hi. i lost my job and am thinking about leaving the country (not 100% sure yet). i am moving into an apartment of a friend with no phone or dsl connection next week. it is only a temporary accommodation, and because i do not think to stay in the country for more than a few months, i do not want any 2-year contract or anything. but i need to access internet with my laptop... hotspot would be my choice? if so, which one? is there any option if i want to access internet from my new apartment? it would be in a suburb, so there is no hotspot nearby... thanks in advance.

Alice DSL offers a contract for a month only and if you dont tell them they will extend for another 4 weeks and so on. So in your case this is the best choice.

uh, that sound quite good. but if i wanted to connect to hot spot, what would be the best providers that offers short term contract?
bluedave
If you want to connect to a hot spot, all you need is a wifi enabled laptop, either internally or via a dongle.

Get a wifi adapter on your laptop, get some wifi scanning software, find either a network that is not secured (lots about), or readup on a few of the basic wifi routers used by many people, and find out their out-of-the-box admin passwords, which loads of people don't change. Job done.

Hi all,

I have never posted here before but this appears to be a good place to ask the question below, I have searched around but none of the other posts quite answers it.

I am required to go over to Germany for a few weeks and am looking to access the internet on my laptop. Currently if travelling around in the UK I use my (unlocked) phone which connects via a cable to my laptop. From what I understand, if I use any of the UK providers in Germany it will be rather expensive, especially for data.

Are there any pay as you go type sims that can easily be purchased that will allow relativity cheap access to the internet whilst over there? Or is there a better alternative that I am not thinking of? If it makes a difference I will be staying around Sennelager... I wonder what I do!?

As you may well have guessed, my German amounts to asking for a drink and I won't have much time to go out shopping so any advice on the easiest way to purchase any suggestions is also most welcome.

Regards,
Ducky

T-Mobile sell a prepaid Xtra Web 'n' Walk SIM for €10 which if you order online includes:

- €10 credit
- €4.95 daily flatrate until 31.08.2008 (then it's €7.95)

I am sure the other operators will have similar offerings.

See:

(There used to be an English page with an overview of tarriffs but seems to have gone)

Vodafone have a similar deal call called Websessions. Prices are similar but the deal is better, as with Vodafone you get 24 hours of access from the minute you start to surf, so begin at 3pm and finish next day at 2:59pm. With T-Mobile a "day" always finishes at midnight, so start surfing at 3pm and you finish at midnight. This assumes (in both cases) you do not exceed the maximum permitted 50Mbytes per session.

Hi,
Thank you both very much. By the looks of it the Vodafone option will be the better one to go for. I have had a search around and I believe I will need a "Vodafone CallNow" sim card, is this correct? One website said that the best place to get one would be on eBay, is this correct? If so that's great as it may mean that I can get it all sorted before I leave.

If I get one of these sim card with credit already on is there anything else I need to do in order to enable WebSessions or can I start using it straight away?

Thanks again for you quick help.

Hi,

I currently have internet throught Vodafone! I cancelled my contract as i am leaving Germany in June. The contract was due to run out in Dec and i didnt want it to run for another 2 years. Does anyone know if it is possible to get a 6 month contract?

Why did you cancel, normally on a rolling contract they allow exceptions to the cancellation policy, such as 'leaving the country'.
Did you even talk to them?
minga
If you switch to Alice, you can get a contract with 4 weeks notice for cancellation.
YorkshireLad6
Is it internet over GPRS (mobile phone service) or on a fixed line?
napster

Surfred offer a GSM-based flatrate service for €29.95/month, minimum 6 months, thereafter cancellation within a month. They are based on the Vodafone network offering speeds up to 7Mbit but there are no roaming options, so you can't use it outside of Germany
SteveV
Is there a coverage map for that site. It would be quite important to check there was vodaphone coverage in the area you were going to stay
YorkshireLad6
Vodafone Coverage. In general, as one of the top providers in Germany, if Vodafone don't have coverage in a location, then no-one has.
SteveV
it may have coverage but to get the full speed you need to be in the correct area. The place I may be going seems ot have some patchy areas where the highest speed is unavailable

is this available in shops or just over the net?
YorkshireLad6
Only over the net. That's how they keep costs low
SteveV
can someone tell me if it alows skyp, voip connections.

I read something in german in a vodafone leaflet that I think said voip, peer-peer where barred or extra or something
SteveV
and what does this bit mean?

Die Ersparnis über 15,00€ wird auf der ersten Rechnungsstellung als Gutschrift ausgewiesen.

They charge you full price, then give you a €15 credit...
