Anybody recommend a decent cafe to work at?
I have a home office, but it gets pretty lonely here on dark rainy days.
I would like to find some place where I could go and feel like I am part of the human race again and get some work done at the same time.
What I need.
- Free Wireless Internet (research, programming, and a little IM most of my co-workers are 9hrs behind)
- Staff don't mind me sitting there 3 hours in the middle of the afternoon only ordering 1 or 2 coffee/teas
- Decent Coffee/Tea
- Light, I don't really like working in Dark environments
- Access to power
- Some traffic of people coming in going out, chatting
Preferred neighborhoods: Mitte, Prenzlauerberg (near Rosa Luxemburgplatz)
Cafe Maibach Prenzlauerberg fits most of the requirements, but it is rather dark and I would like something even closer to Rosaluxemburg/Alex/Hachessermarkt if such a thing exists.
Please suggest any place! I am polite and good mannered (unlike the last American I came across working at Cafe Maibach) and really would just like to have some human contact while the light of day is shining. My German is fine if I ever get a chance to use it.
Any tips much appreciated.

Sankt Oberholz is what you're looking for. Thousands of people sitting there 5 hours drinking Latte in front of their iBooks. At Rosenthaler Platz (Corner Brunnenstraße/Torstraße).

You could look into a
Jelly, although there doesn't seem to be one in
Berlin yet.
You can
join this lot next time or at least ask them for recommendations.

TobyG. Thanks! I will check it out tomorrow or Thursday and bring my iBook instead of the Dell
thepanda Good idea. I should host one! My place is centrally located (Almstadt & Münz) and while not huge has lots of seating and a nice open plan. If anybody else is interested in this concept PM me. Reminds me of Super Happy Dev House but not as thematically directed.
Kay that one didn't show up on my forum search. I am a bit more on the Tech Geek side, though I did go the University of Chicago as an undergrad which gives me some Academic geek experience. Thanks for the tip.

ah, forgot to mention: if there is no adequate seat for you, go and have a look upstairs
And I think it's self service, but this is maybe even better for you...

I dunno, working in a cafe where everyone else is hunched over their laptops too seems nearly as dull as working at home.
I'm moving to Berlin around June/July and looking to do much the same thing (programming work which allows me to live/work anywhere). Though I can probably manage without power outlets. So let us know if you find some place(s) you like

In Sankt Oberholz at the moment. My biggest complaint, not enough conversation! Yes the Wi-Fi works fine, and there are power-outlets and tons of people on laptops (and no they are not all MacBooks, and my black MacBook is still a bit of a standout), but I was hoping for a little more eavesdropping. I know a weird complaint, but I like some human background noise. I will try at another time of day, but it is a good place to get out of the house and near by for me to go to. The music is good to work too the Latte is fine.

Wow, what a wonderful idea! And to think I had to come to Berlin
from NYC in order to learn about this thing which apparently originated there.

I don't think I'll make this one, but if you continue to host them, please put me on your mailing list. Good luck with the first Berlin Jelly!
