Learning German through theater performance

Any interest?
Robinn
I had an idea!!!

Learning German through theater, which would include memorizing a part in a play, and preparing it for performance (a small one).

I think it would be a great way to improve on language skills.

I expect that it would improve fluency, after having memorized lines and practiced them several times in rehearsals. You could learn vocabulary, and it would stick! (for the same reason as above) And I even think it would help with grammar subconsciously (in my opinion the best way to understand grammar).

There would be two possibilities, one would be doing it without help (and without paying). And the other would involve paying a native German for support. I happen to have two people in mind. One is my roommate, and has a lot of theater experience, when I suggested it to her, she already had ideas about plays that would be appropriate. The other is a co-worker of mine (a German teacher) who studied theater and has directed some plays. He is also interested in helping but was sceptical about finding interested participants. I hope to prove him wrong.

Personally I would prefer to pay, and have input from a native speaker, especially one who knows about theater.

Soooo... please post if you have any suggestions, experience and of course, if you are interested.

how about taking a theater course?

practice, fun and friends all at once

Also a good idea, and I will consider it.
The only problem is the level... I imagine most participants are closer to fluent than a person who is learning.

Hey there,

have you already taken the theater course? I'm also looking for possibility to play theater! Both languages (English or German) should be interesting for me! If you have any information about theater course or own performance, please give me a messenger!

Thanks & best regards

I signed up for a course like this at the VHS. It's only one weekend (6,7,8th of June), but I think it will be interesting..

I'm certainly interested, but too far from Muinch (6 hours).

If anyone knows about any theater classes where fluency in German is not required in the Aachen, Cologne, Bonn or Koblenz areas, I'd be very interested. I think it would be great way to improve my languange skills but if the class assumes I speak native level German then I doubt I'd get much out of it and it would be frustrating for the others.

Hi Robin,
How would your theater performance help a new German language speaker like me.
I have the ability to catch up though I might patiently slow but I can give it a try.
Presently I speak over four African languages, conveniently, so I would dare venture to say that I pick up languagees well once I am in the midst of it being spoken.
Cheers

Robinn,

I am very much for the idea. I speak already a bit of german, it is time to polish the language skills. let me know if you found anything already or if you still have some places free for the theater group.

Well with a basic level it would be hard to communicate with the rest of the team. But you don't have to be fluent in German to join. After all your script is known in advance and you have to memories it anyways. So it will enhance your skills but won't learn German there, unless of course in a course similar to the one mentioned above
