I have been in Hamburg for 6 days now and took vinegar for granted back home in England. I am used to using it quite a lot. There was some of this white 'essig essence' in Lidl however it looked like it should be used to pickle onions and guerkins etc Is vinegar not used here? I assume this is why I cannot find salt and vinegar crisps?

Any supermarket. Look for Aceto balsamico (balsamic vinegar), Rot- und Weißweinessig (red and white wine vinegar), Apfelessig (cider vinegar), Reisessig (rice vinegar), to not buy Essigessenz - it is the Devil's sputum and only useful for descaling kettles. The only vinegar that's hard to find is, sadly, malt vinegar.
Edit: Salt and vinegar crisps (Walkers) are available from "Subway" fast food chain, the lesser quality German Essigchips are available from Edeka.

Leila.m, meet
Google.
And before declaring that you must have malt vinegar, has it occurred to you to try some of the others?

There is no substitute for malt vinegar!
Out of desperation I used to put other vinegars on my chips at the work canteen but nothing tastes similar.

Food from home is where I get my malt vinegar (or, in
Munich, Pomeroy and Winterbottom - but it's a bit more pricey):

Then your original question should have been "where can I find malt vinegar?", not "do the
Germans not use vinegar?".

for your malt vinegar you could always try one of the two English shops:
British shopping in Hegestr., Eppendorf or
English Books and Food in Stresemannstr.
They also have a huge selection of walkers ...
