Looking for a good, reliable pet shop in Munich. Any recommendations? Looking for a hamster...

Believe it or not, sometimes the Tierheim in Munich also has hamsters, gerbils and guinea pigs available. Might be worth a phone call. smile.gif (link is to their Kleintiere or small animal web page)

Dehner sell Hamsters and other small animals.

We've bought several critters from Dehner. They've been quite friendly (the staff). They have a lot of choice. They are all over Germany. And they don't mind if you to give the animals back for some reason.
We bought a mouse there, and suddenly it had loads of babies! So we took them back to Dehner. Except one...
It had escaped and was living behind a cupboard. Where we couldn't get to him. We put out food, which he took in the night. And then we caught him in one of those box-mouse traps that doesn't harm the mouse. Wibble was finally reunited with his brothers and sisters at Dehner a few weeks later.

Thank you for advise! We'll check the tierheim first and if no luck there - we'll go to Dehner's.
...Ian's story was a bit scary though. We have no choise however. Hamster was part of the contractual agreement in our "moving to Germany" deal with the youngest negotiatiors.

I don't know whether I'd get a hamster from a Tierheim. They only live about 18 months-2 years anyway, so I think I'd definitely want a baby...

I guess they do sell small animals (Also fishes) like chinchilla, hamster, rabbit, etc at 'Baumarkt' too. I saw that once when I went to shop in OBI. Tierheim is an other option.

I've got a friend whose hamster has had babies - I think they are about 3 weeks old now. I'm not sure when they are ready to go to new homes, but she has been trying to get me to take one. Whereabouts are you? She is in pfaffenhausen in allgäu.

We bought a tortoise from dehner (Viktualienmarkt) about 3 years ago. I took it last year to a vet to prepare for hibernation and the vet after doing some tests said the tortoise has a disease that will kill it and is contagious (for tortoises). it could live 2 years or 20 years or more. I asked why wouldn't Dehner have checked their pets before selling them and he said they don't because some of the checks are too expensive and so don't make economic sense...

Don't know if Hamsters can have similar sicknesses but you might want to get it checked before/shortly-after buying it or get a cert from the shop to say it is clear from xyz...

Hi Shallot, We live in Starnberg - not a bad distance to Allgäu.
Good point about the lifespan of the hamsters. Have to make sure the one we get is a baby.

Hi Sisko
She's still got three left. I'll PM you her email address.

Sicko - I am just wondering what you are planning to do with these hamsters. I have read on TT about some strange goings on with these things you know.
