After a lot of disappointment searching for a reliable mature cheddar cheese, I finally found this one at the edeka at the airport. Since then, I have found it at other edeka's (
OEZ for example), and Real (
Euroindustriepark). It is a very acceptable mature cheddar (matured for 16 months), even by UK standards, it is better than most UK supermarket mature & extra mature cheddars.
Unlike the black waxed mature cheddar (which is not much better than this, or possibly worse depending on preference), this is €1.99 for the 200g block. Be careful to get this one though, there is a similar 200g black and clear packaged German Kase...

Well whaddaya know. They have it in the Edeka right by my office. Just tried it and whaddaya know.. it ain't bad!
OK, it aint the best, but certainly better than all the orange rubbery cheddars you get in the supermarkets. Thanks for the tip!

I've got 5 blocks in the fridge, I want to ensure the Edeka / Real keep stocking it :-), I would never recommend it for a cheese board, but then again I've still not found a good enough cheddar around here for a cheese board. It is certainly good enough to cook / make sandwiches with though... Not to mention a nice cheese on toast (once you get over the instructions on the back of the block for making cheese on toast nibbles)

Gräfelfing has a great cheese shop if you're ever over in this direction, the cheddar is quite strong.
Couldn't tell you the price, seems expensive though that may be cos I buy such a big lump of it.

The HIT supermarket has some wedges of dark orange cheddar with red wax casing. It was not behind the cheese counter, but it was with the other chunks of cheeses that are plastic wrapped. I did not buy any because the price was too high for me, but may be worth a try.

I saw some in Tengelman yesterday, but it was Irish Cheddar which was an orange cheese. It didn't look at all like the cheddar I'm used to (light yellow colour) and didn't look like it would taste the same either..

My husband bought a slice of cheddar cheese for me last night at the HIT. I think he got it at the cheese counter--it was wrapped in plastic wrap and then the paper from the cheese counter, but wasn't like a sealed package as in the pictures in this thread. I opened it today and it looks like there is a little bit of mold on one corner. Can I just cut that piece off an eat the rest or do I need to toss the whole thing? V. annoying as its not our usual grocery store so returning it would be a hassle.

Yep. Or even just eat the mould too. I once sat with a weird french bloke eating revolting looking bits of goats cheese that had been, well, rotting away in oak leaves for weeks or something. Delicious.

I always buy cheddar from Marktkauf. It is not covered in red wax. It tastes just like the cheddar we get in South Africa.
Yummy and also cheaper than the
Galeria cheddar.

Many of my fav recipes call for American and/or a good sharp English cheddar. The only thing I found was Irish cheddar, which is too bland for my recipes. Any ideas?

This might not suit your needs, but for mexican or most of my recipes that specifically call for cheddar (quiches, etc), I find substituting is really ok. I usually use a pre-shredded 'mixed cheese' bag from Lidl that is 34% cheddar, 63% 'schnittkase' (whatever that is!). Works great, AND it's packaged as 'light', with only 17% fat. Whether 17% is good or bad, to be honest, I have no idea, but I'd assume it's light-er than most other cheese.
Brand: Linessa (blue bag)
Name of cheese: light Gratin-Kaese gerieben
It's the only shredded, mixed cheese they sell that has some cheddar in it. You can't miss it.

This 'Irish' packaged supermarket cheddar is in fact German. Just look at the little oval mark on the back (which every dairy product manufactured in the EU has to have by law and which gives details of which dairy produced it) and it says De.

Are any of these 'cheddar cheeses' mentioned shredded?
I've tried buying the blocks of irish cheddar and self-shredding, but it is usually too creamy and difficult to work with. Dont try to un-convince me, I've tried multiple times. Plus, I'm lazy and LIKE pre-shredded bags.
So, anyone know of shredded cheddar that's available? I'm happy with my Lidl bag, but am open to new options.

My favourite cheesy anecdote. I worked for a whole year packing cheese in a dairy in the UK. Shit job (as you can imagine) but it bridged a gap at the time.
The 20kg blocks of cheese were taken from a palet of 50, put through a cutting machine, packaged and labelled. At the other end of the line, boxed and palleted again. If the order stipulated that Tesco, for example, needed 200kg of Caerphilly, 200kg of Cheshire, and 100kg of Wendsledale, they took the lot from the same pallet so amazingly, when you stand at your local Tescos contemplating which crumbly white you should buy, it doesn't matter 'cos they're all the same cheese. Also, grated mozerella was infact just very very young cheddar.

My favorite cheese anecdote comes from my grandparents. They were driving through a small town in Oregon some years ago and felt the urge for a picnic. They stopped at the one store in town to buy some cheese and bread and went to the "cheese counter." They asked the young lady behind the counter what kinds of cheese they had for sale. The classic answer? "Oh, we have BOTH kinds of cheese-- white AND yellow."

Never seen shredded cheddar,
Kaufland sell it fairly thinly sliced, but that's probably not much use to you, good for sandwiches though!
Stores here will in fact refuse to grate your cheddar, as it clogs up their machines. Freeze it a bit at home and then grate it, works fine. Also a good method of very thinly slicing a raw steak.

My girls love American cheddar and we use to eat it alot back in the US. So when we moved to Munich I went on a mission to find some. Found some at REWE market. I buy the cheddar blocks from the fine / finer cheese section. I grate it at home and store in a tupperware container. Not cheap - example 3.86 euros for .194 kg. Also found there shredded cheddar cheese packs from the Irish company Kerrygold - like the butter. But they are hard to find in stock. So when I do find them - which was a few moths ago I buy a bunch.

Hi, new here and just over the border in Switzerland (Flumserberg to be precise). I'm looking to expand my British Cheese operation into Germany and Austria, from the comments above there does seem to be a demand for it. We sell via our web shop but also at events and cheese tasting evenings. We only sell proper farmhouse cheeses (most of the dairies I have visited) nothing is "plastic" factory cheese.
Any comments welcomed, nearest big cities to us are Stuttgart and Munich, if anyone knows any good farmers markets in the south we will try to visit them
