Hi Everyone,

At the last meetup we decided on Chocolat by Joanne Harris:

QUOTE
From Publishers Weekly
The battle lines between church and chocolate are drawn by this British (and part French) author in her appealing debut about a bewitching confectioner who settles in a sleepy French village and arouses the appetites of the pleasure-starved parishioners. Young widow Vianne Roche's mouthwatering bonbons, steaming mugs of liqueur-laced cocoa and flaky cream-filled patisserie don't earn her a warm welcome from the stern prelate of Lansquenet-sous-Tannes. In Francis Reynaud's zeal to enforce strict Lenten vows of self-denial, he regards his sybaritic neighbor with suspicion and disdain. Undaunted, Vianne garners support from the town's eccentrics, chiefly Armande Voizin, the oldest living resident, a self-professed sorceress who senses in Vianne a kindred spirit. A fun-loving band of river gypsies arrives, and a colorful pageant unfurls. The novel's diary form?counting down the days of Lent until Easter?is suspenseful, and Harris takes her time unreeling the skein of evil that will prove to be Reynaud's undoing. As a witch's daughter who inherited her mother's profound distrust of the clergy, Vianne never quite comes to life, but her child, Anouk, is an adorable sprite, a spunky six-year-old already wise to the ways of an often inhospitable world. Gourmand Harris's tale of sin and guilt embodies a fond familiarity with things French that will doubtless prove irresistible to many readers. Rights sold in the U.K., Germany, Canada, Sweden, Holland, Spain, Italy, Finland, Denmark, Brazil, Israel, Norway, Greece, the Czech Republic, Poland.

So now we just need a date. I guess the end of April would be better so how about Monday 28th? However I can personally do any night apart from Tuesday or Thursday.

As always newcomers are very welcome.

will be on holiday from 24th-5th of May but will read it anyway...what did ye all think of the inheritance of loss...i must say it started slow but i was pretty won over by the end, however buddha of surburbia it ain't... wink.gif
Purple Muffin
Well if others are ok with it we could have it on 21st or 22nd... I am half way through already so will be finished by then.

I must admit I was not as impressed with the inheritance of loss as I thought I was going to be. It jumped a bit too much for me and I found that hard to follow. I am very much looking forward to discussing Chocolat though biggrin.gif

21st or 22nd sounds good to me.

As for the inheritance of loss, for me it also started slow, and I was patiently reading on, waiting for it to become as captivating as promised by the critics, but it never really did. It was an interesting enough read about a completely different world, but it's not something I would reread or even recommend to others, unless they were going to this part of India.

HI there...sorry Purple Muffin - I have been off-line for a few days. I already have something planned on Monday April 21 and I am unsure if I will be flying to the US the last week of April (April 22-29). If I dont go to the US then I can do any night the week of the 21st except for the Monday.
Purple Muffin
Ok I have just realised that only day I could make that week would be the 21st or the 24th which is the Friday.

Lets see what dates others can make before deciding for definite. If you are going to the States PMR then I guess it makes no difference when we have it that week to you biggrin.gif
PMR2006
Agreed. Since it is up in the air as to where I will be that week- you guys should set a date and if I do turn out to be here I will try and make it.
Purple Muffin
OK anymore news anyone? I have about 30 pages to finish and am finding it quite good.

What about a date? Is 21st going to work out or do some need more time?
PMR2006
Just wanted to let everyone know that I will be in the US next week as expected. I'll check-in for the next title when I return.
Rilana
I have read the book and can make any day next week! would prefer if it wasn't a Monday though, I always feel like running straight home and hiding on Mondays laugh.gif
Purple Muffin
I know that feeling tongue.gif But next week Monday is the only day I can make - unless we go for Friday. It is a similar story for week starting 28th April too.
Rilana
ok...maybe I can make an exception and be sociable on Monday just for you!
chucha
Bloody amazon still hasn't delivered my book (that I ordered on the 3d of April). Looks like this time you'll have to tell me what happens after the first few pages wink.gif Could we do it on Friday, so that I have a better chance to finish?
Purple Muffin
Ok well since Rilana and I are the only definites for Monday so far I am happy to postpone giving you more time to read it biggrin.gif

I won't be online much as of about now until Monday morning so we can check for a date again then. Friday would be fine with me...
Purple Muffin
Oh if we do the Friday we could meet for dinner or something and chat about the book and go for a drink afterwards for example?
Rilana
perfect! where shall we go?
Purple Muffin
I'll have a think for good places which are good to chat and no loud music. Manolya could be a good one in Bornheim.
chucha
I got the book on Friday and I'm already half way through, so I'll definitely be ready for Friday. Great book!
Purple Muffin
OK great Friday it is. I will book a table at Manolya.

8pm ok?
chucha
8pm is fine. Thanks for booking it.
PMR2006
Manolya. Yummy! Sorry to miss this one. If possible, can you post the next book to be read next Saturday or Sunday. I am hoping to buy the book in the US before I leave. smile.gif
Purple Muffin
Yes sure no problem I'll post it. Does anybody have any suggestions already?

I quite fancy the look of The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon although sadly my Spanish is not good enough to read the original...
Rilana
cool, I've read that already and it's one of my favourite books. Would definitely be a good choice!
Purple Muffin
Hiya all just to let you know I booked the table for 8:30pm although just noticed we agreed on 8. What time will you be getting there? See you later anyway biggrin.gif
chucha
hmm, 8:30 is also ok, but I might get really hungry by then wink.gif So, I'd prefer 8. But if it's too early for you, 8:30 is fine too.
Purple Muffin
I don't think it will matter if we turn up early. I will aim to be there for 8 then shouldn't be a big problem...
