the vote failed because of the usual suspects: China and Russian vetoed the motion. They don't want to set a precedent of the UN security council getting involved in what they see as internal politics.

And perhaps because their houses are not exactly in order when it comes to human rights and questioning the leadership...

exactly.

it is particularly outrageous that Russia vetoed it since last week Medvedev supported sanctions against Zimbabwe at the G8

An historic power-sharing deal is due to be signed in Zimbabwe, aimed at ending a prolonged political crisis.

Leaks of last week's agreement suggest that Robert Mugabe will remain president and retain control of the army, but his powers will be reduced.

Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai will be the new PM with substantial responsibilities, including police.

However, the proposed agreement remains fragile at this stage, BBC regional correspondent Peter Biles says.

Some movement at last

Finally there seems to be some movement on this issue but how will it work if one controls the army and the other the police?

Obviously Mugabe was backed into the corner, but you can be sure that this wily fox has something up his sleeve. He will not willingly concede any real power to Tsvangirai while he still has breath in his body. I'm sure that many Zimbabweans wish somebody would do something about that.

He has become madder and madder in the past years. It is rumoured that his mistress has Aids, perhaps he also has syphilis which might explain the delusions and total descent into erratic behaviour. For sure the people of Zimbabwe are suffering miserably. No surprise that there are public demonstrations in favour of Mugabe, since the majority of these people are said to be coerced to attend (and possibly also fed). Stick and carrot.

Wife Grace is also not the most positive consort in this equation. Rumours heard in Namibia suggested that she had raised money for poor children and then spent the proceeds on a shopping trip to Paris.

Mugabe still not giving up? (From BBC)

QUOTE
Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has allocated key ministries to his own party - in defiance of a power-sharing deal, reports say.

The opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) said the move had put the deal "in jeopardy".

Looks like they are still some way from solving this one.
