Hi,

Just moved to Bornheim area, FFt. abt 2 months back, after staying in Michigan, USA for 4 yrs n Orignally fm India.
Find a (little bit less than)drastic difference in culture here... Most people here dont just flash smiles at strangers (hence i ended up looking like a weirdo most times i did that) like in the US , u can start a whole new conversation with a stranger for no reason whatsoever outside even a Factory outlet store... u get the point..
But people r helpful n sweet nevertheless (like.. to help u find out 'Haar spulung' ohmy.gif if u r not moving around with a dictionary in a store)
Overall I love the place... cept I dont speak german unsure.gif .. (yday a nice old lady was saying something to my 3 yr old on the train and all i cud do was smile back (hope she was saying nice things.. )
Anyhow, would b great to know English speaking folks. m so glad 2 bump into this site. (Hope itll hep me not 2 feel like an alien in neptune anymo)..

Tschuss!! (yay, i know few german words.. LMAO)

Looking fwd 2 a meet up of everyone .. (though most of the meet ups r wine and drinks related.. i dont drink those.. rolleyes.gif )
Purple Muffin
Hi and welcome,

I live in Bornheim too and it is the best biggrin.gif

Yes it is a bit different culturally but when you get used to it you do also start to appreciate it in some ways.

Ah we are not obsessed with wine and drinks (ok well not that much) how about the book club?
bail_me_out
Thanks PurpleMuffin,
n U bet, I mean abt Bornheim being the best.. its a nice n sweet place with a gr8 makt area! Love it..

Hmm book club not a bad idea... and even for the drinks - ill prolly take an Apfel Schorle biggrin.gif.. when u guys meet up 4 drinks..
For the book club.. is there any library nearby.. and whats the system here (pardon my ignorance..) unsure.gif

so .. wheres the next meet up... ? cool.gif

Hi,

I arrived in Frankfurt (Kronberg to be precise) about a week ago to start a new job and a new life (well as much as you can when you are only 22!) I'm living and working in Kronberg right now as a mechanical engineer but looking to move further into the city centre in the coming weeks (was thinking Bockenheim area as it lies along the S4 line which runs out to my work in Kronberg)

I'm originally from Scotland although I've just spent the last year working and living in London. Would be good to meet up with people to hear about the do's and dont's of finding accommodation in Frankfurt.

Let me know if a meet up is planned!

Cheers,
Colin

Welcome!

Yeah Bockenheim and Kronberg rule! I live in B/heim and work in Kronberg too and the train journey is not too bad at all and usually remains reasonably unaffected by most delays/strikes!

As for living in Bockenheim- have a look around the Leipziger Str. area- I personally think that's the best bit.

There's plenty of folk about anyway and a curry night and a few other get togethers organised through here. You should find it OK to get into the city to such affairs from Kronberg and even easier from Bockenheim

Enjoy.

Hi Colin
Likewise I'm a newbie in Frankfurt... since you've found this website then you are definitely on the right track.

There's a fortnightly Curry Night - great way to meet intersting people, exhcnage experiences etc...

If you have been following the World Cup Rugby - O'Riellys (Irish Pub) - opposite the main train station is the venue to go to.

Cheers

Hello Everyone! My name is Trish, 24, and new to Frankfurt. I am staying with my boyfriend and was planning on being here for about a week for vacation but have since decided to stay! I will be here until the end of December and would love to meet some English speakers (I speak no German). Also if anyone is looking for a tennis partner I would love to play. And I am free all day everyday - if anyone has any charity organizations that could use an English speaker for anything I would really like to get involved. Spending all day alone in this apt is getting quite boring! Hope to meet some of you soon! biggrin.gif
Cheers

Hi,

I´m not really new to Frankfurt, but spent the past 9 month living and studying in Prague. I was an expat there and fortuantely met nice fellow expats from lots of different places. Since my Czech wasn´t good enough, I had to rely on doing most things in English - and ended up liking it!

So, I´m looking forward to meeting new people through this site.

Best regards,

Jessica

Hi all! I'm also new to Frankfurt (and Germany), I arrived 5 days ago from Canada. I'll be working here for the next couple of months, and staying in Sachsenhausen. I'm trying to pick up a bit of German here and there, and am looking forward to exploring all that this city has to offer! I'm interested in meeting people to check out different events going on - I like all types of food, music, art/film/cultural events, or just shooting the breeze over some drinks. I'm pretty much open to anything. I'm not really sure how this site works yet...can anyone just show up to these event/meetups, or do you have to RSVP? How would one recognize you if you're new?
Look forward to meeting some of you soon!

Yes anyone can show up and everybody is welcome biggrin.gif Just confirm on the thread of the event you would like to go to or in some cases as in curry night there is a sign up sheet which you will find under extras in the top right hand corner.

As for recognizing people you'll either hear the English speaking voices or you can ask the waiter for the the name the table is booked under and he can show you.

Oh and welcome to Frankfurt biggrin.gif

Hi,

My boyfriend and I are also new. We have asked a few questions already, so should introduce ourselves.

We are from Canada and moving to Frankfurt for work. I am arriving as of the end of December, just after Christmas, and he follows in the new year with our dog, Archie.

We will be looking for a place for Feb 1st.

We don't speak German, but are hoping to learn.

This is a great site, and look forward to meeting you!

Hey!

Live in Sachsenhausen, so am out and about there a bit.

Hi and welcome,

Good luck on the job hunt. We are having the next curry night inSachsenhausen next Wednesday and you are more than welcome to come along. Otherwise check the threads there are always people meeting up and wanting to do stuff biggrin.gif
Jessie7
Excellent! I looked at the Currynight, looks/sounds great. How many people usually go? And of what kind of ages?
nick60599
Usually double figures in terms of ages, sometimes 15+. Obviously it depends on work etc.

All kinds of ages at Curry Night - I am now a regular and I am by far the youngest (18) and I think the oldest is early 40s. Sign yourself up, there is something for everyone so to speak.
Jessie7
Oh wow, i thought id be the youngest (20) comforting to know that there are other people around my age. Yeah well will definalty sign up for it, sounds great. And iv heard good things about the resturant, so should be good!
Purple Muffin
Oh crumbs there was a time when I classed myself as one of the youngest - seems like those days have gone!

But seriously though we are a big range of ages nobody feels too old or too young biggrin.gif
Jessie7
Excellent. Well iv just signed myself up and added my boyfriend as a guest! So i guess we shall see you all there smile.gif

Hi, Josh here, can't believe I've been here for so long before finding these forums. Anywho, here's me:

Been here for nearly 4 years, living just 15 minutes from Frankfurt in Griesheim (basically a suburb of Darmstadt).
23 years old, and looking to make some more english speaking friends in the area. I work with alot of American military, and many of my local friends have been rotated back to the States recently.

Hopefully I can make some more here wink.gif
Purple Muffin
Hi Josh and welcome,

My boyfriend used to live in Darmstadt and still works there. He plays in a regular poker group if you are interested?

Otherwise loads of stuff going on here why not come along to curry night on Wednesday?
josh p
I'm new here too, and my name is also Josh. I'm 22, and have been living in Germany for two months so far. Despite taking three years of classes in the States about 5 years ago, I've had a hard time re-learning German here. I'm living in Lutherstadt Wittenberg and working at a university until the end of December.

If anyone is in the Sachsen Anhalt region and knows of something to do or wants to grab some food/drinks, let me know. Or if anyone knows where I can watch some American football, please please please let me know.

Edit: Apologies, thought this was a general forum, not just Frankfurt. Ignore this post (or come to Sachsen Anhalt and visit... :-))
JamesH
If working this wednesday night, but I'll definetely make room for future curry nights.

hello peeps.

I am new in town and am well up for meeting some new folk. My German is non-existent, however my English is definitely above average ! I just moved here from the Caribbean after two years, although I am originally from Ireland. I just started working for an investment bank and am hoping to meet some nice people to have some banter with, and perhaps occasionally drink some beers !!

cheers,

Action.

Hello All!

I'm new to the Frankfurt area and living in Koeningstein (close to Kronberg and near Oberursel). Moved here from Southern California to work as an au pair for a year.

My German is getting good enough to say "I don't speak any German", "I'm sorry" (which is very useful) and "I don't know." So it's really wonderful to have conversations with English speakers. I would love to get together with people in the area for coffee, German practice, or general moral support.

Hi All

I have recently moved to Frankfurt, from London, (about 2 months ago) with my German boyfriend. I know the city fairly well from visiting a number of times but moving here is a very different experience :)

I am hoping this site will be a great way to meet more English speaking people. I have a wide range of interests and love meeting up with friends for coffee/drinks/eating out/dancing/sports. I am also really interetsed to see that there is a book club running. Whilst I learn German and decide on what to do jobwise I have a lot of time on my hands for reading ;)

Even though culturally it is not a huge leap, I feel like there is still a lot to take in and learn living in a new country, not least mastering the language, so would love to get some views form old hands - any advice and experiences will be very well received!

I am not that smart when it comes to online forums and sites like this but I think i can figure out some of the meet-ups and will come along!

Looking forward to meeting some of you

Hey

Ok I'm a little outside Frankfurt and I've been on here a while, but better late than never! I'm living in Marburg just now, on my year abroad from studying German at university. Still living in hope that my German will improve simply by taking trips to the shops, but fairly unlikely. Well say hello, especially if you're near here - the novelty of being Scottish and bad at German seems to have worn off with the local students...

All the best

Hi All

Been posting for a couple of months now - and this thread totally passed me by . . . so here goes anyway.

Moved here in October from the UK; we've finally lost our Ex-Pat virginity (after a couple of false starts). The missus works for a large international ad agency in Sachsenhausen, and I work from home as a copywriter and corporate communications consultant. Main gig at the moment is for a large (OK - *huge*) US IT company. All other writing gigs welcome, of course LOL.

We live in a 360-year-old house in Friedrichsdorf - at the northern terminus of the S5 (end of the earth, there be dragons, etc. etc.). Don't knock it 'til you've tried it, chaps. We know it's hardly in the heart of things, but it's a great town, some top bars and restaurants, the train is only 30 mins into HBhf, it's 20 minutes to the airport (non-rush hour, natch) and we are five minutes from the nearest walking and cycling trails for the Taunus.

We have two cats: a 16-year old moggie, and a nine-month old Maine Coon (who I guess is properly speaking a Main Coon, now). Tavistock, the Maine/Main Coon, is on the cusp of terrorising the neighbourhood. We fear it is a matter of days only until the Friedrichsdorf Bugle (or whatever) carries the following headline: "Gebirgslowe auf dem losen in Friedrichsdorf" or something. He's big, everybody. Biiiiiig.

We love to socialise, travel, watch fil-ums and decent TV series, cook and enjoy good wine. Looking forward to meeting a good few TT'ers over the coming months and years.

First impressions of FFM are great . . . so let's see how long the honeymoon lasts wacko.gif

See you all around, I'm sure.

Hi guys,

Are you a British bloke or girl, about my age (~25-32)? Would you like to go out in Frankfurt? Drinks, cinema, theatre, museums, dancing...anything really. smile.gif

A little about me: I'm female, 26, live in North West Frankfurt and work as Software Engineer for a big international company. I love to do a lot of things: play music, sing, reading, sewing, go clubbing, go out for a drink (or two), cinema, theatre, museum, outdoor activities, sports... Well, I have to admit, I'm German. rolleyes.gif Hope that is not a problem? I really love Britain, British English, food, culture and Englishmen in general wink.gif . Have lived in London for some time and really miss being a Londoner...

I'm looking forward to getting to know you! Drop me a line soon.

Cheers,
Caz

Hi folks,

just moved to Frankfurt from Prague last month and looking to know new people around here. Will there be any social event(s) this friday/weekend? Be it anything, going out for drinks, dinner, theatre, clubbing, salsa, badminton or just walking :-) Would love to hear from anybody of you and go out of my apartment and eventually win over the laziness :-)

Just a quick introduction: I am male, 28, born in India, studied in Czech rep., Germany and Sweden and now posted in Frankfurt for my job. Working for the Stock Exchange here.

P.S. Any of you got any grand plan for the new year eve and wont mind me joining in, then just gimme a shout!

Thanks a lot and also Danke schön in advance,

Hi guys,

I had registered a while ago but had found no time so far to introduce myself. My name is Melanie, 28 years old and native german. After living and working in the UK for four years I got transferred to Bad Nauheim which is about 25 mins north of Frankfurt. Originally I am from a town very close to the Black Forest. So Frankfurt and the surrounding area is pretty new to me too. I really enjoyed staying in the UK and met some good friends there. Settling down in Germany took quite some time (and that for me being german - must be pretty tough for you guys) but I am finally getting there smile.gif

I like going out and meeting friends, whether it is for drinks, food, dancing etc. As I have not met many new people outside of work yet, I hope to meet some nice people here. I am into sports such as Basketball, rowing, rollerblading. I also want to get to know this area better so if anybody is interested in doing some "sightseeing" I am up for it. It is ashame that I know the UK better than my own country wink.gif

Cheers,
Melanie
bigmac
Hi everyone smile.gif

been in Germany since 1974 and finally found this site. (Guess i should surf a little more and spend less time in Second Life or chatrooms)

A little about me: A real Essex boy, moved from Watford (moved around a little after my birth) to Mainz after meeting a beautiful German girl on a Partner-Town visit (She stood out between the trips to the Burgermeister, Town Hall, Hospital and Old peoples home) and finally built a house in Niddatal, which is about 30 Km. north of Frankfurt. Worked for many American and German Companys and am now a programmer at a big 'Direkt'-Bank. After planting a tree, owning a dog and producing two great sons I am now semi-single again. Thats life!

I havn't been back to the UK for at least 15 years now, so it would be nice to talk to someone in good old english again. I enjoy a good whisky and a pint (or two) of guiness. Unfortunately at my age (although I don't feel it) its hard to find anywhere to go thats not playing rap or techno, or where the music is so loud that we have to use sign language to talk.

Welcome anyone who has suggestions for a good night out. (no, not the local retirement home thank you)

Regards
mac

ps. I am not really 'big', only 5'10, but the nick 'mac' was already taken. smile.gif

Hello All,
I'm Michael, 23, from England and I've just arrived in Frankfurt ready for starting a new job in accountancy. I know only a few people in the city and my German is shamefully basic.
I look forward to meeting some new people here on the forums and hopefully joining some of the events.
Thanks,

Hi everyone!

I'm Caroline and I have already been here for a few months. I'm 30, British, and I work for a law firm in central Frankfurt (but live in Bad Homburg).

Having just accepted a local contract with my law firm, I am now here for the long haul!

So, I am looking for some English speaking friends - I enjoy going out to restaurants, travel, photography, art (looking at it rather than knowing a lot about it!), literature, wine, discussing politics, films, yoga, and more.

Please do get in touch if you are similar-minded - it would be great to meet you!

Hi All!

My name is Bernie and I'm new to the area, just moved over from the states for my company and living in the Mainz/Frankfurt area. Would love to meet up with other English speakers as my German is horrible but I'll be enrolled in a class soon enough. Still apartment hunting (ugh) and getting used to the area, luckily have some friends who live here already so I'm no completely lost ... I just look like I am! Hope to meet up anytime anywhere in the Mainz/Frankfurt area.

Cheers!

Hi, Just found the newbie stream 8) This is really a great site! My husband, Matt, and I are moving to Bad Soden with our cat (Cody) and springer spaniel (Annie) at the beginning of March 08. We are both 29 and have been living in England for the last year and a half near London. We are originally from the States. I'm a project manager for a car company. Our German is, well, yes scary would be the best word. We are starting classes as soon as we go over - for which I'm sure the germans will be very thankful so that I stop torturing their language wink.gif My husband is a big outdoors guy - fishing, hiking, hunting, you name it. I am more the socializing, reading and travelling type. We'd like to meet other expats and are really happy to have found the forum.

Look forward to talking to you all 8) Kelly

Hi Kelly and welcome biggrin.gif

My boyfriend and I are quite into outdoors too camping, hiking etc. Frankfurt has easy access to many nice areas so I think you'll fit in quite well. Look forward to meeting you.

Hi All,

I'm Graham from Edinburgh. I found this site a couple of months ago when I started interviews and it's been a fantastic help already! My new job is in Neu-Isenburg so I've found some previous posts re requests for recommendations on accommodation areas. So I'm off to view an apartment in Saxksinhousing (yes, you can tell I'm going to be a natural with the lingo ;-) on Friday so fingers crossed. Living in the hotel next to the office (literally, 20 meters) is not good.

If there are any badminton players out there who fancy a game or can recommend a club, that would be great.

Looking forward to meeting some of the Frankfurt team in the near future.

All the best
Graham

Look forward to meeting you all soon,

Hello-

My husband and I moved to FFM in October and as the "trailing spouse" I am up for meeting other people who are around during the week and would like to get together for coffee or site seeing (what there is of it!) and shopping! We will be here until the upcoming Oct. and are 26 (me) and 28 (him). We have been to on of the Friday Night Drink Club meet ups but aren't up for that much during the week. Originally from Michigan and now living just north of the Ziel. I speak pretty much no German and would really like to meet up with English speakers!

Hi All-

Just joined Toytown, but already been to some events. I've already met many great people and hope to meet more. I'm originally from Chicago, but just came off an assignment in Hawaii. They shipped me to Frankfurt in January and I think I'll be here for a while. Of course I work for a bank, but the only thing I know about banking is taking out money from the atm. I enjoy traveling and think I've got a handle on Germany. I'm definitely looking to take some weekend trips to nearby countries, which I think all of Europe is included in that statement.
