O'Reilly's pub quiz is back in Munich!

Update: not any more. The pub has closed.

Malcolm Spudbury
I haven't seen Mr. McVitie at the quiz for a while. I wonder if he will be gracing us with his presence this evening?
koala
Yes, our Jakey has been a little on the quiet side recently...
I intend being relatively early.
Jake McVitie
I won't be there this week. Good luck though!
Malcolm Spudbury
Another dismal performance last night. Our score was so bad that we thought the quizmaster had miscounted the points...
Jake McVitie
There were 13 teams. Team 9 (a.k.a. Toytown Two) came joint 9th with 63 points whilst Team 10 (a.k.a. Toytown One) came 8th with 67 points. The winner was Team 8 with 92 points. Does anyone know who Team 8 is also known as. There were rumours that this was the ex-quizmaster from Hard-Days-Night Beetles Bar in Schwabing - the one who used to win every week because he set the questions for and played in his own quiz.

Incidently, the O'Reilly's quizmaster, Phil, is returning to England for good this week. So that was his last ever quiz. Which is a shame, because I thought he did a good job - although I do suspect he was rigging the results towards the end. Why else would we not win?

Who's taking over, that's what I want to know. Hopefully not Baldy from Hard-Day's-Night. We'd never win again.
Malcolm Spudbury
The winning team was the one sitting on the high round table just to the right as you walk in the pub. The Twat In The Hat, as AM fondly calls him, was not on that team.
Malcolm Spudbury
Who's going tonight?
Do we stick around if The Twat In The Hat is doing the questions?
koala
Well if we are going out to play tonight, I shall be late. I suppose we ought to go and see who is responsible for the quiz and if it is your mad hatter we can always escape at the last minute...
hoddysded
I won't be able to make it tonight guys. I'll be stuffing turkey in my face since it's Thanksgiving for us Yanks today. I'm going to kick myself if you guys win the grand prize tonight though! What's it up to by now? Close to €400. Have fun and don't let the Twat in the Hat run you off.
AquaticMeringue
There was no pub quiz last night - so I was forced to consume a few beers just for the sake of it.

On the plus side, however, the quiz will be starting again next week - and the Twat in the Hat will not be the Quiz Master.
Noddy
Is anyone going along this week?
AquaticMeringue
Nope, nobody in the world is going this week.
Hazza
I'll be there. Just got back from the US. I want to gloat to all the Americans in Toytown: I was there for Thanksgiving. Stayed with a friend and had a traditional Thanksgiving meal, with Turkey, stuffing and a ham as big as Jake's head!! Felt sick from eating too much.
hoddysded
You bastard Hazza! I'll be there to hear all about it.
Malcolm Spudbury
I'll be there too, if I don't get back from Swede-land too late.

(by the way, I haven't seen the sun for 4 days).
AquaticMeringue
I'm not going to be there this week.
Noddy

nobody in the world is going this week

Is that...
a) Nobody in the exlusion of everybody sense;
cool.gif Nobody as in you thinking you are a nobody and you are not going sense;
d) Nobody as in someone called nobody, who is not going, sense;
e) what happened to 'c'?
c) Ahh, there it is.
f) Nobody in some other sense which I haven't thought of?

If you mean 'a', it should be a fairly easy win. Does that mean you will be going after all?
jkamp
I hope that you welcome new faces because I plan to come tomorrow night. I am bringing my husband, a British friend he works with, and his girlfriend. (The girlfriend of my husband's friend, not my husband's girlfriend. She is not allowed to drink on Thursdays. biggrin.gif )

Just the thought of clearly understanding people, even when they speak quickly, is so appealling to me. As for trivia... I used to go to a bar called P.J. Dawson's at home on Thursdays for trivia night. This means absolutely nothing about my propensity for being correct - - but I thought I would throw it in there for effect.
hoddysded
jkamp, you are welcome to join the Toytown Table. We usually sit in the farthest left hand corner when you come down the stairs. People usually start turning up around 7-7:30.
hoddysded
Well, I showed up for the quiz a little before 7:00 and the place was shut down, lock stock and barrel. Anybody know if they have gone out of business or what?
AquaticMeringue
They probably heard I wasn't going this week.
Jake McVitie
Wouldn't surprise me if that place was shut down for good - it was always deserted. The pub quiz was just about the only thing which kept it alive. And I don't suppose that is really enough to pay the rent on Munich's most expensive street.

Hold on, I'll just message Sarah and see what the story is.
hoddysded
Whatever the story, there was one IRATE Irish man beating on the door as we walked away. He was truly lost in the world. We laughed and said it was maybe a case of Candid Camera at work. Went over to Ned Kelley's and had a nice fish and chips supper and witnessed a drunken sot fall off his chair twice before he fell onto me and then simpered out the door.

Now what? Any other pubs have a quiz night?
AquaticMeringue
Yes, Gunther Murphy's, but apparently it's rubbish - multiple choice. Besides which, if we start going it'll only be a matter of months before Murphy's shuts down as well...
Malcolm Spudbury
Silke/Ruby posted this to the forum that shall not be mentioned (in a thread that has nothing to do with the pub quiz):

QUOTE
O´Riellys is closed down for a short period due to the reparation of a lavatory problem that you probably already noticed.

And fakeys trying to sms Sarah...fat chance...

Seems she still can't spell the name of her employer...
jkamp
Whew! I thought it was something I said. Though I did find it amusing that the temporary closing of O'Reilly's perfectly coincided with my announcing my arrival. The beauty of irony. We wound up at Ned Kelly's as well and drank ourselves stupid. It was really terrible (but I promise that none of us fell off of our barstools). I was told that there is a pub called Shennanigan's (spelling could be VERY wrong) that has different events every night of the week. They have trivia night for sure. They also have karaoke (for those of you who missed your chance to appear on Star Search and are too old for American Idol or the original British version). Disclaimer: I have no idea what the crowd is like or, more importantly, where it is located. Oh yeah, and to top off the night, I got to ride in the "backseat" of a new Mini. Now let me tell you, I am short... but anything larger than a gerbil has no place in the back of a Mini...
Jake McVitie
Well, she who shall not be named from the forum which shall not be named was right. No reponse from Sarah. Can't think why though. Her number must have changed since she gave it me, or something.
Malcolm Spudbury

The one between Münchner Freiheit and Dietlindenstrasse? I thought it closed down about a year & a half ago...

Keydeck
Not wanting to cast any asparagus or anything, but I've heard tell that the little closure of O'Reillys may have had more to do with the distribution of certain illegal substances on the premises rather than any lavatorial issues.
bee_sting
Excellent gossip! Maybe that explains how reilly's stayed in business with only a few "regulars" and also the strange behavior of THE ONE WHO SHOULD NOT BE NAMED. She is there an aweful lot...and people on the stuff act strangely and are not able to follow a logical line of thought.

Hmm. Everything is getting clearer...
hoddysded
Line of logic or an order of beer...that wasn't their strong suit in any event. I'm not buying "the toilet is on the fritz" either. Pure Columbian Cartel is what I say. Our little mouth piece from you know where, only has 12 hours to live, according to my sources.
hoddysded
Of course that's a joke, before the nut calls the cops or something.
koala
Malcolm is right, Shannanigans was on Ungererstrasse and closed down ages ago.
RuggedyMan
There is an Irish place in Rotkreuzplatz that advertisers in Munich Found and has a table quiz on Monday nights. Cannot vouch anything further about the place though as I have never been there. Something to do with old boots in the name or summat.
bee_sting
Ryan's Muddy Boot...never been there. Why don't you go tonight and check it out for us?
Keydeck
Don't know anything about a quiz night, but Ryans is a nice little bar. Tiny place, but nice atmosphere and the best Guinness I've had in Munich so far. Owner is a guy called Vernon, very friendly bloke. Well worth a visit.
RuggedyMan
Can't go anywhere, any night, until my 4 evening a week German course is finished. Only 1.5 more weeks to go though and then freedom...

I also have / am in the process of moving to Schwabing, so it is sadly not that handy for me anymore. Will miss good old Neuhausen, nicest part of the city to live in, IMHO.
Hazza
I've been to the Muddy Boot quiz night once, and I'm going again tonight. I went there one night with a mate, not knowing there was a quiz on and ended up winning the thing. It's a very small pub, though, and teams are limited to 4.

Also, I heard the lease on O'Reilly's is up in May and it'll be closing down for good then. The owner has a new pub near Hofbräuhaus - the Gallway Hooker, so we may be going there for Quiz's next year
jkamp
So Shennanigan's is closed? Interesting... I will call to make sure that it didn't reopen somewhere else, because the person who told me about it sounded like she had just been there. But what do I know? It's my second week in this country. Though I return to the states next week for the holidays...

So O'Reilly's innocently hosted some shady activities? Hmmm... I still think it was timed to perfectly coincide with my arrival. Oh well, I liked Ned Kelley's. That will be my Thursday night routine.
Malcolm Spudbury
Anyone know if O'Reillys have finished the "reparation" of their toilets yet?

Or are we just going to have to go and join jkamp in Ned's tonight instead of doing the quiz?
hoddysded
I don't think they are open again Spud. I tried calling after opening hour and no answer. I think the only thing whatshershit's told us that was true was that it involved a toilet...their business went down it. It sure doesn't take a week (not even in Germany, the home of efficient workers  ) to fix a friggin loo.
koala
No ideas from this corner... I can't make it anyway. It's my work 'Christmas do' tonight!
Jake McVitie
According to Sarah, O'Reilly's is now closed for good. As I thought, she says they're bankrupt - no mention of any dodgy dealings in the bogs.
