Stores for furnishing and decorating an apartment

Recommended shops for buying furniture etc.

So of course I know the obvious IKEA, and I read the thread a while back where some people had recomended IKEA alternatives. But I was wondering if someone could let me know about such things like german hardware stores? à la Home Depot or Canadian tire. Also, beyond the big stores with everything in one place, I would appreciate recommendations for small fun shops with funky, new, original decoration items. I'm also looking for lamp stores as I know you usually can find such specialized stores with prices comparable to IKEA, and with a larger selection.

My idea is to buy the big/necessary pieces at IKEA and then to take my time and shop around for the rest and so acheive something with more character/originality.

Second hand is also awsome. I know of kijiji, craigslist and zweite hand online. Are there any others (online/ or actual shops in Berlin)?

Any suggestions very much appreciated.

Many thanks. Can't wait to live in Berlin

HI - I was in Stilwerk last week - lots of lovely modern things (unfortunately at less than lovely prices) but worth a peep for window shopping or the odd item here or there. There was a shop near the cafe on the ground floor that sold nice door mats if I remember correctly. Anyhoo - there's lots of info at http://www.stilwerk.de/berlin-haus.php.

Also I think there is a big furniture place next to Ikea at Sud Kreuz - it looks huuuge. Its called Moebel Kraft and its at http://www.moebel-kraft.de/

Not sure what the prices are like but it looks cheap and cheerful (famous last words!)

Happy Shopping.
