Bayerische Staatsoper (Bavarian State Opera)

Upcoming performances for Nov/Dec.2004

By request, here is info on some opera shows (that I am involved with) for the rest of this year.
There are plenty of other shows going on so feel free to check those out as well.
Most shows begin at 7:00pm and tickets go on sale one month ahead of show time. Many tickets are cheap and student rates are available. Buy online, at the ticket office or from people pedalling them outside just before the show.
(Many hotels automatically have blocks of tix and sell them this way when their patrons don't want them.)
All shows have German supertitles unless the show is already in German so you won't be lost if your Deutsch is ok.
I recommend printing out the synopsis and taking it with you.

Die Zauberflöte

Nov. 3, 6, 11, 15, 20
Dec. 25, 28

A family favorite, Die Zauberflöte is geared for all ages. The ever changing sets and wonderful music keep the audience on their toes as the cute story unfolds of a prince who sets out to rescue a fair maiden. Yours truly has a small role late in the show but for the Dec. performances I have more significant part. cool.gif

Check out the video. Poorly put together video but it gives you a good idea of the show.

La traviata

Nov. 4, 10, 17
Last season this was the show that was sung by the Russian soprano Netrebko but she is so 'last year', right?
I had an orchestra rehearsal with Stephania Bonfidelli (pic above) this morning and don't worry, she can cut the mustard.
This tragedy is an emotional journey with amazing music and fantastic singers.
(La traviata's love story is also inspiration for about 1/2 of the movie Moulin Rouge.)
Again, I play a small but pivotal role. wink.gif

Otello

Nov. 16, 19
You know the Shakespeare story. 'Otello' is Italian for 'Othello', btw. No worries.
Deceit by jealous Iago convinces Otello that his faithful wife is unfaithful in order to destroy him.
In this show I actually get an action scene (a knife fight- that I lose).

I won't mention Elektra since I don't know jack about it yet and my part is only one page of music. tongue.gif
But check it out if you want.
Strauss. Good stuff.

Lastly, we have
La bohème

Dec. 20, 23, 27
The best show to see if you have never seen an opera before or if you are a veteran.
Four bohemian buddies experience love, life, lust, loss, lieberkase- you know, bohemian stuff.
Set on Christmas eve, this show is packed with wonderful music and a thrilling love story.
(The musical Rent and the other half of Moulin Rouge is based on Bohème.)
Highly recommended. Heck, I even get an aria.

I went to see the dress rehearsal of the Magic Flute, and it was just fantastic. It's a fairy tale and not just singing but also dialogue, mostly really funny, suitable for anyone; I'd say an opera for beginners (like myself), with particularly impressive soprano and base parts (also featuring our own profundo). Really I recommend anyone who wants to get a feel of the opera to go and see it. I absolutely loved it.
Showem
We gots tickets for La Bohème! Looking forward to the beeg shoe. We are going on Dec. 23rd, so shoot me a PM if anyone else is going to that show. We can meet up during the intermission and compare Profundo to Ewan McGregor...
canuck
@showem: I'd love to go...but I'm back in my home and native land. Have fun...

Actually I'm more like the nacroleptic tall guy in the funny hat. The tenors always get the ladies... (in the show wink.gif ).
Showem
Yeah, but few people know Jacek Koman...

This is the big week. There are two Magic Flutes coming up and 3 La bohemes, the first one being tonight.

On Thursday several of us are getting together after the show for drinks at the Blaues Haus.
The Jarvii, showem, me and the missus and her parents, and a few others plan to go.

Best, prof.

Profundo, do I gather correctly that you sing at the oper? Fantastic.

My husband and I are pretty keen opera goers (well, for the last few years at least, but we're not that old!) and just moved to Munich in December. We've already been to the Staats Oper a few times on other occasions and saw Monteverdi's Ulysses on Sat, you weren't involved in that were you?

For a leaving present from my company in London I got an abo for Munich and will be going to Falstaff, Madame Butterfly and La Calisto in the coming months, would be interested to know if we'll be seeing you perform!

I'd also be very interested in any gossip about who's coming to sing what, when, so I'll keep looking out for your posts.
