Did you do no research before coming here? About every second thread here talks about registration... huh.gif
