Toom, Kaufland, Edeka Center, Real, or famila

Which of these shops do you like best?
abog
Just wonder which bigger supermarkets expats prefer in Hamburg? Please share yor your opinion. Thanks
HEM
Not Hamburg but 27km to NorthWest...

We buy basic stuff at Aldi & most other things at Marktkauf (opened up within 5 mins drive / 15 mins walk).
Bipa
Is this a trick question? unsure.gif

No Bipa- its just comparing North to South. Munich expats seem to be very unhappy with their groceries (especially big ones). Wonder if Hamburg expats have also a very big problem with them.

I find have to go to both Toom and Rewe to get all the things I want, since neither has everything. There is always something another store.

I miss Loblaws.

I miss Loblaws too (Fairview Mall at Sheppard and DonMills).
Fairview Mall

What do some stores have that others don't though?

I prefer foraging in the wilderness for nuts and berrys, I find it gives you a better selection and you dont have to fight old ladies for your spot in line.

Never been in any of those. Around here it seems to be mostly Plus, Rewe, Aldi or Lidl. I like Rewe, it seems to have a good selection of most stuff.

When I found TOOM, I felt "at home". I also have a gigantic Edeka, which used to be an InterMarche, which used to be a ... whatever, but TOOM is more comfy, IMO. They actually have alcohol on SALE!! Imagine that?! Something on Sale! and significantly so! *shock* *horror* *faints*

I like Rewe although they don't have one close to me. Edeka is the most similar to what I'm used to back at home (US) but I find it really expensive so I only go there for certain things like Tortillas. I usually hit up all the stores fin my neighborhood at least once in the week - Aldi for a certain kind of bread and some canned goods, Penny for another kind of bread and some cheese I love, the Biomarkt for tofu and soymilk yogurt, Lidl for frozen ostrich meat, and the neighborhood Saturday market for fish and fresh fruit and veg.

Now that I've started a full time job I definitely won't have time to do this kind of shopping, so think I'll do most of it at Edeka - most stuff in one place however expensive.

abog works for the German supermarkets people so carry on doing his market research for him, take a look at his post log.

I find Toom and Rewe to be the better ones with Rewe just getting the nod. I have found most of the Edeka's to be poor (except the one in Eppendorf), especially their fruit and vegetables which only surive a day or 2.
