Working in Ingolstadt and living in Munich

Commuting between the two cities

Nisha
Hello. I am currently on a 3 month business trip, both working and living in Ingolstadt. However, my company would like me to come back for a 2 year assignment. Living in Ingolstadt is all good if one is 65+ years old, married with small children, or a teenager. As I am none of these things, I think I go crazy living in a little town like this. Plus, I have yet to meet any expats or anyone to socialize with at all here. Seems like Munich is the place to be.

Therefore, I am seriously contemplating living in Munich while I am on my assignment. I know the commute would be killer (75 km), but I really don't mind the distance. The only thing that would suck is if the commute during rush hour is nasty. I would expect that living in Munich, I would be going against the flow of traffic so it wouldn't be too bad. Is that a correct assumption, or is it bad in both directions? I would be taking the A9 to work and back. I read that the construction on the A9 is due to end before I would start my assignment, so thats a plus.

I'd really appreciate any opinions, suggestions, comments, etc anyone has about this idea. I would like to decide where to live while I'm still here on my business trip. Thanks for your help!

the construction is on till next year sometime i think. its a bad commute until that ends. train might be an option depending on where you need to get to in ingolstadt.

Try living in Arlington and commuting on the beltway to Rockville, Maryland. Now that sucked!
You can live in the north of the city with access to the Ubahn and Sbahn and commute to work by train and to partying by train. Safer and take less time usually. It is bad in both directions as there are many heading to the airport or Nürenburg.
Look around Garching. Check out DBahn and see where it runs from best!

Edit: It is only an hour from Hbf. Not bad!

hi,

i have some colleagues who tried that, but it got too much for them, they then decided to get a room in ingolstadt for tuesday, wednesday and thursday nights, and just drive up and down on monday morning and friday afternoon...

as far a expats in ingolstadt i know there are quite a lot of spaniards (from SEAT) working at AUDI...

i can put you in touch with one of my colleagues if you like p.m. for details...

Commuting by car would be tough during rush hour, but consider using the train instead. The ICE takes 49mins from Munich Hauptbahnhof to Ingolstadt, and the Regionalbahn just over an hour. You could get a monthly (or yearly) pass, which is tax deductible.

PM greg or showem, Greg does this trip so can tell you his experiences.

I agree though, if you want to drive you should live as far North as you can get, the traffic getting out towards the new stadium is a nightmare. Better to live by the central station and commute, if the Ingolstadt end is near a train station.

Either way, depends on the job.. if you're not finishing work before 7 and aren't in Munich before 8-8.30, you may as well stay in Ingolstadt during the week or you'll be knackered and have no life.

Many thanks to everyone for their replies. That was some very useful information there. I really appreciate the input.

@ eurovol - Back home I live in Fairfax and commute ~8 miles on 66 to work, which as you know can be pretty bad too!

Hi! I'm currently working in Ingolstadt 2 to 3 days a week... It is very small and there are lot of families/elderly. It's not a bad commute by train from Munich. It's actually about and hour each direction (a good time for reading etc.) and the train runs once or twice an hour to and from Munich. Could be a little costly but I've never really crunched the numbers on a car/gas/insurance vs. train (and apparently if you get a Bahn card you get 50% off you tickets? or so I've been told. Although, I just use the Bayern ticket option as my employers pays for it. 15 Euros a day)

I may have to start commuting soon too, and looked at the Bayern ticket (as a short term option until I find the best option), but they appear to only be valid from 9am (till 3am the next day). Has this ever been a problem or do you get another type of Bayern ticket thats valid earlier in the day?

Hi

My husband works in Manching (very close to Ingolstadt) and we live in Neufahrn (about 20 minutes by S Bahn from Munich) - there are lots of us expats here and we have a great time - if you would be interested in having a shufty around you would be welcome to stop with us for a night a two have a look around and get a feel for the place (you may want to be closer to the city centre though) - anyway if you decide to live anyway near us you could always car share with my husband - he gets to work within 30 mins.

Let me know if we can help
All the best

Hello there friendly forum people!

So, I'm moving to Ingolstadt in a couple of months with work. But I'd much rather live in Munich, which isn't very far away!! Ingolstadt is cutesy of course but definitely sleepy and an ultimate example of conservative Bayern (please do correct me if I'm wrong though, that's just a brief summary of my experience of it).

Just how commutable is it to Munich? Surely lots of people do this? Ideally I'd get the train, but driving is a possibility too. The last time I went from Munich to Ingolstadt, I took an RE train from Hauptbahnhof, and it got me there in an hour. I know there are ICE services too, but surely that would be really expensive for a 5 day commute?

Haven't sorted accommodation yet, but it would be dead handy to live north of Munich i.e. in the general direction of Ingolstadt, but still on the S-bahn line. I'd be much happier all round if I could live in Munich, and go to the pub/anything remotely cultural regularly, and then stumble home on the S-bahn at the end of the night, regardless of whether it's a slightly longer journey! But is that possible? How far north does the S-bahn go anyway? And are there night trains to Ingolstadt? I'd probably end up spending all my weekends in Munich anyway, so it makes sense to try and live in a northern suburb instead of in 'retirement-town' Ingolstadt.

Thanks for your help all!
