A really good one (but relatively pricey) is altes Zollhaus in Kreuzberg. http://www.altes-zollhaus-berlin.de

I give my personal recommendation to...

Alter Krug

MO-SO 10:00-?Adresse:
Königin-Luise-Straße 52
14195 Berlin

..Get yourselves down the Tiergarten Quelle guys and pals (under Sbahn Tiergarten)...Humungous portions, small prices and German and Altberliner dishes..' just like Grandma used to make'...

failing that, a tiny little place called Spätzle express' serving south german specialities - Görlitzer Bahnhof - Kreuzberg..

when Ma visits she always wants to go to Marjellchen. Prussian specialties in an old stylie atmosphere. I find the proprietress to be a little bossy but the food is good.

For a unique Berlin experience, check out the restaraunt "Henne" (http://www.henne-berlin.de) in Kreuzberg. This is a Kreuzberg institution - wonderful atmosphere - no problem choosing what you want as all you get is a half of rost chicken, with optional potato salad. Sounds a bit strange, but it is a great place, and a classic Berlin place. Be warned it is very popular, so you best to make a reservation. If it is full, you can pop across the canal to the "Kleine Markthalle", which mimics the concept - food still good, but the atmosphere not as good (although they have a good outside area for eating in the summer).

If you fancy the Eisbein option, then you can try out Zur Letzen Instanz (http://www.zurletzteninstanz.de) in Mitte. Lots of tourists, but a good atmosphere, and the food is good.

All the best and happy eating,

Colin

Schwarzwaldstuben at Tucholsky Str. 48 (Mitte) is fantastic... Serves reasonably-priced Bavarian munch, flammkuchen and all sorts of snacky things... Gets incredibly crowded but worth the effort of bagging a table! They also serve Rothaus...

Austria on Marheinekeplatz in Xberg (Bergmannkiez).

Thueringer Stuben on Stargader Strasse p-berg.

Alt Berliner on Arkonaplatz - mitte.

Schusterjunge on Danziger Strasse near Eberswalde U-Bahn.

Max u. Moritz on Oranienstrasse.

Chez Gino on Adalbertstrasse in Xberg.

Tiergarten Quelle food really isn't that good but the atmosphere is great.

Hi folks,

Just thought i would update,

I went to Max und Moritz on Oranienstrasse (U bahn Moritzplatz) Amazing food, good prices, service was questionable but it was quite busy so maybe i'll let them off. book in advance - went on a friday and there was a constant stream of people. The chicken and the steak are particulary good!

also went to Brauhaus Lemke (nr Hackescher markt) also really good, great food, excellent service, fabulous beer, lots of different dishes on the menu. Went on a sunday and it was fairly quiet although i can see it being busy on a friday or saturday night.

thank you all for your suggestions they were really very useful!

Brauhaus Lemke at Schloss Charlottenburg is absolutely fantastic - and they brew their own beer. Best beer I've drunk in Berlin rolleyes.gif

I rather like Brauhaus Mitte (in the Berlin Carré across the street from S+DB Alexanderplatz, near the TV tower), although some find it too touristy. They brew 3 or 4 of their own beers, have plenty of room, and do a good job with German food from various regions.

Weihenstephaner on Hackescher Markt is also nice, when you can sit outside in the summer.

Personally, I love Schweinshaxe when it's properly roasted and crispy, but I consider boiling it into Eisbein a crying shame.

It must have gone downhill then Tiergarten Q, the times I went the food was ok - not the healiest, but if you wanted to eat healthily, you go to a salad bar or something

Have you tried Spätzle Express, Görlitzer Bahnhof? South German cuisine, very cheap, and yummy..

Weihenstephan is very nice, but it is also very price.

A good Belrinner kneipe for both food and drink at reasonable prices is Treffpunkt Berlin Alt-Berliner Kneipe on Mittelstr. 55, 10117 Berlin, just off Friedrich Str

Käsespätzle is like macaroni and cheese, and it's not even bavarian! Sorry to have to post it, but it's not the first time I've come across this misconception. Sure you can get a plate of Spätzle in Bavaria, you can even get it in Berlin. But Spätzle is foremost swabian / alemannic. Next time you're in Bavaria, try the Schweinshaxe.
luvlein
You should make Spätzle at home, from scratch, and without the help of machines. You may not believe me, but taste and texture will be totally different.
TobyG.
As Prenzlauer Berg nowadays is more swabian than Stuttgart it is likely that you can also get very good Spätzle there...
