Hi,
Just moved to Frankfurt two weeks ago... pleasantly suprised by the sun at the moment!! From London, 27, only know about 3 words of German so meeting as many english speakers as possible would be a giant leap in the right direction.
If anyone wants to say hello, or offer any suggestions on getting to know more people here it would be good.

Hey all,
My name's Sasha, and I'm here in Frankfurt (actually living in Hattersheim) for 3 months while I intern at Sanofi-Aventis. I spent January through March taking classes in Berlin through an Abroad program my school (Stanford University) offers. I had been back in California for the past three months, but now I'm in Germany struggling to speak the language until September :) My friends are scattered all over Germany and most are clustered in Berlin, so I'm looking to hopefully hang out with some new fun people during the week/weekends here in the Frankfurt area. I don't know exactly how this site works, so I apologize if this was an awkward post!
Hope to meet some of you while I'm here!

Any Kiwis living in the Darmstadt - Dieburg area? (I'm actually in Dieburg but the system won't let my say that, so I'm stuck with Darmstadt.) Be nice to hear some decent English again ;-)
My name's Bob, I'm 55, I'm single, I come from South Auckland, New Zealand, and I work as a freelance translator here in Dieburg. I haven't got a car so I'm not too mobile but it would be nice to hear from any other Kiwis around this general area. I've actually been in Germany since early 1989 but I moved here in early December 2007, so I'm still quite new to the area.

Hi everyone,
I am not new to Frankfurt, I was even born here. But I lived abroad and in other cities for quite a while (I am 26) and I would be glad to meet up with people with intl background. Maybe it helps curing my Fernweh/Wanderlust. Also, friends and I organize parties in changing locations once a month with quite a mixed crowd. You find all the details on our webpage:

Hey everybody.
Wow, this is the first new post here in a month! Well, just moved here from Canada a couple weeks ago. I'm stuck living in godforesaken Eschborn, but I grab the S-bahn into Frankfurt whenever I can (which is most nights).
I'm going to be spending a year here, so I should probably make some friends, seeing as my only constant english-speaking friend is CNN World, and I gotta tell ya, that gets old fast.
I think I might partake in the FNDC... sounds interesting!

I'm Hermes, a grad student at Goethe University. I have met some of you in the FNDC the last two weeks. English is not my native language, but so far it is my only way to communicate here in Frankfurt. I plan to learn German at some point, and also improve my English skills by joining some of the events of Toytown.

Hi everyone,
I already wondered where I could introduce myself - so I just popped into some threads I found intersting ;-) Okay - I'm not an expat - but I was when I worked in London some years ago and I worked for international companies with collegues from all over the world. So I know how it feels - and I remember that I felt like an alien when I came to London!!! Took me a while to figure out that you have to get your drinks at the bar and don't get them served at your table ;-)) Unfortunately I worked mainly national the past 2 years and being in Dublin about three weeks ago I noticed how much I miss speaking English and talking to people from other countries... so - I "googled" - and landed here ;-) Being German I hope I can help making you guys feel a bit more home here! And if you think a German is being rude... remember - it might be just a difference in culture ;-))

Hello everyone,
I'm Roz, 26 yrs old and English. Moving to central Darmstadt in early October. Currently a biochemist trying to finish my PhD thesis (very good at procrastination today!) and will be trainee lawyer when I move. Can't speak any German yet, but want to become fluent within a year. My main passion is classical dressage - I'm planning to become/undertake a Reitbeleiligungen (horse share) when I've saved up for a German car. But I also enjoy yoga, sailing, cycling, badminton, swimming, ice skating, dancing, drinking cocktails, climbing, walking, jogging, shopping.
Expect to be a bit miserable this autumn, getting used to Germany, trying to learn German, leaving science, not being a student, living in a city again, and missing my boyfriend. This may result in me getting a little carried away when I fit out my unfurnished flat with Ikea furniture ;-) Would be nice to get in touch with some English speakers in the area :-)
Roz.

OH now that is an extremely high and optimistic goal! I came here for the first time for a year whilst halfway through a degree in German. MyGerman before was average. I socialised with a lot of German people and was studying at the university but sadly after that year I wasn't fluent. Even now after living here for 8 years I am unsure as to whether I can say 'fluent' or not. I guess I am pretty close to native speaker level so that is probably fluent. It depends on how keen you are to learn as to how far you get
Hope the move goes well and whenyou arrive check the forum again for meetups and other events to meet some English speaking people

Hello everyone! Im a 24 year old new zealander! I have been offered a rugby contract just out of Frankfurt and am really quite keen to move there. However I also have an offer in holland just out of amsterdam and my partner wants to go there! has anyone been to both places? and where would you recomend living? lifestyle wise? thankyou everyone!

Aug 22 2008, 1:54 pm
Hey Kiwi, didn't know that rugby was that bigga sport over ere.
Anyways having a german misses in Germany and living in Holland for the last 2 years (being an auzzie), I have had my fair share of living on each side of the boarder. I am also moving to frankfurt next week permanently for work.
With regards to your question..
There is no real answer. But i have added some points that may help you choose...
-If your language skills are anything like mine, the Dutch have a lot better english skills than the majority of Germans. so it is easier to explain yourself for more technical things. however, Germans are a lot easier to understand in their native tounge than the dutch language once you pick up some up.
-And in that respect Dutch TV/ Cinemas have english shows/ films whereas the majority of german TV and cinema is voice-overed.
-When it comes to nightlife germanys a clear winner. And the beers are more than twice the size for round the same price. (and taste better)
-If you like Football (Soccer), Germany has a far superior league.
-Frankfurt is pretty central. you can get to a lot of places from there in quite little time. Holland is tucked into a little corner.
-I find Germany has a lot more rules and regulations for everyday things eg golf licence. I find Holland to be more relaxed in that sense. But a visa in Holland can end up being a long ordeal.
-Getting a propper job in Germany without speaking german is a lot harder. there is quite a few job places in holland for english speakers
-I find German people to be more open than Dutch but maybe thats just my experience.
-What ever you choose im sure either choice will be great.
By the way there is a direct train to Amsterdam from Frankfurt.

Wouldn't have fancied that walk either, reckon it would have taken all day! Thanks for putting me in touch re work, shame it didn't work out but I owe you and SP a beer I reckon!
@ marie-claire - I've no idea how long it's been there so may be a recent addition? There was also a boat bar further along, an old wooden one resting on the grass. Hello. Just returned to Frankfurt after a three year absence (makes the heart grow fonder and all that). Have spent the last year living in Berlin (Schöneburg if you are interested). Hi,
I've just moved to Frankfurt and working in Bürostadt. I'm British, have previously lived in Germany (and speak dodgy German), female, late 30s and living here during the week (home at weekends). Would be interested in meeting up for informal after-work drinks, cinema, theatre, a meal or some sport after work (Monday to Thursday). Even shopping and a coffee (OK I miss Bluewater) trip after work.
I read about yoga/pilates classes but they seem to be a bit outside of Frankfurt and I only have my own two legs or a pushbike as transport. Does anyone know of anything in Frankfurt central or Sachsenhausen/Niederrad area?
Thanks,

Hi All,
Congrats on the site, exactly what you want to find when you hit a new town. Well I got into Frankfurt two weeks ago, not completely without a lifeline, my sister and brother-in-law live here, various aunts and uncles, cousins etc. So as you can appreciate tha last couple of weeks has been a non stop PR campaign to smooth over why I haven't called in the last ten years!
Anyhow, my German is as rough as guts (but coming back day by day), and this looked like the place to put my brain into neutral for a bit and chat with people who understand that "YES"... Gin and Tonic needs ICE!!
Moved over from Melbourne, a decision made after my last work trip to Fft. Change of scene, travel Europe on the side, drink beer and eat snags till they come out of my ears.
Had worked through a few recruiters before coming over so the interviews have been rolling out...guess I'm in for a few more rounds before the fat lady sings though. PS. Just a bit off track but I pissed myself over the What Food You Miss From Aus thread...I've been here two weeks and I shit you not if I dont get a large Dim Sim (the big yellow bastard) soon there's gonna be a lone gunman on top of the Alte Oper! (Calming down now!)
Any tips on buying cars here? Been working through Carscout.de, getting stories from all sides about getting a 4WD because of ice and snow, getting a diesel because of the price of petrol etc. Seriuosly one of my Uncles nearly shit his pants when I through out the idea of getting a Hummer! (Honestly, he may have shit his pants...or that could just be how he smells...either way, not going back any time soon).
Anyhow, now that the uncle shitpants story is out of the way, keen to catch up with whoever from wherever so long as there's a bit of english. Love Curry, Thai...in fact any asian food, Italian, French...whatever's going actually. Looking through the events and catchup's there seems to be quite a bit going on... I'm grabing out the diary now.
Hopefully catch up for a beer with a few of you soon.
Cheers,
Matt

Ok well maybe there is more ice and snow here than there would be in Melbourne but I don't think you'll need a 4 wheel drive. I have a Nissan Micra and drive every day up to the Taunus where there is quite often a lot more snow and ice than Frankfurt in the winter and my winter tires serve me just fine.
I think you'll also find that diesel is about the same price as petrol anyway and diesels are way more expensive.
As for the Hummer thing do you think your Uncle took it literally (as I did) and had visions of you driving around in a lobster? I dunno I have no idea what a Hummer is (apart from German word for lobster) but imagine it is one of those big truck type things and well probably a nightmare for parking, fuel and bad for the environment.
To be honest if I was to move again I'd make sure it was somewhere commutable to work by bike or train so I wouldn't need a car. Petrol prices are not going to get cheaper so I think buying a car is an unnecessary expense

Thanks PM, I think she may be a touch paranoid too...she lives near Limburg, lots of little country lanes etc and has spun out a couple of times.
Anyhow, the car is more for getting out and about to see the country on the weekend, definitely go bus/train during the week for work.
Anything else to watch out for (apart from the normal dodgy antics) with car dealers?

I've got a car for sale! I've got a car for sale! And I'm not a dodgy car dealer, just a normal person, about to move back to England...

Link is posted on the adverts section of the forum. It's nowhere near a hummer, but it is diesel, comes with winter tyres and is a reliable ride! Give me a call if you want more info, number is on the ad. Cheers.
