Where to buy honey bread - Berlin

And what is it called in German?
bdk
Hi,

I love the german breads and have eaten more bread in the 6 months I have been in Germany than I probably have in the previous 3-4 years.

The one bread I have been looking for is something equivalent to whole wheat honey bread. What is it called here and can someone recommend a place I can buy it in Berlin (I live in Charlottenburg)? I prefer whole loaves over pre-sliced so that would be preferable as well.

One additional question. It would normally take me 4-5 days to consume an entire loaf. What is the recommended way to store the bread. In the fridge or out?

Thanks
Small Town Boy
I've never heard of anyone storing bread in a fridge before, but I guess there's no reason not too. You basically want to stop in drying out, so wrap it up well or use an airtight container.

Bear in mind that, in a baker's shop, you can usually ask for half a loaf – or, with the very large loaves, a quarter. German bread is freshly prepared and not really intended to last for as long as five days.

Storing bread in the fridge makes it go stale faster but well-wrapped individual slices freeze well and thaw fairly quickly.

Actually, I normally would not store the bread in the fridge but I have noticed that breads I've bought seem to develop mold quite quickly - I assume because preservatives are not used as much here as in the US.

we used to store bread in the **** fridge at home. it was ok. why not simply give it a try with a quarter or so.

A Brottopf is the best method to keep bread fresh for a couple of days ...

Do you actually mean "Honigkuchen"?
It's just not called "Brot". But i think it's what you mean.

Or buy a breadbin i.e. from Ikea. Do they really help though? I found that German bread went stale after 2 days, sometimes 3.

I'd just ask for Honigbrot (honey bread) or Vollkornhonigbrot (whole wheat honey bread) and I'm sure they'll simply figure out which loaves you want to choose from. Around here (I'm in The Eifel) I've never seen any kind of honey bread, though. We do commonly spread honey on our bread... preferrably honey made from Lindenberries. Now that you mention it, though... that is something I miss from back home.

We simply keep our bread in a breadbox. In our house we can consume an entire loaf in 48 hours.
