hi,

my girlfriends parents are visiting for the weekend and i'm at a bit of a loss for dinner destinations for the 3 nights... they like to eat out, so despite my offers to cook something nice, we are planning to be out each night

they have been in munich earlier on this year and were not quite taken with the bier keller atmosphere, we also went to tchevnetskis (sp?) that time which they were not too dissatisfied with...

so they arrive tonight and we are off down the big easy for the best steak in munich... then friday & saturday night, um i dunno... all of the places i can think of are a bit too bar-ish or bavarian...

can anyone recommend some nice sedate restuarants with international menus...

we are also going to drive to salzburg on saturday, so we might stop somewhere on the way back for dinner... anybody know anywhere nice out that direction?

any tips greatly appreciated...

What is wrong with Bavarian?
Take them to the Insel Mühle and there they can get pretentious Frenchiefied food.

If they like Indian I can recommend Ganga, it was delicious.

If htey don't like the Bierkeller atmos but don't mind good bavarian food, I can recommend the "Wirtshaus in der Au" just past the Museum Lichtspiele (by Zeppelinstrasse, next to the Isar). They have excellent food.

Otherwise if you really want to treat them, it's good weather and budget is unimportant, the restaurant at the top of the Olympic tower is excellent. It rotates, something different with great views.

combine food, a touri gag, and great view, i would recommend the restaurant in the olympia t.v. tower. it's a rotating restaurant and you get a kick-ass view of munich and on clear nights, the alps (or even a soccer match).
pricey? i wouldn't say so. a meal plus wine will set two of you back €75 (my angus filet was €22), which is not something we'd do every day, but on occasion, why not. they have menus in english.
otherwise, it's one of those things "been there, done that". the menu is small, maybe 2 or 3 starters, no pure salad dishes (not on the menu at least), and about 5 main meat, 2 fish, and 2 vegetarian dishes. their wine menu is extensive. (as a footnote, i accompanied my bf on a business dinner there.). aside from the view, you can impress people elsewhere.

my favorite place, when i don't know what i want and i want a lot and price-worthy is CADU. avoid the tex-mex dishes though. disappointing. service is always great. table are small for eating.

CADU = Cafe An Der Uni. U3/U6 University stop. Right there on Leos str.

for Bavarian, I still like Haxnbauer for visitors. A little pricey, but English menus and speaking waiters available, and very good food.

also a little spendy, but still one of, if not my top, favorite restaurant is La Bouille. French and to die for.
Elfenstar
oh, you should definitely do a weisswurst breakfast. best place, the weißbrauhas in TAl str. sit upstairs.

can't find much more than the address and tel number:

Frauenstraße 10
80469 München

have had a few really good meals there, worth a look and not mad expensive.

the brasserie is next to the Victorian House, run by an english guy with excellent international food...you could take them there if they're whining biggrin.gif

okay guys'n'gals, just some feedback and a tale of woe,

they loved the big easy on thursday night and surprisingly they asked to go to the augustiner on landsbergerstr on saturday... obviously they didn't dislike bavarian fodder as much as they let on...

we went to the brasserie am viktualien markt on friday night, and although we thoroughly enjoyed it, (the food there tastes absolutely excellent), there were some grumblings about the portion sizes...

...this wasn't helped by the fact that i wan't really paying attention during ordering process and the 'mother-in-law' ordered 'kalbskopf', she asked me what type of meat 'kalb' was, i said viel... enough said...

...but it turned out that kalbskopf is actually a what it says on the tin... ohmy.gif ... calf's head, boiled and boned, but into slices and deep fired in bread crumbs... as her plate arrived and i slowly began to realise my error (in horror, this is a very sqeamish and highly strung woman) i took the executive decision not to tell her (for fear of an international incident) and sucessfully convinced her that it was just a 'typical german cut of meat, very fatty and not like what you would get at home...'

i'll have to live with this secret for the rest of my life (or at least hers)

Hi,

I NEED SOME HELP!

I am looking for a good, recommended restaurant, in Munich for my 30th and the mother-in-laws 65th Birthday.

As we are not into spicy food, Indian and Mexian restaurants are out.

I've only been to Munich a few times but I fancy something a bit more classy than McDonalds or Pizza Hut.

I really appreciate all your help.

Thank you

Sarah

Easy Peasy, go up the Olympic Tower. Time it so you arrive shortly before sunset, and hope for suitable weather. The food is great (costs a bit, but then it's a special occasion), the restaurant revolves so there's plenty to see, and if you get a good sunset it's simply stunning.

Have you looked through the Restaurant section here
Carm
I was at Andeser am Dom on hte weekend and it was really good Bavarian food. Not too pricey either.
Kat
@Jooly - do you need reservations for the Olymic Tower restaurant? And does it have a name?

I think you'd need to reserve.

When I went there was a visiting chef, but I recommend just ordering á la carte... it doesn't take so long, is excellent and worked out cheaper too. (I went with my grannies and the 3 course menu was served to all clients at the same time, so although we were the first there to see the sunset, it took 4 hours to get through 3 courses... excruciating with 2 tired 80+ year olds in tow).

Reckon on €75 per head for 3 courses with wine, coffee and aperitif. And take a camera!

Hmmm if Sarah's birthday is on 8 Jan (which I just guessed from her handle) then they're going to have to start early to catch the sunset wink.gif
Sarah, which part of Munich are you looking in?
Topsy
@ jeeves - I was thinking exactly the same thing smile.gif
course it could be the 1st of August and she's planning ahead...

Thanks Everybody

Jooly, what is the food like at the Olympic Tower and as Kat said, do you need a reservation?

I'm not sure about the sunset, as our birthdays are next week.
More of a snowset!!! If the weather is anything like it is here in Ingolstadt.

thanks again
Jeeves
I only ate once at the Olympic Tower and the food was good. However it was our company Christmas bash and so it was all an alcoholic haze, so maybe my judgement was impaired...
If you're coming from Ingolstadt by car then of course the Olympic Tower is easy access for you.
JoolyBooly
yes, and the tower is also lovely by night as the city is lit up. The food is international, things like lovely beef wellington with vegetables, I had superb fish...
Otherwise, is you speak German, the Welser Küche is fun. This is the medieval banquet in the cellar under Odeonsplatz. Better with a table of 10, though.

Or the Witzigmann palazzo thingy at the Messe, this has been extended.

otherwise Schumann's / Schubeck's, whatever it's called, the one next door to the Hofbräuhaus. You need to reserve all of these well ahead.

If not look under "search" for restaurants, there was a thread about this before where someone was asking for tips for a company dinner.

Oh, speaking of which my friend recommends the french restaurant whose name... I have totally forgotten. Shit. She's back tomorrow so PM "Tinna" and she'll give you the name.

Bogenhauser Hof (see www.bogenhauser-hof.de for menu & getranke)
A bit pricey but wonderful food. Especially the tagliatelli with truffel... mmm
Kat
A special, delicious meal costing 1 arm and 1 leg can also be had at Käfer upstairs. It's been several years since I was there, but I doubt they would ever risk their excellent reputation.
JoolyBooly
ooh, that always looks lovely from outside too..
