Frankfurt Hash House Harriers

Frankfurt Hash House Harriers is the local chapter of one of the worlds largest ad-hoc social organisations, dedicated to socialising moderated with a smidgin of exercise. We organise our runs once per week, Sundays at 14:30 during the Winter and switch to Mondays at 19:00 for the Summer. Occasionally we also organise weekend events.

The only rule with the hash is that there are no rules, and each club is different but all offer an especially warm welcome to both locals and expats throughout the world.

The first hash started in 1938 in Kuala Lumpur by a bunch of expats who were staying at the bachelor accommodation of the Royal Selangor Club, which due to its food, was nicknamed "the Hash House" (Nothing to do with the other kind). Many would share a meal and a beer or two together on a Monday evening but the founder one A.S. Gispert suggested a brief run of the "hare-and-hounds" variety. This is where one or two people go out and mark a trail with false directions to delay the fast runners and the group would attempt to find and follow the true trail back to the beer and food. A well planned run has both slow and fast runners arriving back at about the same time (even walkers).

With the above as a general principle, hashing as it became known, has spread with the expat community first to Singapore, then in our case via Baghdad (another story) to Frankfurt over twenty years ago. The Hash has even hit mainstream press from time to time. The club as a whole was written up some time ago in "The Economist" of all places and our own chapter has featured in the FAZ, Frankfurter Rundschau, HR3 as well as recently, RTL and we welcome people of all nationalities and all walks of life. It should be emphasised that we have in our ranks both marathon runners as well as perpetual walkers! Runners of all abilities are welcome.

Details of the Frankfurt Hash may be found on our web-site: http://www.frankfurt-hash.de. There is also a Facebook group devoted to our club. We have various related hashes, the Frankfurt Full-Moon-Hash which runs on the Friday after a full-moon, the Saturday Hash in the Summer (which is just that), the DOM hash for those older persons who return to the roots of hashing by following a run wuith a good dinner and the Vineyard Hash which organises weekend events. Details of all these hashes may be found on our website together with links to a database of international clubs.

Note that this club may be related to the one mentioned under "Sports", but personally I prefer to emphasise the social side. It is after all considered to be uncool on a hash if you run so fast that you cannot converse!
action
and what is the average age of the Frankfurt bunch ?
hughk
It wouldn't mean a lot because the SD is large for the main hash and the pack size ranges normally between 20 and 40. Some of our hashers are past retirement age (but not for drinking), some are in their twenties. The SHITS hash is a typically a younger crowd whilst the DOMs (Dirty Old Men) are about 45 and upwards.
Carm
so, how is this post different than this post? Frankfurt Hash House Harriers
hughk
The other one is, IMHO in the wrong section (Sports) and is mostly a copy and paste of some text I wrote many, many years ago for the FH3 website. As the text is on the website I thought it better to rewrite it emphasising the social side.
Mauddib
Ah a club with a schism. My kind of club.

Tooooo far by miles (or should I say km?)...

Seriously though I am not driving an hour for a hash run. If they were more local to Frankfurt then I would be coming and could no doubt round up a few people...

Or am I confused with the Frankfurt Hahn hashers???
action
is Worrstadt even in Hessen ?

Practically France as far as I am concerned !
kato
It's in Rheinhessen, actually - around the border between Rheinhessen and Palatinate. Meaning across the Rhine, and then a couple (dozen) miles deep into the hills.
Darkknight
You would figure that the "Frankfurt" hash would be in or close to Frankfurt... If it takes an hour drive or can't be easily reached with the RMV network
its not in Frankfurt.. I'm with the others, I was thinking of going, but its just to far out in the stix and not easily accessible. Try somewhere closer next time guys..

Dude, you live in Munich. Frankfurt itself is too far away.

Not when I'll prob. be up there on business anyway...

I agree, but they run with us so if they are kind enough to lay trail, we try and follow...

I may not make it because of the distance. This is a shame 'cos I only run Sundays at the moment (due to being detained in Munich on Mondays) and there is only one more Sunday hash before we switch for the summer.

LOL, but look it is much closer than Hahn, but if they can get away with it, then why not us? The next one is much, much more local.

I agree with all the other fellow Frankfurters. What's the point of having such a run if you the organizer can't even make it???
Are you expecting people to fly to Frankfurt Hahn and then join you guys for the run?

Errr, why post in Frankfurt if based in Munich ?

that is just wild...

he is just posting the info, he is not the hare for the weekly run. Just like different people here in Munich advertise the run location.

It kind of is, seeing as how we live here and are potential members but yet the organiser has bailed on the first meetup. Nice job.

You do know that Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin are very big cities in Germany with very large/important companies and institutions right?
Its only a fair guess that many people travel between those cities for work, or are stuck there for a weekend with nothing to do and would
like to attend such an event. Just because somebody doesn't live in Frankfurt, doesn't mean that can't attend an event there.

Munich people tend to invade other area's sections, don't worry yourself action!

Frankfurt is a small city, but it has a 'catchment' area running from Hoch Taunus in the North, Darmstadt to the south, Mainz to the west and Hanau to the west. We have people hashing on a regular basis from all of these places. The hash survives because some idiot has been conned into being a hare and laying a trail. Hares usually lay trail in an area where they are familiar as it usually needs a little local knowledge. This time, we have someone from Mainz laying trail, normally the runs are closer to FFM and are at lot easier to find by public transport. However, getting out and about with the hash is a great way of exploring new areas.

I live just to the north of Frankfurt but am working during the week on a project in Munich. Normally I post in TT whilst stuck in Munich so that is my 'town' on TT. As some people get very confused by this, I may have to create a second persona for my hash related postings!

On-After

Gasthaus "von Stein" in Herrschenrode.
For a review (in German or English) go to qype.com -->

Directions to the on after:
Gasthaus “von Stein” in Herschenrode. (for a route from the onon click here)
Back to the John Deere sign, turn right towards Modautal. The next village is Ernsthofen. Drive through. Less than 1 km after the village exit sign, take the turn to the left towards Herschenrode. The road is a cul-de-sac ending in the hamlet of Herschenrode, the restaurant is to the right, parking to the left.

Directions

Coming via A5 take the exit 27 ”Darmstadt - Eberstadt” and turn onto B426 in the direction of Mühltal / Höchst / Odenwald.

Scenic route:
Several traffic lights and a long winding road, ignore the traffic light at the left turn towards Nieder-Ramstadt (which you DO NOT take), and take the first turn right towards “Waschenbach/Frankenhausen” (if you are driving through a tunnel, you have gone too far*).
After a sharp turn, you come to a T-junction. Turn right towards “Waschenbach”. Stay on this road, through Waschenbach, up the hill, past a quarry on the left, through Frankenhausen, down the hill towards Ober-Ramstadt/Modau.
At the T-junction in Modau turn right into Odenwaldstraße, towards Modautal / Lindenfels.
Almost at the end of the village turn right into “Neutscher Weg” (there is a shop at the right side of the corner called “Biedenbänder” with a John Deere sign and an arrow with “Kreisjugendheim Ernsthofen” written on it).
Follow this small road for about 1 km until you reach a wooded parking area.
YOU HAVE ARRIVED!

Easy route:
If you go through the tunnel, worse luck, keep going on this road until you come an intersection (four directions) with a traffic light and there take the right turn towards Modautal / Lindenfels.
Stay on this road through Nieder-Modau and into Ober-Modau. Look out for the John Deere sign and continue as above.

Look for the yellow HHH signs.

Public Transport

Very complicated – but if you really, really want to use it:
Main station Darmstadt – take a tram (anyone but no. 1) to Luisenplatz – change to tram no. 9 to Böllenfalltor – at Böllenfalltor switch to bus (line O) to Ernsthofen – exit bus at "Odenwaldstraße / Neutscher Weg” and walk towards the parking lot (from Hbh Darmstadt 1-2 hours, depending on connections). Going back: Ask somebody to give you a lift!

There was some confusion about me posting under my normal, Munich based ID (hughk) so I have created a second one to reflect my weekend life in the Frankfurt area. This one is taken from my hash name and I'll use it for hash related postings or frankfurt related stuff (until I finish my Munich project).

Note I'm not always stuff here when the details are delayed, but it will usually be posted on the hash web site: http://www.frankfurt-hash.de together with details of our offspring hashes such as the Full Moon Hash, and the Saturday Hash in the Summer (which runs late Saturday afternoons) as well as others.
