Is it OK to joke about religion?

Or should some subjects be off limits?

@Binaral...

No relation to BinLaden I hope. The exchange that you are referring to is well documented here on TT for all to see. You just couldn't keep up and bailed out after I exposed all of the weaknesses in your silly little opinions.

...just wondering though, if any of you have tried using the good old English expression "is the Pope catholic?" in German???? - I use it occasionally, with mixed levels of understanding!

Far funnier and far more likely to get a complete blank face is 'is the Pope Punjabi'. I use that version.

I´ll try it next time Pas, thanks for the tip!!!

I've used, "Does the pope shit in the woods?" for at least a decade.

I'm with Sin on that except I normally say" Does the pope shit in the woods & is a bear Catholic?"

your silly little opinions.

to say such a thing shows little intelligence, but to write it shows lack of understanding close to ignorance & complete misunderstanding of what opinions are. Be they "silly" or "little" or indeed just plain crap, that is exacly what an opinion is, an opinion & everyone is different. Amen, praise be the Lord

Sorry, just not funny and indeed just plain crap. That's my opinion.

"Ist der Papst katholisch?" is a good old German expression.

"almost certainly"???

Of course "almost certainly", just like I am almost certain that fairies do not exist. I cannot be sure, but all things considered, I do not believe they exist.

I think if you can joke about sex, you can joke about religion!

Two for the price of one!

I look at this way.

If you are religious - life is about the destination and the journey is just the way there.

If you are an atheist life is about the journey as the destination is not really much to write home about. You will not care however as you won't be able to care about it.

Humor is our way of coping with things and nothing escapes being made fun of.

It depends on the motivation, there are people who make jokes as they have negative views/feelings about the subject of the joke.

As I said to a friend who is atheist, maybe we get what we believe once we die.

I will live in a huge house full of page 3 bunnies and cover girls who will all adore me. I said I would think of my friend when I had the time :-)

HELL yes it's O.K. to joke about religion, especially the ones that MAKE women wear rags on their heads. Uh oh, I but go get head insurance now.

Just thought i'd revive this thread with an article that will no doubt see me being accused of being anti semitic.

Well, given your post is not even remotely germane to the topic of whether it's OK to joke about religion (being neither a joke, nor funny, nor about religion), I guess you've rather left yourself open to that accuation haven't you?

On topic, anybody who believes in creation myths in the age of scientific knowledge we are in now deserves all the mockery they get. It' like being an adult who believes in Santa Claus, except a chucky-style one that tells you to smite the ungodly. I must admit, I rather enjoy watching the like of BadBob take a break from drooling into their cereal to try and argue with scientific facts with quotes from some 10x translated holy book.

I cant think of how a religeous person can make jokes of people being non religeous. But I'm sure someone here can.

Here's a statement I saw on the outdoor message board of a local Lutheran church a few weeks ago: GOD DOESN'T BELIEVE IN ATHEISTS

High-larious! laugh.gif

(This week, the same board says: IT WASN'T THE APPLE. IT WAS THE PAIR.)

Lutherans. What a buncha comedians!

Actually it was only meant as a continuation of the argument that I was having with Mr Funny himself, the Conquistador.
