Hi,
We have just moved to Berlin and are in the process of sorting our flat out. We need to go to Ikea one day next week to pick up some sofas and a bed... we were wondering whether anyone has a van that we could use? If you do, please let us know the cost and your availability next week - please PM me if you are interested .
cheers,
Cath

We used:
http://www.robben-wientjes.de/Very good value but next time will take a GPS with me so as to get the van back on time! They were accomodating for my lateness nevertheless.

You can hire a van when you get to IKEA. Just reserve one when you arrive. Or arrange delivery when you're there or save yourselves all the hassle and order everything online.
See the
wiki page for more info.

R&W state on their terms and conditions page that you must be permanently resident in germany to hire from them. Did they ask you guys for proof of residence? I will need to hire a van to go to IKEA soon enough too but I won't be registered in Berlin for some time after that, and I'd be presenting an irish driving licence to them. Could I show them the Grundbuch for my flat to prove 'residence'?

we had to move a whole lot of musical gear from one house to another, and were going to hire a van, but realised it may be a problem without having any german ID - we ended up saving ourselves a lot of time, money + stress by just finding a guy with a van on craigs list -
http://berlin.en.craigslist.org/lbs/ - ended up costing us 15 euro for the whole thing, and we didn't have to lift a finger! this is always an option... let me know if you want his details, i would highly recommend him and can give you his phone number if you need.

The implication of your transporting things from IKEA is that you are furnishing a home. If this home is your residence then you are required to formally register it as your residence within 7 days of moving in...

I don't follow. I have a home in Dublin. I have a property in Berlin but it is not nor will be my home (Hauptsitz) for a while yet I want to fly over for a few days, install a kitchen and furnish it so it's ready for my use later in the year. I am wondering will R&W accept my Grundbuch as being enough to rent from them or will they only rent to folks already registered in Germany. I'll email them closer the time to find out for definite, but I was just wondering if anyone who'd rented from them had been asked for proof of residence as it would be an unusual request from most vehicle hire places. Usually it's just your licence/credit card they want to see/copy.

To that last guy from Dublin, i wouldn't worry to much about showing residency papers etc when hiring a van. like you said, they are mostly interested in a credit card and european drivers permit. Having said this, i didn't actually need to rent a van, but did enquire with my Aussie driving permit and asked if i needed other papers and all they said was 'no', just a credit card. a lot of people on this Toytown seem to think that doing things here can appear very difficult. i've been here about 4 months not and have never had a problem doing anything, and i haven't even registered with the government.

I found this website for Ikea transport - my German is beyond poor so I saved it until I can fathom it out.

Cheers YL. I must have skip-read over that bit. I need a full kitchen including appliances delivered. Hmmmm, break my back carrying it all upt the stairs and rent a van for €50 or pay €90 and let these lads break their backs. Decision made. Is a Fundgrube a central warehouse or what? Whatever it is, items from there are excluded it seems.

I think the Fundgrube refers to clearance items, but I'm not really positive. It's sort of a slang word.

That makes more sense. They do stress that items should be in their IKEA packaging (ie, still flatpacked!) for the quotes (based on IKEA prices) to be valid and if you have a house load of fully assembled returns that cost buttons from the clearance section then I'm sure they'd tell you where to go!

I emailed them. They do carry all your stuff up however many flghts of stairs all as part of the quoted service. They also prefer you to shop at IKEA
Spandau as their base is beside it.
