Hallo everybody
Hopefully this is a good place for this topic..
I will possibly be studying in Potsdam in the fall, and I have some silly questions about how easy or not it is to travel between there and Berlin regularly. I would like to be able to go to Berlin a few times a week while I'm there, and I know its about 12 miles but is that to the center of the city or to the outer edge? Is it a long train ride? Is is costly? Do you think its worth staying in Potsdam as a way to be in Berlin (since I may not get into the Berlin study abroad program..)?
Thank you!

I study in Potsdam and live in Friedrichshain. Feel free to PM if you got some more questions, and I´ll try to help you out.
Friedrichshain is in the eastern part of Berlin, and hence not really practical to live in when I study in Potsdam. It´s always a good hour from I leave my flat until I am at the Uni. But to me that´s not really that bad - I actually enjoy the time in the morning when I have peace to read the newspaper and drink my coffe at the train. Friedrichshain is a very vital and kickin place to live - in sharp contrast to the more small townish atmosphere in Potsdam. The costs are not a problem, because public transportation will be included in your semester ticket.
If you live in the western parts of Berlin somewhere near the East-West S-bahn (S7), you will need about 45 minutes to get to the Uni. Alot of students live in Berlin and study in Potsdam. You can of course always live on campus in Potsdam too. The student accommodation is very cheap and OK. And traveling to Berlin is no problem. During the weekend, the S-bahn go all night long, so going out in Berlin is no problem. But living in Potsdam (or the terrible place where they usually put foreign students - Golm) will not give you that Berlin experience. You will not be a Berliner;)
