American looking for skiing advice from Munich

In the Austrian Alps on Saturday 26.Apr.2008

Ladies and gentlemen,
This is my first post and I was hoping that some of you could offer some advice.

I am an American who makes frequent trips to Munich for business and I would like to try and ski one day in the Austrian Alps (I wish I could ski longer but my travel doesn’t permit it). I plan to be in Munich for business during the week of April 21st and flying back to Boston on Sunday April 27th (my flight departs at 1500 CET). I have a work colleague who is flying into Munich airport on Friday evening and then we plan to rent a car (FYI – I drive an Audi A6 in Boston so I prefer to drive an Audi while in Europe) and drive to Austria and stay overnight in a hotel – and then ski a full day on Saturday the 26th. We might drive back to Munich Saturday night or Sunday morning – that hasn’t been decided yet.

Given how late this is in the ski season, I have been told that the Glacier of Stubai should be the best choice. I believe the travel time via car will be about 2,5 hours.

Can anyone here provide any additional advice or suggestions based on the information above?

Also, the last time I was in Germany/France on business I was able to coordinate a very similar “side trip” to the French alps. Here is my YouTube footage from Val d'Isère (I’m the one with the black helmut).

It's fascinating to know your flight schedules and which brand of car you like to drive, but what's your actual question? If you want to know where you can still ski at the end of April, only a fortune-teller can help you. However, the obvious rule is "the higher you are, the more snow there'll be". You may be interested to know that the snow came very late this year and another half or full metre is expected over the next few days.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't get the bit about flight times and car preferences. Why do we care what kind of car you're driving? Why do we care about videos from your last skiing holiday? What does that have to do with anything? The whole post is very confusing, so like STB I have no idea what the OP is actually asking for.

All I can recommend is to do a TT search on skiing and see if anything there is helpful.
DandL
You should get in touch with the Munich International ski club. They usually do weekend outings that are reasonable and it is a great group of people.

You can search on TT for the contact information.

I too am a bit confused by this post, but I have been teaching English at Audi for six months and guess that they have an A6 (audi language levels) ski course. I am not sure even the engineers I work with can guarantee you snow, but over 1500 meters CET we still have snow

Considering the travel distance and snow conditions, Stubaier Gletscher or Hintertuxer Gletscher would be the best choice. More information.

Remember to buy a Vignette sticker (toll for the Inntal-Autobahn) at a gas station near the German-Austrian border, and beware of possible snow and ice on the last bit of road to the glacier. You would need snow chains then. Or better take a taxi. biggrin.gif

Snow chains? Yup - better pack them along with the infrared blizzard goggles and arctic survival tents. Up in the mountains the weather can change fast in late April.

For a 1 day ski trip like this you need to minimise travel times so I agree that Audi is the only way to go. You could risk a BMW or maybe a Mercedes at a pinch, but nothing less than
a German engineered car can be relied on to get you from Munich to Austria and back in a single day. I think an Audi R8 with ski rack is the unit for this task.

I suggest orange to maximise car visibilty in case of sudden snowstorms etc

RainyDays
LOL, well, I don't know about the arctic survival tent, but I read there is a Schneekettenpflicht, and there can definitely be fresh snow in April (have been there at that time of the year).
Johnny English
p.s. Don't forget the black helmut.

I assume he is to carry your bags and pre-warm the ski boots etc??
RainyDays
Nope, I always carry my skis myself. tongue.gif

Aha! Rainydays has apparently actually been to Austria in April herself, so will leave you in the hands of our resident expert for more advice.

Teddy,

I think we're gonna need more information. Please provide a full itinerary of your trip including flight numbers and accommodation details so we can plan your skiing properly.

More videos as well please.

Thanks.

Teddy,

I think to be able to tell you where to go we also need to know your skiing abilities (I cannot access utube) and also what colour ski clothes you have, also what label, we wouldn't want to send you to a low class ski area if you only wear Bogner ski gear.

Good News! By coincidence I will be in Boston on business on the 14th June. I am seeing Bobby Carter for a meeting the day before (being from Boston yourself I guess you probably know him).

As I drive a Volvo here in Europe I thought it would be better to rent a Volvo in the USA so that I know how the indicators work and which pedal is the brake etc, as I expect your whacky
American cars have everything back to front. Would be no good trying to indicate left and braking, but instead turning the wipers on and running down one of the many homeless ha ha ha!

I am thinking about having a day waterskiing. I am very good at waterskiing. In fact I am so good I have a special red waterskiers helmet that I shall bring with me. Just wondering what type of
water would be best in June, or will it all have dried up by then?

p.s. Silly me - nearly forgot the important stuff. My flight takes off at 19:00 on the 15th and I have ordered the vegetarian option 'cos you never know these days. I am hoping for an aisle
seat but the lady on the phone said I can only book that 2 days before. Hopefully will have room in the overhead locker for my special red helmet.
Renia
Do you have any videos of yourself waterskiing JE? That would provide a laugh help.

Ah...be nice to the Boston boy. Although, at first glance, I'm guessing he grew up in R.I. or possibly north shore (Revere).
icculus
I'd offer to help out, but I'm guessing TeddyBallGame is a Red Sox fan, and since I'm a sour Yankee's fan I guess I have to withold my assistance!

(but if I were to help I would say that we are getting a lot of late season snow and you should look at Hintertux or checkout conditions at other areas on http://www.bergfex.com/ ;-)

lol @ JE that is comedy gold!!! laugh.gif

You can consider skiing near on the Shemshak resort at 3,600 meters (11,800 ft) , with a vast ski area and hotel, along with Dizin, Shemshak is preferred by experienced skiiers. Its located about 37 miles from Tehran.

Considering depreciated dollar, prices at around $2.00 per Person/Day would be wonderful and also allow you to rent the Audi A6 version.

Arlberg and the St Anton region have a ton of snow right now. I think most of the resorts in that area close on the 20th, however. Bummer. Still might be worth checking out. Also take a look at Sölden. Stubai is a decent place but pretty boring in my opinion. I think I've just been there way too much in the early and late season. Most of the glacier skiing in Austria is pretty boring. I guess it depends on what type of skier you are, though. If you hate to ski on-piste and loathe Euro-style carving, this place is a must: Krippenstein. Well, crap. Looks like this weekend is the last open weekend there. Keep that link for future reference. Best skiing in Austria if you like yourself lift-served backcountry. Just make sure to bring some skis that are 100cm wide or greater underfoot!

Why do the areas that still have such good conditions close so early? Makes no sense to me as some of the best skiing and most stable snow can be found in the spring. These would be some great places to hit up with Alpine Touring gear. I just ordered mine yesterday biggrin.gif

If non of the above are suitable you can come round to ours, we had a bit of snow last week and the pile of earth ive been meaning to spread on the grass for the last year still has a brush of snow on it , I own a Polo ( its a VW)

I was in Hintertux (a glacier resort at the end of Zillertal) last Sunday and it was generally excellent, especially high up although a bit slushy by midday lower down. It's only just under 2 hours from Munich by car.
Mapleleafdude
Shouldn't you be drunk by noon if your skiing in the Alps? or why were you skiing before noon? blink.gif
