This week, we're meeting on Wednesday at 7pm at Mongo's BBQ, which is Mongolian cuisine.

It's located at:

Josephsplatz 10
90403 Nuremberg, Germany

(Click here to it on Google Maps)
garrett
Just for fun, I made a really cheezy movie-like audio promo together:
http://box.decenturl.com/adventures-promo

Also, I wanted to point out that even through "BBQ" is in the name of this week's venue, it's not what you might think of barbecue (technically, it's neither Mongolian nor barbecue, according to Wikipedia... and it has other sorts of food there, too.)

See you there this Wednesday!
Lavender Rain
Thanks for posting this. I cleared my calendar for Wednesday in anticipation of this.
Tyfani
yay for mongolian bbq that isn't mongolian bbq. hehe I will be there. I will let you know if Mark and his parents are coming as soon as I find out. I will also ask my italian/american friend to see if he is up for coming. He seems to eat out a lot too so I think he would like it. smile.gif As usual I will be a tad late probably due to work but will be there 15-20 minutes afterwards.
Ex-Seattleite
Such genius creativity and effort deserves to be rewarded. I see that Adventures in Eating Out has made the Toytown front page headlines. Very cool!
I have a feeling this will be the start of something truly fantastic.
Very much looking forward to the kick-off of this Wednesday!

PS: Lavender Rain, looking forward to meeting you.

zoemma
Hey all,

I just moved to Nürnberg and have been wanting to find new people and new restaurants in the city. So if you don't mind seeing a brand new face in the group, please count me in.

Zoë
Ex-Seattleite
Welcome, Zoë! You've come to the right place. We always love to see new faces. Looking forward to meeting you on Wednesday.

smile.gif S.
Seby
I've waited ALL my life to be famous. Who knew it would take moving to Nurnberg to make the front page of ANYTHING? wink.gif Awesome job, Garrett...just what we need to amp up our Wednesday nights.
Tyfani
So guess who doesn't have to come late this Wednesday??? ooh ooh ME!!! I get tomorrow off of work so I will not only be there but most likely be early. whoo hoo! It sounded like Mark is coming but I think I won't know for sure until tomorrow. I'd get him on here but he only has net access at work and he's off the next few days since his parents are in town. New faces sounds pretty cool to me. Of course to many I'm a rather new face too. Looking forward to AIEO! (just need to add a U word and we'd have all the vowels lol)
MadAxeMurderer
This sounds like a good plan. Unusually I'm in Nürnberg this Wednesday and will come along. Hope they can handle vegetarians. Most Mongolian barbeques kinda manage.
garrett
MadAxe: Great! Yep, despite the "BBQ" in the name, they certainly can handle vegetarians. (I was there once with Seby, and they managed to make food for me just fine.)

You can either expensively (I think around € 9) toss a lot of veggies in the bowl (although I don't know if they have a clean meat-free spot on their grill at this place), or order off of the menu. Last time, I had them make some custom veggie + noodle dish, and it was under € 3 — my meal plus beer was around € 6!
Tyfani
So Mark will be joining us again but not his parents and my other friend from class may join us later after dinner or something.
garrett
So here's the official list of people who posted who are attending (in posting order):

1) garrett
2) Lavender Rain
3) Tyfani
4) Ex-Seattleite
5) Zoemma
6) Seby
7) MaxAxeMurderer

Then, Tyfani said that Mark is joining us again, so that's great!
8) Mark

Also, I was contacted off-forum about two others who will probably be attending.
9 & 10.

If you haven't posted yet, you should post soon! (:
(Getting a somewhat accurate count is nice.)

So... I think I shall reserve a table for 10. If others show up (which is encouraged!) then we will probably be able to pull up a couple more chairs on the ends, and possibly push another table together.

I will be making the reservation in an hour or two, giving anyone else a "last-minute" posting opportunity. smile.gif
garrett
Oh yeah! I forgot to mention (in case anyone else is the first one there for whatever reason), I will be making the reservation under the name "Toytown", just fwiw.
garrett
Reservation made for 10 people @ 7pm under the name of "Toytown".

For everyone's reference, Mongo-BBQ's phone number is: 0911 2 16 59 15 (as found on Das Telefonbuch).

(It was odd that Google did not have their number listed.)

See you there! biggrin.gif
Seby
Will be late...as usual. But I AM coming. smile.gif

S
garrett
Seby: Thanks for the heads up. See you soon! wink.gif
garrett
Hey everyone!

So what did you think of Mongo's last week? Pretty cool, huh?

(I guess I got a slightly cheaper drink last time, but a little over € 7 for both the custom noodles + vegetables dish and a beer is still quite good.)

So I started a list of restaurants, both places where we're planning on going, and places where we have already gone and published it here:
http://spreadsheets.google.decenturl.com/a...restaurant-list

Send in your suggestions, either by:
  • Posting here
  • Sending me a PM
  • Sending me an email
  • Updating the spreadsheet yourself!
I have sent out invitations for everyone whose email I have who attended past Wednesday. (If you want me to include you too, then just send me a PM with your email address. Other people who were invited to edit can invite others too.)

So where should we go next week? I know a lot of people want to go to some Thai restaurant. I've heard a suggestion of "SAPA", a Vietnamese place as well. (And there are more on the list, too.)

Post where and why, and we'll wind up going! smile.gif
garrett
Calling all Adventurers!
The theme of this week's quest is "bridging the past and the future". (What on Earth does that mean? Read on!)

This week's restaurant of choice is quite esoteric and could be dangerous (as it's new to all of us, so it's unexplored territory). One of our most cherished operatives in the field was tipped off about its presence early this week (basically, Monday morning) when a flyer was quietly slipped onto her detective's desk... by a shady anonymous tipster.

[We interrupt this story to bring you the exclusive executive summary. Details of this developing news report will appear immediately below...]
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

O-sha
Jakobstraße 13
90402 Nuremberg, Germany
Phone: 0911 242 93 34

(This much we know: it's Thai cuisine, both of the traditional and modern varieties.)

We will meet at the designated coordinates (Lat: 49.448884 Long: 11.073414) on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at 7pm sharply.

If you can't make it at 7pm sharp, you certainly may meet us late at "7pm softly". wink.gif

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
[Now, onward, as we explore the Internet's jungles of mystery... ]

O-sha is shrouded in secrecy, but your operatives in the field have already discovered many things about this restaurant. Let's examine the evidence collected so far:

Clue #1) The main page is http://o-sha.de/ — and there's not much there. Using my secret German decoder ring (Google Translate), I have recently uncovered that the white text on page seems to mean to "Here is your newly created Internet presence."

Clue #2) Going back to our own trusty trailblazer (a search engine), we have uncovered yet another mystery. It seems that the public site linked above is just the locked front door to this secretive society. There's another entrance. Let's take it. http://www.spookie-bernd.de/osha.php Yes, it's quite "spookie", so watch out... Where does it lead us? Wow! This page looks much more complete! — or is it?

Using my expert skills, I have uncovered that the foreign language you're now reading on this new site is also not English... and this time it's not even German! What is it? Well, the answer, my dear readers, is that it is Latin. Now, as I am a designer, I have much familiarity with this special text and can tell you exactly what this Latin means. Yes, seriously. This is a very well known body of work that is world-renowned for its utility. To roughly translate its meaning in one fun run-on, I would quickly tell you that it means, "This is not finished, but the poor monkeys locked in the mines pushing pixels for peanuts have not (yet) received the final copy (text) from their cruel overlords and, therefore, slammed some Latin in the layout to 'greek' out the visual look to an approximation." (Those in the know call it "Lipsum", which is a portmanteau of "Lorem Ipsum".)

So, there's even more supporting evidence that this place is new... (or is, at least, getting a new website). Still, we'd like to believe it is new, so we're going to believe it is (at least until proven otherwise).

Now, what is all this malarkey about "bridging the past and future"? As I have already established that this place is new, and we're talking about going there in the (near) future (Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at 7pm), grounds have been established about this being new and future-thinking.

"So what's this about the past?" you say. I hear ya. Many of us have and sometimes still (and some even intend to too) attend the wonderful Curry nights on Thursday. There has been much talk over the length of many moons about trying Thai, but CoT (for reasons unknown) has been traditionally tied to Indian curry only. Well, we're adventurous, and we're going to sample the forbidden curry of Thailand this Wednesday. Along for the ride, a fellow curry maniac (Antone_Capone) will make his guest appearance before he ventures into uncharted waters (the sprawling rivers and canals of Amsterdam). In a few simple choice words, we're basically having a curry of a different sort with our good friend before he ventures off into the sunset.

Now, here's what you need to do to make this night a success! Post early (and post often?) about attending! If you can't attend, but are interested, let us know (because we like you). More importantly, if you can attend, that's for you to know and us to find out. Post here that you are interested in attending and promise show up. We're counting on you! Adventures in Eating Out is people! Um... yeah... people... people eating out and having a great time, that is.

Have I forgotten anything? I hope not. (I hate it when that happens.) If you have a question, just post it here in this "thread" (what you're reading now.. there's even a button below you can click to add a reply) or send me a "PM" (private/personal message) through the site.
zoemma
wow, perhaps someone should be controlling your coffee intake :o)

I'm in. I love Thai and look forward to eating at such a mysterious place.

Zoë
p.s. people up for drinks at my place afterwards? Let me know so I can stock up ahead of time and we won't have to go searching for gas stations.
Ex-Seattleite
Our Garrett is simply high on life in Nuremberg rolleyes.gif

I'm also down for O-sha. It's the newest Thai restaurant in Nuremberg. So, let's go and find out if it's the BEST Thai place in town.

And Zoë, I'm down for drinks at your place afterwards.

Should be a fun night! smile.gif
Tyfani
I will definitely bet there and I would count Mark in too as it seems he shall become a regular with us. smile.gif Drinks afterwards are a bit sketchy at this point, but seeing as I have class tonight I should be able to get a better idea and let you know as soon as possible.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I will be one of those ''arriving at soft 7pm''. My boss has some weightloss program she is starting and of course it is on wednesday nights for the next 8 weeks so the husband is supposed to come and relieve me at my usual time, but that usually takes a bit longer than with the mom. I will be there asap though.
Tyfani
So just me, no mark for dinner. He works until 10pm.
garrett
certain:
1) garrett
2) zoemma
3) ex-seattleite
4) tyfani ("soft 7pm")
5 & 6) two people who told me they would attend in a PM (also "soft 7")

m.i.a.:
7) antone_capone – it really sounded like he'd come, but he hasn't posted in this thread, so who knows?

hopefully:
8) seby? are you back in town? smile.gif
9+) other people reading this thread who haven't posted... yet!

(today is a lowercase day!)
MadAxeMurderer
Beleive it or not I'm going Italian tonight, and I'm not paying which is quite good because based on past experience I'm going to consume about Euro 200 worth of really good wine.
Komland
I can't make it this Wednesday, or next. I should be around for the one after though. See you all then hopefully...

QUOTE (monkeys at typewriters @ Apr 21 2008, 9:52 pm) *
CoT (for reasons unknown) has been traditionally tied to Indian curry only.

I can only guess that it boils down to courage. Thai on CoT has happened when a courageous TT'r with a taste for something new grabbed the wheel and drove that week. Anything can happen on CoT - there are no rules and no rulers. Opportunities are only lost to the faint of heart. And for the not-FoH - venture after the adventure to Sur Mandir this week -> CoT.
Seby
Hello All,

I was sick ALL week AND had company from the states...at the same time. So I didn't make it. sad.gif
garrett
This week's adventure: A little Italy in Nuremberg

Gondolas on the Pegnitz, people wearing gaudy masks, shops selling murano glass...

It's officially Venetian week in Nuremberg—so what more fitting place for us to meet and dine other than Vapiano?

Vapiano
Königstr. 17
90402 Nuremberg, Germany
(It's right next to Lorenzkirche — click here to see it on a map)

We're meeting on Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at 7pm.

The concept behind Vapiano: It's a mashup of fast food ordering and slow-style made-to-order Italian cooking. The way it works is that everyone is given their own restaurant-specific credit card upon entering, and you charge everything to that card when ordering. When you're done dining, you hand the card to a cashier on the way out and pay your tab.

(If the service is bad, you only have yourself to blame! wink.gif )

I've been there once already, and it was quite good. We'll have an amazingly great time this upcoming Wednesday.

Note: The following day is May 1st, which most people around here have off. biggrin.gif As such, I imagine that it is likely we may have an after-adventure adventure, possibly at a bar or some other place with drinks. Plus, we need to celebrate Antone_Capone's going away to Amsterdam again! (He said he'd be there "for sure" this Wednesday.)

See you all there! (Post if you're interested and/or planning on attending!)
Ex-Seattleite
I'm intrigued, Vapiano sounds like the perfect restaurant/fast food place to be explored by our group! Can't wait. Maybe a gondola ride for dessert smile.gif
And a visit to one of the many great bars/pubs to top off the night.

What can I say other than: Looking forward to Wednesday!

Miss Ex-Seattleite
zoemma
Reminds me of a favourite restaurant in Toronto called Le Marché. So you have me on two counts: I'm totally in the mood for Italian and I want to check out the venue.

See you Wednesday.
Zoë
Tyfani
Mark and I will be there but at tad late. I work til 7 or so. We'll probably get there about 7:30. Looking forwrad to it. smile.gif
garrett
confirmed:
1) garrett
2) Ex-seattleite
3) Zoemma
4) Tyfani

probably going to be there (as that's what was heard at the party last Saturday):
5) Antone_Capone
6) Seby
7) Catch22 (+1)

Just by the nature of Vapiano, I don't think we need to phone in a reservation (and probably can't, even)... especially on a Wednesday (as it's not the weekend). Still, it would be nice to know approximately how many people are coming, so that we can get a semi-accurately sized table. I'm guessing a table that accommodates 8 would be great.

Looking forward to tonight!
Tyfani
Well mark and I will be later than expected. The father scheduled a massage til 7pm so he won't be here until 7:15 or 7:20 which means I don't get to leave til then or later. ugh a little upset that I just got told after coming in earlier today than previously expected. so save a place (well two, one for me and one for mark) and a nice glass of wine for me and I'll join you asap.
aweidenh
Hi everyone,

I can't resist coming by tonight, I am really wanting to see the people i met last time (a while back) and am particularly intrigued to meet zoemma who's canadian! The thing is, I will have a baby in tow so it will really be more of a walk-through, maybe a quick drink. If i had a car, the keys would be left in the ignition with the engine running. For potential critics who are looking forward to tonight's gathering as a respite from their own children, or who may be thinking i'm too cheap to get a babysitter (just too dissorganized) don't worry, will gracefully vanish the moment baby starts destroy stuff, cry or poo. That said, I very much look forward to seeing you all tonight, so please add 1.5 more to reservation.
Antone_Capone
This better be worth my time. Garrett, you know my current status is best described as "money rich, time poor".
mudgum
I plan to join this week. I will be bringing a guest.
Seby
Will be coming tonite...but not until later. Do hope to see everyone as it sounds like it'll be a large group. Bringing Paul...the newest addition to my ever revolving door...
mudgum
Antone and I will be a little late. Probably around 7:30pm.
Lavender Rain
As much as I would like to join your group today I'm stuck at a boring conference in Frankfurt today. Hope to join you next week.
aweidenh
Somebody is really grumpy. Hope to meet you all next Wednesday though..
Tyfani
Okay everyone, Garret is leaving before our next wonderful adventure so I thought I would take over this one time. I leave the morning after our fabulous get together for the states and will not return for a good 3 weeks later so someone will have to take over for the next few weeks after me anyways.

As we continue to branch ourselves out I though going mexican would be fun. I absolutely love mexican food and I know for a fact that this restaurant has vegetarian dishes that have been approved previously by Garrett. (Which also makes it nice because now he's technically not missing out on anything new) The decor is really nice as well.

So...

Wenesday May 7, 2008
Where?? http://www.enchilada.de/Enchilada
Time?? 7pm as normal
I will be a bit late myself becuase of work, but I'm sure you all will get along fine without me to start it off.

Enchilada Restaurante y Bar Mexicano

Hope to see you all there! I will be making the reservation during my lunch break Wednesday (around 13:00) so please try to post before then so I know. Of course even if you don't post please still come!
zoemma
Thanks for taking over the job of organizer Tyfani. Mexican sounds great and I can easily be there for 7pm. Just look for a lonely girl with her head in a book. and since my roommate comes back this weekend to ruin all my fun of having the apartment to myself, I cordially invite everyone back to my place, even if you can't make dinner.
Ex-Seattleite
Mexican sounds good. Haven't had a burrito in a while. I'll be there by 7 PM. smile.gif
Tyfani
wow okay, well it seems like it will be a small group tonight. Just the four of us? I got a pm from another Toytowner who said he might possibly join us but it didn't sound very definite. So as of now we have Zoemma, Ex-seatalite, me, and mark. And of course mark and I will be a tad late due to my job. Mark also has to leave about 9:40 because of work. sad.gif

Anyone else coming???
Tyfani
I must say I am super proud of myself. I just made a reservation in german whoo hoo. It is under my name, Tiffany, for those of you who get there before me. See you girls tonight!
MadAxeMurderer
I just might turn up a tad later for drinks, not going to eat, I mean hell its not curry now is it.

But with my 3 favourite girls in all Nürnberg, ooops sorry Sue I mean 3 of my 4, I mean I don't know what I mean.
Tyfani
Okay guys, since I've been gone no one has taken this over which is kinda sad to see. sad.gif But I'm back and therfore think it's time for us to go exploring again! I know a lot of people have been traveling as well though so drop a post here if you are in town and open to going somewhere this coming wednesday. Feel free to make suggestions too.

btw, since I'm the first one to post I changed the time to 7:30 as I know I won't be able to get anywhere before that time. If there is a problem with that just let me know.
garrett
Tyfani: Yeah, you, Ex-seattleite, and myself were all out of town for the past month (more or less).

Any suggestions on where to go? Our ongoing list is at:
http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pZF...vs2cdItqPT0ugAA
(I've added a few more places to the list.)

After being in the US for a few weeks, I'm ready to eat just about ANYTHING. (Not that I'm too particular normally.)
Ex-Seattleite
If it ends up being just you and me, we could go to Polidori's. If there are non-vegetarians, maye the Taj Mahal on Johannisstr ... I know you had a not so good experience there last time. But maybe it's time to give them another chance smile.gif
