I have just discovered that I have an wheat allergy, and was wondering if there is a shop in Hamburg which specialises in these products. I have asked in a few bakeries for wheat-free bread, and they have no idea where i can find it.

I'm not quite sure but I think your looking for "Dinkelbrot" but I don't know for sure if there's wheat in it too? Available in all health food stores (theres a good one in Barmbek on Fuhlsbüttlerstr. but I'll drop by and ask there today if u like).

There has been threads about where to get Gluten Free stuff, try the search in the upper right corner.
Rewe now carries in their Bio Section a large selection of Gluten Free products.

Theres a chain of health food shops called Vitalia, have a great selection of wheat and gluten free, look for the yellow packaging.
Kaufland and Real also do some occasionally, its a range called Dietary Specialities in purple packaging.

Thanks for the additional info, I went to Rewe last night and could not find anything but Rice Cakes, the shop assistance were very unhelpful telling me that unless I had a brand name it was impossible. I shall try to look for Vitalia and will try Real this evening.

It would help to know if you are able to have Spelt (an ancient form of wheat) or must stay away from wheat it all forms. If you are able to eat Spelt, look for things with "Dinkel" in the ingredients list. At my local BioMarkt I can get bread, crackers, cookies and the like all made from Spelt/Dinkel. Unfortunately I haven't found any pasta yet.

Oh yeah, and in Berlin a lot of the Vitalia shops are found at the train stations, so might be the same case in Hamburg.
The brand in Vitalia is called Schaer, (with an A umlaut.)

Dinkelnudeln (pasta made from spelt flour) are also available from the health food shops, ie Basic Bio, Vitalia etc, so you should try looking there again!
Anything gluten-free which (usually) be wheat-free too, in case you want to follow Carm's advice. However I've found that most gluten-free products taste crap in comparison to wheat-free products.
You can also eat rye flour (Roggenmehl) products which are wheat-free, i.e. Roggenbrot, rye bread.
Also products which substitute wheat flour with rice flour, such as Asian rice/glass noodles/vermicelli.
Good luck!

Sadly you're not wrong about the GF stuff tasting crap, but the Schaer stuff is really ok, its... edible.
Anything with Buckweizen (buckwheat) i think should be ok as if i remember rightly its not actualy a form of wheat, despite the name.

In Hamburg-Bergedorf, there's a large Walmart-like store called
Marktkauf. I was there just before the Pentecost weekend started and noticed they have a section of gluten-free products and ingredients, i.e. flour made from a mixture of rice, potato and corn.

You could also try Soba, Japanese buckwheat noodles. But make sure that the brand you buy doesn't include wheat flour as a) it's not real soba, and b.) well,.. it's bad for you!

Around here, the DM Markt carries a lot of GF stuff, including the Schaer range.
Good that gluten-free food is becoming easier to find in Germany, but it's still years behind other countries, where plenty of GF food can be found in any supermarket, and nearly all products are well labelled...

You need a good health food store - here's a list of some in Hamburg:
http://www.naturkost.de/nkl/hamb.htm Obviously the bigger ones will have the greatest selection.
I usually go to this one:
basic - der frische Bio-Supermarkt., (PLZ: 20259), Osterstr. 112 / Haltestelle Osterstraße (U2), Tel.: 040-8080548-0, Fax.: 040-808054839, E-Mail: info@basic-ag.de, Öffnungszeiten: Mo-Sa: 8.00 - 20.00 Uhr
It's fabulous, huge selection of everything..including Arche Bancha tea!
enjoy!
