Antique wooden aeroplane propeller for sale

Flown from England to South Africa in 1947

Toytown Germany > Discussion forum > South Germany > Munich > Adverts > Items for sale > Miscellaneous items for sale

This is one of two propellers that came off the Gemini flown from England to South Africa by Cecil Lewis in 1947
This propeller was stored by the South African air force Museum in 1969 and then given to Mr. Mike Spence* by Colonel McGregor of the SAAF Museum in the 70’s
The item was refurbished and painted in the 80’s but I started to sand it down a little while ago. Subsequently I decided to sell it. Hence the half sanded cowl.
The propeller comes off the Miles Gemini and I believe it was made by DeHavilland

This item is being sold with the book ‘Gemini to Joburg’ as seen in the photos.
The book is hardback and was published in 1985

If you smell something it is your own cynicism and nothing else eurovol. If you are trying to say something please just say it as whatever it is will most likely be wrong. Are you suggesting there is something wrong with the article, or the price? After seeing your efforts to punt the contents of your garage out on TT I think I can be allowed to advertise what I think is an interesting article. Don't you?

I´ll give you €50. smile.gif

Gotta stop myself here cos this is exactly the kind of thing i would buy but 350 is probably steep enough to put me off thank god.

Much though the offer seems, on the face of it, genuine, the smell comes from the fact that you seem to be a British female living in Zürich who joined this forum 3 years ago, and apart from a couple of basic life questions in your early days here, appear to have made very few waves, until your sale of furniture and this propeller blade in the last few days. While furniture does not raise many eyebrows, vintage propellers are not exactly common currency around here, and one might question your motives. Had you spent the last 3 years commenting on aircraft history, or military memorabilia, maybe the smell might have been somewhat sweeter!

You might contact Alan McNeal Tel (+44) 01189 811794 in the southern UK. He owns or recently sold a Miles Gemini.

For those people of a doubting nature let me cast some light here.
Splatcat is the TT id of my girlfriend. I have been in Munich nearly 7 years. She has for most of that time commuted from London and now lives in Zürich, where I will be moving to shortly (see my post to rent my flat). I guess in the past three years she has had better things to do than spend her time on TT commenting about aircraft history and military memorabilia.
The prop is 100% genuine. Probably the most convincing evidence I can offer is the person who is selling it. My girlfriend is Mike Spence's youngest daughter (see OP). Her dad flies, her brother flies out of Iraq at the moment and her nephew is just about to start his commercial licence. They are a family of pilots and Mike still owns a Hanger so it is not really surprising that he sometimes gets given interesting things like this propeller.
This prop was given to us for our apartment in Munich (where it currently is sitting on top of our bookcase), before Mike gave us an already restored Tiger Moth prop that now hangs in our lounge (that is the restored prop in the photo link). So instead of having the gemini prop doing nothing we have agreed with Mike to sell it. What we get for it is going to Mike who despite being well over 80 still flies regularly and goes out for a Sunday burn on his Motorbike.
This is a genuine offer for a really interesting piece of aviation history. The fact is has past through Mikes hands I think makes it even more so as the guy is a legend amongst the flying fraternity of South Africa. I can remember a few years ago he got myself and the missus slots to go up with the air display team the Sasol Tigers...

http://www.capetown.dj/photo/AirShow/Sasol...SasolTigers.htm

...As we finished the flight and signed the log book one of the pilots noticed that my girlfriends last name was Spence and after putting two and two together and telling the rest of the team was over the moon to have been able to take Mike's daughter up for a spin.

Anyway if the condition of the prop and the story of it does not convince you of it's authenticity then I guess nothing will.

You can get an iProp on Ebay with 12 gig more memory for 124,99€ and it isn't even SIM locked.
Smells of Marmite for those that like that sort of thing.
SpiderPig
I bought an I-scuffle on ebay.. only 1 gig though

Smells like both of the last posters have no idea about history or aesthetics, this is a find but a dear one.

May I suggest www.craigslist.com I used it alot when I was in the states and its now international. Best of luck.

BTW I think its a very cool.
SplatCat
Thanks. I will have a look at Craigslist. Appreciate the last two positive comments. It's nice to know that there are other people who also can appreciate something without it having to have a flat screen and a hard drive.

Splatcat...hope you find a worthy home for that prop, a cool piece of aviation history and a snip a 350...!

25+ years ago when I lived in Cheshire an elderly local (turned out to be great-uncle of a female colleague out in Hamburg) on knowing that I was an aeromodeller (at that time) turned up with a massive aeroplane propeller which he claimed was from "the first spitfire over Addis Ababa". This in the strength of a piece of paper with that statement stuck into a bolt hole on the prop. If is was from the first Spit over A-A how "Uncle Percy" got hold of it baffles all as his whole family denied any connection with the RAF.

Heavens knows what happened to the damned thing - I did not bring it out here...

There have been no negative comments, only skeptical ones. You show up and try to sell a museum piece with little to no details and at a very low price. Think about it in the context of Nigerian scams and look at your first post as if you weren't selling it! Be aware of the world around you or take your snottiness elsewhere thank you.

Eurovol, are you a historical avaition expert or just an impulsive skeptic with nothing else to spend your time commenting on ? The original post did contain quite a lot of info.

Let people sell their stuff, and let those who are interested in it formulate their own opinion as to whether its genuine or not.

Finally, try taking heed of the advise you give in the last line in your hopefully final comment.
