International Press on Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet):

Delightful often hilarious... MacDonald doesn't miss a trick, scattering satirical observations on love and sex, scholarship and Bard like birdseed, while taking full advantage of the slapstick possibilities in Shakespearean cross-dressing.
- The Washington Post

Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet)... is a dazzling romp. MacDonald is a real writer and her play is full of brilliance, wit, insight and theatricality.

In Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet), playwright Ann Marie MacDonald takes us on a farce-filled leap into the lives of Shakespeare’s two great heroines: Desdemona and Juliet.

The mousy academic, Constance Ledbelly, is convinced that Shakespeare’s two most famous tragedies were originally comedies. By a cosmic twist of fate, Ledbelly finds herself transported - literally! - through her wastepaper basket into the worlds of Othello and Romeo and Juliet where all the world really is a stage: sword-fights, villains, passion, war, ghosts, beautiful women, a masquerade ball, girls dressed as boys, boys in love with girls dressed as boys, girls in love with girls dressed as boys but married to boys in love with girls dressed as boys… and, of course, unrequited love and betrayal. A wonderful romp, you don’t have to be a fan of Shakespeare to enjoy this hilarious gender-bending satire about one woman’s journey toward self-realization.

Ann-Marie MacDonald attended the acting programme at the National Theatre School of Canada. She then moved to Toronto where she became involved in creating original Canadian work in a number of contexts: collective creation, collaboration and solo writing. The work always combined theatrical innovation, politics and entertainment. Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet), MacDonald’s first solo-authored work, won the Governor General’s Award for Drama and has been produced throughout Canada. Ms. MacDonald has worked as an actor in theatres across the country and in many independent films and television series. She is host of the CBC series Life and Times and the author of two highly acclaimed novels, Fall on Your Knees and The Way the Crow Flies, in addition to many other theatrical works. MacDonald’s work as an actor and writer has been honoured with a number of awards.

Gina Wilkinson, the director of Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet), was born in Vancouver and grew up in both Canada and New Zealand, later receiving formal training in acting at the National Theatre School of Canada in Montreal. Since then, she has either performed in or directed for almost every major theatre in Canada. Her repertoire includes classical as well as contemporary theatre, having directed adaptations of such classic texts as Henry James' The Turn of the Screw as well as premieres of new works. She has also written her own play, My Mother’s Feet, which premiered at the Canadian Stage Company in Toronto where she is currently playwright-in-residence and which BeMe Theatre will stage in Munich at the Pasinger Fabrik in November 2008.

BeMe Theatre is a Munich-based professional English-language theatre company. We concentrate on producing theatre which is cutting-edge and cross-cultural, outward- and forward-looking. We use international texts, guest artists, design and developmental processes which cross borders both culturally and artistically. BeMe Theatre endeavours to create a permanent theatre in Munich which debuts important international contemporary work new to our audience and explores provocative ideas through the telling of stories; stories which spotlight humanity, politics, and history- the ingredients, affecting human life right in this moment; the elements, shaping and molding our modern society.

BeMe Theatre was founded in Barcelona in 2005 by Elisa Moolecherry. In 2006, she brought the solo-performance I, Claudia to the stage which was remounted in November 2006 at the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre in China and in 2007 at the Amerika Haus and the TamS Theater in Munich with great success. In 2008 BeMe Theatre will stage the award-winning play Goodnight Desdemona followed by My Mother's Feet by Gina Wilkinson (the director of Goodnight Desdemona) in the fall at the Pasinger Fabrik.

Anybody else thinking of going to see this? My husband can't decide if he want to go or not, and it may be too late to get a babysitter anyway, but I am still hoping to make it on Friday or Saturday night...even if I have to go by myself.

Thanks for the offer Shopgirl. Unfortunately my husband came home from work yesterday and said he'd agreed to a spontaneous beer-garden night with his team for tonight, so if I want to go it'll have to be on Saturday. And that might end up being questionable as the hubby also wants to do a daytrip somewhere tomorrow, so I'd have to be home early enough...

Stunning play with many twists and turns which were effectively conveyed by the excellent cast.

This really is a fine piece of work. Normally I have to be dragged kicking and screaming to a theatre but I'm really glad I went to this one. Elisa is a star! Get yourself down there tonight if you can still get a ticket.
