Getting a "Hort" placement in Munich

Tips on after-school child care

My girlfriend’s six year old son is moving from kindergarten where he gets to spend the whole day, to Grundschule which apparently only lasts 4 hours. So she would like to get a Hort placement for him. The one in her catchment area is full, and it appears that there is a severe under supply in this area.

So anybody know of a Hort ideally not too far from the centre as she lives on Gabelsbergerstr which has free places, or was easy to get your child into. English speaking is no problem, in fact good, as he’s pretty well bilingual.

Searching for hort produces no results, and while there’s lots of threads on schools, none of it seemed really helpful.

I was able to get my daughter into one by pointing out that I was a single mother (single fathers received the same treatment). Doesn't the Rathaus have a central listing? Is this the school at Türkenstrasse? I thought that they had expanded by 100% after the construction finished.
Good luck!

You have to fill out a form to appeal the hort placement denial. Our son was also denied and we are looking at that as well now and also alternatives.

Mam, If your girlfreind is a single mother and working she jumps right up the queue... Get her to appeal.

Unfortunately I don't think the replies that "single mothers get priority" are actually accurate. At least, for daycare and kindergarten spots, single parents and families where both parents work are the same level of priority. And anyone who wants a spot in a Hort is going to be one or the other of those classifications. Also, I think for September Hort spots your girlfriend probably already missed the sign-up cut-off, as I think its the same as for Kindergarten, at least the Kiga form I filled out also included information for Horts. That said, good luck, and here's a link to information on public Horts in Munich.

Also, FYI some schools offer something called "nachmittagsbetreuung" -- this means the kids get to stay longer but they don't get help with their homework like they do at the Hort. Switching to a school that offers this option is viewed as a valid reason for a Gastschuleantrag to be accepted from what I've been told--I don't know how competitive it is to get into these spots.

Edit--here's another page on the munich website with more links to Elterniniative, Nachmittagsbetreuung etc.- all the options for Grades 1-4.
another edit--sorry, probably if your gf just got a rejection from the Hort where she signed up then she did so by the deadline...but maybe Nachmittagsbetreuung is still an option...
