I want to get my road bike out and am having trouble finding maps in any language that are specifically for road bikes. Many of the bike routes don't have a surface appropriate for them.
Thanks!

what are you on about ?

He's looking for a map that shows suggested routes for road bikes (bicycles). Although you can get cycling maps without any problem, it's often not clear from the map what the route surface is like, and therefore whether it is suitable for a road bike or only for a mountain bike or hybrid.

My suggestion would be to look for suggested routes online. I'm sure there are websites out there specifically for road bikers.

The Bayrische Landesvermessungsamt Muenchen produce some very good 'topographische karten' with a 1:25000 scale. They don't mark the surface, for example in the map that covers Perlacher Forst they don't show which paths are tarred and which are gravel, but they do show every single passable route and tonnes of other detail so they're great and very useful for those of us who don't like to be spoon fed bike routes.

Have you tried the ADFC Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrrad-Club e. V.? I don't know if they provide surface material info, but they are one of the largest groups in Germany for bike riders.

I find the books more useful than the maps which are available. Bookstores and sports stores carry them. They have books with suggested hiking routes but they also have books with nice road biking trips. Aktive sein und schlemmen is one that I have. Another is Die Schönsten Radtouren im Alpenvorland. Type the second one into amazon.de and it will also bring up other similar offers.

Their maps don´t say what the road surface is, but they do mark which normal roads are busy and which are quieter which is already a help. If a bike path is marked on it´s own on the map, with no road next to it, you can pretty much assume that there will be a gravel surface for at least part of it.
The one´s I use are "ADFC-Regionalkarte 1:75.000" with the map of "Bayerische Seen" getting the most use.

Otherwise, take a look in other internet fora, especially those for racing bikes. This one was recommended by some cyclists we were talking to today: http://www.gps-tour.info/

If you want to know the roads in Bayern join a group that's cycling out there. ADAC has a group (specifically for road bikes) that meets at the Tierpark Hellbrun every Wednesday during the summer. This is a popular group always with a knowlegable leader who guides the group.

Also there are some maps that differentiate between schotten wegs and roads ... if you browse through the collection in any Hugendubel you'll see them ...

Also depending on where you live you can join me for some 50km - 160km rides depending on what you're looking for ...

Check out Moser Bike Guides. They contain excellent routes in detail including route profiles and gradients. They cover a lot of Bavaria.

We do loads of bike trips, especially in the mountains round Lenggries, Jachenau and Karwendel.
