So am about to go down to my marktplatz to my favorite French cheese shop. And I just made French toast for my kids. Now I read this...
Yahoo! News:
Analysts say British entente need not hurt Germany.
QUOTE
French President Nicolas Sarkozy's proclamation of a new Franco-British entente this week is a symbolic blow to Germany but need not dent its international influence, analysts say. On a state visit to London, Sarkozy said while the Franco-German friendship was a cornerstone of post World War Two European reconciliation, it was no longer enough to enable Europe to play a full role on the international stage. ... "It's no secret that (German Chancellor) Angela Merkel doesn't like Sarkozy at all"

They should show they are serious by starting to drive on the right side of the road.

I rather like this part of Sarkozy's speech:
QUOTE
France hasn't forgotten, she will never forget that when she was almost annihilated Britain was at her side. She will never forget the English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish blood mixed with the French blood in the mud of the trenches. She will never forget the welcome the British people gave General de Gaulle and Free France. She will never forget the heroic resistance of the British people without which all would have been lost. She will never forget the fine young people who came from all over the British Empire and laid down their lives on the Normandy beaches and in the surrounding bocages.

Sarkozy`s new wife is definitely an improvement on the miserable bitch he was married to before. Hope he showed Britain what women are supposed to look like.

That's what I thought. Isn't UK/France an impossible combination in NORMAL times? Will there be holidays in Paris for free again?
BTW, did anyone read in BILD, that a Hamburg Junge Union chairman was member in the studivz-group "Nach Frankreich fahr' ich nur auf Ketten"?
Scary all that!

I am of the opinion that the French and Germans get along well with the English, and more so the Germans than the French. However the cordiality between the Germans and the French is not so real and the image given by Chirac and Schröder was all fake.

Well what he actually said is:
QUOTE
Of course, for we French, Franco-German friendship is one of the cornerstones of
European reconciliation. I am convinced that in today's Europe the Franco-German
engine is still essential. But it is no longer enough to enable Europe to act and bring its
full weight to bear. We need to rally the 27. We need first of all this new Franco-
British entente.
And if anyone wishes to read the full speech, without the intepretation of the press, it is here:

Many of the Germans I have worked with are not at all keen on the French. This is the problem its all cosy till very impotant questions come up, then neither France or Germany will give in to each other. The EU is bound to end in tears. Just look at the history books.

Serious comment wanted?
Sarkotzy (the knut) wants to be the French Thatch*r.
Therefore it makes more sense to be chummy with the New Labservative government in London than the shaky government in Berlin.
As it is still only a minority of the CPD/SPU federal government that has the will to try and really fuck the working class (and yes; that means YOU), in Germany.

I was brought up to hate the French amongst many more here i'm sure, i will personally never forgive them for selling Exocets to Argentina and technical help in using them during the Falklands War.

Who deliberately let Argentinia invade British territory so she could send working class men to their deaths for the sake of an election she would have otherwise possibly lost?

It still doesn't excuse the French compliance and intervention.

No discussion mate. "L'Etat" (and that's your actual French

) will follow its own goals.
Whether they are in tune with the interests of the population, in France or otherwise, is of course another thing entirely.
N'est pas.

I wouldn't say that the EU will collapse in the near future, at least not the "core EU" with Benelux, Italy, France, Germany, who were founding members.
On the other hand I think you are right with what you said first. I have got the impression that people here are less interested in Germany's neighbouring countries (and the other way around) than some politicians want them to be. I have got a friend from Aachen and in his opinion "Holland is really a shit country. I never go there." He lives 5 km away from the border! Another friend is from Überlingen/Bodensee. I once asked him whether there are tight relationships between the Swiss, Austrians and Germans in the Bodensee-area. He said that there are common regattas and things like that but that people don't know each other well.
I would go abroad as often as I could if I lived near the border because I find it fascinating but...

JN, that WAS serious comment, despite the late hour I wasn't totally bollocksed drunk.
It's also partially for French domestic consumption of course.
Sarkhazi's popularity is wobbly and will fall when he tries a new rounds of welfare "reform" ie cuts and this improves his "great statesman" credentials.

If the EU goes to hell we (and most nato nations) will be busy at home. You will also be taking over all the stuff in Afganistan and Iraq.
Iran you can manage, I would not want to be in no-mans land if it goes pear shaped with China.
English, love the french!!! Whaaaaaaaattttttttttttttttttt...???

I'd like to see a new Anglo-German alliance, just like pre-WW1 relations. Both countries were in love with one another back then. The British the cousins of Germany and all that. Then afterwards I'd say kick out the French, that'd make things a hell of a lot easier. Merkel and Brown could make a good partnership, even though she's a bit of a unit and so is he.
