Where to get an antique Rolex watch repaired

Recommended trustworthy shops

My watch is starting to run a little slow, so I want to take it in to get repaired. However, this watch is incredibly sentimental to me - it has been passed through the family, etc. etc. So, anyone know a place that does Rolexs, and is trustworthy?

Oh, I'm also looking to buy a new day-to-day watch, ideally from the Timex Expedition series. Karstadt and Kaufhof in Marienpltz. were decidedly unhelpful, and a little upscale anyway. Most of the sporting-watches market seems to have been cornered by Polaris, and I haven't seen a single Timex in my wandering about yet.

Thanks!

Haven't been there myself, but Ashley's (Am Kosttor 1, corner of Maximilianstr. 18) is a Rolex dealer. They also do repairs.

Go straight to the town centre and go to Wempe or Huber who are located near the Funf Hofe shopping area, near Marienplatz and the Fraunkirche. There are any number of smaller dealers in mechanical watches who could also help you but the big boys in the centre are the best place to start. The price may be somewhat eye-watering though...

Eyewatering indeed. I stopped by Wempe last night, and they said it'd be a 40 EUR deposit while they shipped to to Köln to have it checked out - average repair prices where about 450 EUR. I'm not really comfortable with the thought of it being shipped to Köln anyway, so I said bollocks to that. I appreciate that they aren't trying to do something that they can't do...but still.

As for the small dealers, I'm looking for anyone who is Rolex certified. If they're not certified, it's a no go, but if they are, then the further from the high street I am, the happier I am.

I second Uhren Huber in Residenzstrasse, they have always done a great job on my boss' Patek Philip (broken spring, battery replacement). Not cheap but worth it for an heirloom.

Honestly 450 euro is a pretty reasonable sum for tinkering with a mechanical watch, not to mention several weeks waiting. A Patek Philippe full service will be about 750 euro if anything needs doing - but they completely disassemble the watch, clean everything, and put it all back together and fully recalibrate it so it really is good as new. I assume it's a proper mechanical movement, not a quartz that you have? If quality of workmanship and absolute attention to detail is all important then stick with the trusted companies.

Largest Rolex repair shop (official for warranty repairs) and largest Rolex reseller after Wempe and Huber etc is Hilscher in Schwabing...

Bought my Rolex from them and had my mothers Rolex servicedthere. No complaints and prices are favourable.

Thanks! I dropped it off with Huber, and they told me they'd give it a once over and call me back with a price estimate. If said esitmate is to high, I'll take it round to Hilscher and try them.

It's defenitly a mechanical movment, and I think all it needs is cleaning - the last one happened at a small jewlers outside Washington, DC somewhere back in 2002. The thing is, I remember that costing me no more than $150. This is why I'm so shocked at the €450 quoted price - for the difference, I can practically buy the damn plane ticket to DC and have it done there!

From memory, my mother's Rolex was just short of a re-build and needed a good cleaning instead - since it was stopping - and I think they charged 320€.
