Studying at University of Konstanz

Various info, advice, and experiences

African_Princess
Hey,

I am a South African born with a German father.I plan to study my PHD in Germany, preferably at Konstanz University because it is near my family's home that being Markdorf. I am busy with research about this all and would like to get views from students of the university.Because English is my native launguage, i would like to do my PHD thesis in English.

Is it cheaper to travel everyday with the ferry to the university or would it better to get a flat in Konstanz?I will be in Germany for about 2 weeks in December, so i would love to meet students from the university.

Thanks,
Shakey
I know that the fery is very cheap and accommodation is quite expensive, more so in the summer.

You could try to find an affordable accommodation just across the Swiss border in Kreuzlingen ...

Living in Switzerland

Rent in Switzerland is generally higher than in Germany. In addition, the exchange rate of Euros to Swiss Franks is unfavorable (100 CHF = ca. 65 EUR). Availability of housing is good.

Those who wish to live in Switzerland need official permission from the appropriate Swiss agency. This residence permit, called 'Ausländerbewilligung’ is issued by the municipal governments of the Canton Thurgau. In order to be eligible, it is usually required that one is a citizen of the European Union, no older than 30, and unmarried. An application for residency documents for the Kreuzlingen is available from the University administration (Ms. Rasmussen, Room V 811, Phone 88-2589). The addresses of offices for other municipalities in Thurgau are available at the Kreuzlingen municipal offices (Hauptstr. 62, CH-8280 Kreuzlingen, Phone 0041/71/6776111).

I am currently a student at UniKon. I have to say that Konstanz is not cheap - but students are always subletting their apartments here. That might be a nice option - as you could be close to the uni and in Konstanz. Here is a Web site you might want to check out, but I think it is only in German.

www.vierwaende.de - look under Konstanz & Zwischenmiete

Hope this works because it's my first post

Hi Princess,
I would try to get a place in Konstanz: it's such great town, with all the amenities at hand. The ferry can be a bit of a nuisance (especially in the summer) and travelling to-and-fro is time-consuming anyway. However, there's the option of taking the express coach from Ravensburg to Konstanz, which stops in Markdorf. The coach gets you across the lake to Konstanz in about 45 minutes.
Have you got in touch with potential supervisors at the UoK yet? That's the first thing I would do!
