Commuting from Tubingen to Patch Barracks - Germany

Info and advice on how doable this is
kimpg
Hi - can anyone tell me if a commute from Tubingen to Patch Barracks is feasible? Thanks.
Nicole
By car or public transport? All I know is that by car it can be a bit of a nightmare on the B27 in the mornings. Generally it's a journey of about 30 minutes in a good day.

Cheers, Nicole!

It looks like there is bus service, but from what I can tell, that's a long ride with stops, etc. - so if anyone knows about the traffic conditions, I'd love to hear about it! Tubingen looks like a great place to live, but a dreadful commute would change our minds for sure. However, we currently live in southern California, and we're from DC, so our idea of a dreadful commute might be out of whack. ;-)

A sample timetable for today (Tübingen to Patch Brracks) can be seen here http://www2.vvs.de/vvs/XSLT_TRIP_REQUEST2.
It takes about an hour and a half to commute one way and you will have to first take the regional train ® and then the fast local train (S) and then take a bus again to get there - I am assuming you would like to know about the public transport.

In BW, I know of people who usually drive up to the station and then take the trains to their destination to avoid the rush hour and parking problems in the city. Besides, you could catch up on your reading or your sleep when commuting by train.

You can look up schedules for the rest of the week under www.vvs.de , and choose English as the language if you find the German version difficult.

BTW, why do you want to live in Tuebingen ? Living closer to the Patch Barracks in Vaihingen might be a better option - then you could just walk it up !

Thanks, SP.

No reason, really. We're moving to the area next year, and I was just doodling around the internet looking for cool places to live. We like an urban environment with shops and services within walking distance, and we need a house rather than an apartment (we have several pets - no kids). Tubingen just looked, at least on the internet, like our kind of place.

I'll have to look at Vaihingen, then! Thanks for all the help. Looks like Tubengin is going to be too much of a haul for us.

An interview with expat Rob which also links to his blog about living in Stuttgart (Vaihingen is a part of stuttgart but really outskirts - clean, green and convenient - may be of interest to you. Here is the link:

Hi. You will probably have to see when you get here. Tubingen is great and we would live there in a heartbeat. However, the commute to Patch can be a bit much. i would say 45 minutes avg. sometimes more and sometimes a BIT less. We lived in LA and DC so our idea of a commute is probably the same as yours. We were in Tubingen today and we loved it. For city living, I would live there rather than Stuttgart. You just have to decide if the commute to Patch is worth it.

Thanks, everyone! Now I'll just busy myself with more research and trip planning! Cheers.

You know, you could always live in Herrenberg. That's another cute town right off the autobahn on the way to Tubingen. We live in Ammerbuch-Pfaffingen, which is about 5 miles from Tubingen. It takes my husband about 30 minutes to drive to Patch from there. Herrenberg is about ten miles north of Pfaffingen (maybe 15 miles from Tubingen), so it's closer to Patch. There's a great train station there. My husband takes it to get to the airport when he goes TDY. It's bigger than the town where we live with lots of conveniences, yet still very quaint.

Herrenberg also supposedly has a state of the art vet who speaks English and accepts walk ins.

The town has a Web site in English, too.
