The only files which maybe uploaded as an attachment - either to a forum post or a personal message - are images. That is to say files in the following formats: JPEG, GIF, and PNG.
If you want to send someone a movie, Word document, or audio file etc., ask them for their e-mail and then send it to them directly.

What is the file size limit on image files? I'm trying to upload and it says "too big".

Limit is 100Kb.
Use photoshop or paintshop to save your JPG's with 25% compression. That should do the trick.
By the way, good practice on the web generally is to limit images to 20 to 40kb and no more than 400px in width. This isn't because larger images consume webserver resources. Rather, it's because many web users don't have blisteringly fast T1 internet connections. Forcing them to wait 10 minutes while an image downloads is not only unnecessary, it's impolite.

How exactly are we meant to upload images to a specific post (I normally hotlink). I've tried the attachment bit at the bottom of the new post screen, and all I ever get is some "[attachment=???]" in the post rather than an image. What's the best way to do it?
Thats what it looks like as you edit it (after all you cant have a picture in a textarea form element), as soon as you post it the image is in there ok.

Are PDFs still allowed as attachments?
I'm trying to make a post with a small (16 KB) PDF attachment and I get a 'not allowed' message.
