Am still coming to terms with living in munich, but am confused as to the startling absence of the good ol' cheddar cheese in the shops.

Can anyone enlighten me? Does anyone know what is going on? Come on, I havent found a single cheese out of the huge multitude of cheeses that can substitute the cheddar. Where can i get some in munich? Dont get me wrong I am not a cheddar fanatic, never missed it till now.
thanx muni

Karstadt occasionally has a decent white cheddar, Cathedral City, prepackaged. But I agree with the frustration. And I *am* a big cheddar fan.

Edeka &
Walmart also do cheddar.

tengelmann do red cheddar. not white cheddar, though. it's expensive over here, so depending on how much you earn you might be better off letting your taste buds adapt

i was in v-markt on saturday cause i no longer live by the euro industry park and loved wal-mart and was looking for a BIG place in my neck-o-tha woods. !. it was a zoo. i wasn't looking for cheddar though, but they have a cheese bar. after shopping at aldi for so long, i forgot what fresh cheese looked like (bought the usual cambozola and french goat cheese. mmm..

I know they definitely have Irish cheddar in the Edeka at the airport. It's reasonably priced as well at about 1.49 or so for a block (200g?).
all this info on cheddar and other
British and American Foods in Munich has long been available in the Guide which is constantly updated...

I was in
Mini Mal in Unterschliessheim the other day and I found some "KerryGold" Irish red cheddar slices. I decided to try them and taste wise they are better than the usual red cheddar that you can get in
Tengelmann.
They are handy enough for sandwiches or putting on a burger.

Kaufland in
PEP has some good stuff high up on the shelf. V-Markt.
Tengelmann has some yellow stuff.

The regular red/gold stuff is OK for cooking (quesadillas, burritos, mac & cheeze, etc.) but is there any place that carries extra sharp?

The best stuff (which is still not THAT good) is the Irish Kerrygold stuff from any branch of minimal (as previously stated)
Do not buy the red muck in tenglemans because it is shit.

They also sell Irish Bauern Käse, which is Irish Farmers' Cheese...it tastes like chedder to me. Most Tengelmen sell it.

You can get an excellent Mature Cheddar in KÄFER but they don't always have it. When I was there on Tuesday the lady showed me that awful orange stuff with the red wax coating (it tastes like soap IMHO), I must have made a face and her collegue rescued me by explaining that the real stuff was on order and expected this week. Sadly, I am not very local to that part of town so it could be a while before I get my fix.

There is a lovely strong scottish cheddar at one of the cheese stalls at the
Viktualienmarkt. It comes in black wax, in a box and costs about 15 Euro.. Fucking ripoff, but quite nice nibbling cheese.

The best cheddar I've found so far is at Basic on Schleissheimer Str.
Sharp and delicious, proper cheddar, plus it's also cert. organic.

My discovery last week in the
mini-MAL at Arabellapark was Kerrygold cheddar cheese slices(prepacked) - great taste and brill for sandwiches or cheese on toast!!

@Madgibson
I hope they weren't packed in that stupid easi-singles style packaging which requires the gentle and hesitant cough of a peruvian virgin to waft the kevlar-reinforced plastic off the cheese. You only get one chance to open it correctly when the moon is in the correct quadrant.
Fail and you spend 15 minutes wrestling with a see-through plastic octupus who sprays pieces of cheese all over.
Or maybe I'm just not handy with customer friendly wrapping.

Oct 26 2005, 1:46 pm
@Yeti
The slices are not individually wrapped (like the processed burger style cheese squares). The packet itself is supposedly re-sealable but that didn't really seem to work. The slices were decent thickness - easy enough to remove. Think there were about 6 slices and it cost EUR 1,99 - cheaper than buying off the counter and then having to throw away the wax coating and ending up with f*** all cheese left!

Hertie always have Cathedral and some red cheddar at their cheese counter, but personnally I'd go and check the cheese stalls on
Viktualienmarkt - they usually have a bigger selection.

The Hit market in the Motorama (
Rosenheimerplatz Sbahn station) has both the wax coated sharper variety, as well as a very good "basic" light orange cheddar which is only .99/100g. Shreds great- not all crumbly like the usual wax coated cheddars I've seen other places. I buy the light cheddar so often that the girl behind the counter no longer even asks me what I want! I use it for mexican dishes, salads, sandwiches...

The METRO wholesaler is doing a cheese special starting Saturday, including various kinds of cheddar:
Irish Land, 200g, € 1.81
Galloway cheddar, 250g, €2.13
Strong Red, 250g, € 2.34
Strong White, 250g, € 2.34
Strong Red (slices), 150g, € 1.70
You have to be a member to shop there, PM me any orders by tomorrow 10 a.m. and I will pick them up.

I would love to but experience says "Strong White" cheddar over here is like ordering an "extra hot" curry in the company of Germans and just won't make the grade.
Mature Cheddar almost has to sting when you put it in your mouth. This will be good enough for cheese on toast at best. mmmmm... Cheese on toast... with worcester sauce...
PM on its was...

agree with Crawlie and Mrs Peel on this.
However, if you like something a little different, HIT offer cheddar cheese made with Port wine. It looks weird but tastes great, though not very strong.

John's Corner Shop has good cheddar (both yellow and the more aged white). We've tried everywhere and agree that every other place the cheddar has been very mild in flavor.
What we really like is you can get it in those vacuum sealed packs that last a few months as opposed to a few days when buying it elsewhere.

According to the flyer, the Strong Red and Strong White are "sehr kräftig", i.e. sharp. Not vacuum sealed, only plastic wrapped.

When I buy cheese in bulk I freeze it. Works fine.

Mar 24 2006, 11:05 am
Ok, sorry, maybe not vacuum sealed, but it's the kind where it is prepackaged (whatever that is called). The main point I was trying to make was that it has an expiry date a few months out so it lasts much longer in the fridge.
Of course, freezing any cheese works fine too as PES suggests.

Hi
Does anyone know where I could find Mature Cheddar Cheese here in Munich? Its the only thing I really miss from back home, have found mild cheddar and cheddar slices, but no Mature Cheddar.
Grateful for help!
Thanks

Dunno what "Mature" cheddar is but you can get Irish Cheddar at the Hit near
Westendstrasse. It's quite tasty.

The maturest stuff I have found is a black waxed roll of scottish cheddar (in a black box if you are looking for it) you can get in the
Viktualienmarkt. 15Eur though for not-a-lot-a-cheese.

After a lot of disappointment searching for a reliable mature cheddar cheese, I finally found this one at the edeka at the airport. Since then, I have found it at other edeka's (
OEZ for example), and Real (
Euroindustriepark). It is a very acceptable mature cheddar (matured for 16 months), even by UK standards, it is better than most UK supermarket mature & extra mature cheddars.
Unlike the black waxed mature cheddar (which is not much better than this, or possibly worse depending on preference), this is €1.99 for the 200g block. Be careful to get this one though, there is a similar 200g black and clear packaged German Kase...

The black-waxed Scottish Cheddar which Tom17 mentioned is possibly the Mull of Kintyre Cheddar which you can buy in truckles or wedges at various Schlemmermeyers in and around Munich.

The Irish Cheddar is stocked by most big Edekas,
Kaufland and Real.
As for real Cheddar Cheddar from 'Zumerzet'... mmm... can't remember when I last had a big chunk of that!
