Hello All,
My father is a chef in the United States and is coming to visit me in July. He loves German bread and wants to take an artisan baking class while he is here. The problem, of course, is that he speaks absolutely no German. I'm wondering if anyone is aware of a place to take cooking classes in English, or has any suggestions. One friend said I might be able to set up a sort of internship for a day or weekend with a local bakery, but I'm not really sure how to go about doing that. Any thoughts and ideas are thoroughly appreciated!

You would just need to talk to someone in personell with these companies. I had a couple of days in the cafe Paris last week and I only talked to the head chef to get in there. I dont think there should be such a big problem - but since he's handling food he will have to go to the local "Gesundheitsamt" and obtain a health certificate. THis is quite easy these days. You go there, they have leaflets in English you read through. When called up you simply sign a piece of paper stating you have read the leaflet, have none of the mentioned diseases and pay them some cash. That's it.

Hi Laurel,
I can make a few phonecalls for you when we're back if you like, maybe just ask at some good bakeries like Effenberger (who make only wholegrain stuff afaik) if they take "Praktikanten" (interns). In our school system, if you go to Hauptschule or Realschule you generally get to do an internship at a company when you are in 8th resp. 9th year, this is for preparation for your working life. So if an enterprise accepts interns, they might as well accept your Dad.
I have a couple of days more off when we come back, plenty of time to make some calls.
I can also ask my friend Chris, the Chef from Casse Croute, he had Ted there for an internship for a while, so might appreciate your Dad's help - and as far as I remember he makes some reallz nice bread...
OT: we did the big shopping tour today, have some corn tortillas for you

@Hammonia, That would be amazing if you would do that. I know he'd be into Effenberger. He loves the real whole grain black breads and such, and would love to learn how to make the real thing.

We should be back on Sunday around two p.m. if there's not too much traffic, please give me a call some time Sunday (I would probably forget...), then you can give me a little more info on your Dad, just in case they ask...
Apart from Effenberger, there's also two small bakeries, of one of them I even know the daugther of the owner, we used to be friends as teenagers, but don't know if she remembers me, anyway, those two bakeries (one in Schnelsen and one in Niendorf) only bake stuff for their own shops, so no big chain, not just heating up pieces of dough that have been produced in a factory, but real handcraft there ... Can call those two as well if you like.

Hi there!
just in case, here is a contact of my friend, an American lady, she has her own catering business. She actually specializes in desrts, so it's not exactly what you are looking for, but who knows she might help. Her name is Tina Lai, here is the link
http://www.tinalaigourmet.net/contact.html good luck!
PS haven't seen you guys in ages!
speaking of cooking...
a student of mine told me about a place in the Schanze that might be fun for an TT event.
It's a restaurant that you rent and do all the cooking yourslef. I think she said it costs about €200, and they do all the cleaning. It seats 20 people or so.
sound like fun?

sounds like a lot to oragnise, it not all about cleaning
do you have this talent, tor?
not really all that difficult
we find a day or two when the place is available.
See who's interested. there has to be at least 20 confirmed guests (or what ever the number is)
everybody brings their own stuff.
we have fun.

@Hammonia, those little places sound perfect! I will call you on Sunday.
@ Darjeeling, Nice to have a contact, thank you.
@Tor, Might be fun. Why don't you put up a thread in Events and Meetups and see if there's any interest?
