On Wednesday, December 5, we are meeting at Neustädter Diechl. It's in the backyard, next to Nordbad. Entrances are from Louisenstraße 48 and from Böhmische Straße 27. See a map at: www.neustaedter-diechl.de/plan.html
Neustädter Diechl is the most authentic GDR-style pub that I know. The food is real, too, and really good.

Due to the nice Drewag people cutting of my electricity yesterday (something I only found after getting home at 8pm) I could not make it last night.
I am not even a customer of Drewag... It seems that could be the problem, our new supplier has not taken us over and Drewag have decided enough free power is enough.
Sometimes you miss the little things from back home, like that little law that says the Power company have to let you know they are going to cut you off...

Did you guys decide on where to meet next week? It's customary for those who attend to come up with the location for the following week. Could you please post the location for next week. I'm pretty sure I will be over this laryngitis and will be able to join you by then.
Thanks,

Last night we were 9. The week before even 14 or so. It seems you were unlucky the two times you came to the meeting but usually it's a good balance between men and woman, Germans and foreigners, ages and professions.

Hi Guys,
We had a major party at Watzke's on Friday--bummer if you missed it.
We talked about trips to Prague, Vienna, and Tokyo as well as doing other events, Karaoke, bowling, getting pissed, etc on other days than Wednesday...
I am going to try to make a little mailing list with events like this that anyone can post to (like the movie event tomorrow).
If you want me to put you on the list and send you an update anytime I know about a (prospective) event, let me know with a pm with your e-mail.

Hey, there is a group of English speaking Foreign Language Assistants that would love to meet up with you all!

Feb 19 2008, 8:49 pm
Cool! Are they hot?
It should just be clear that this group is not for people who want to "learn English". You should be pretty proficient when you show up at these meetings (from what I have seen) or people don't really slow down to talk to you--that is just how it is.

I hate to differ with you, but if you're referring to Schlub then yes, it is intended for people who either don't speak english as a native language and want to learn more by associating with those who do, or people who are native speakers and want to associate with the the non-native speakers and perhaps learn a little German while at the same time make some new friends. Shclub was started by an English teacher friend of mine a few years ago. As a general rule, one should avoid speaking German if they plan to attend the Shclub meetings on Wednesday nights but it's not a hard and fast rule. I would really dislike it if non-native english speakers were dissuaded to come based on your comment about our club. If you're referring to the Toytown meetups, then I would agree with you. But they are two completely separate groups and just so happen to have crossed paths in the last 4 months or so. I for one would prefer it if these 2 groups of people would remain separate groups because the Toytown meetups are for ex-pats while the Shclub meetups are meant to be for non-native speakers and I would not want to as I said, dissuade anyone from coming to either based on some false pretense. I thank you for your comment about our club though as I welcome all comments.
Cheers,
Robert

I have actually no idea what Shclub is or Toytown or English club or whatever. I was just there on Wednesday sometimes and noticed that people who don't seem to speak such good English seem to be real quiet and might feel left out.
Maybe someone can explain to me all of these groups exactly. I think it is just cool to meet other expats and that was what I was using 'Wednesdays' (whichever group that is) for.
Thx!

If they seemed quiet it is probably because as you said in your previous post, something went way over their head. Shclub was created by an English teacher years ago for his students in order to help them learn English, and for native-english speakers to associate and make new friends. The site is here:
ShclubIt is not to be confused with Toytown even though the meetups have been posted here as of late. We found that attendence was dropping due to some key people moving to Paris and Berlin and other factors so we decided to post announcements about our meetings here.
Toytown members used to have blazing meetups up until one or two key people who usually organized things returned to their homelands. Perhaps someone can hold the Toytown torch and plan some Toytown ex-pat meetups where learning english is not one of the core reasons why people attend. But whoever that person is, my best advice is to just post events instead of keeping some email list because my experience is that most people don't like to be on mailing lists and would prefer the freedom to just check out the site and choose to attend or not, and not feel obligated to attend. Of course, if you want to keep a list of email addresses of people who you would like to keep in touch with then that is your own business. I would avoid posting such things as private house parties on the internet because you might get more people coming than you bargained for. In our Shclub, we sometimes post events and people either show up or they don't. But in the past even when just two of us showed up then we always made quite a nice day of it. Well, up until just a couple weeks ago that is... ... ...
Good luck to you in your search for more friends. It's always better to make friends than enemies. And I guess that is what this Toytown website is for, although you wouldn't know it by reading some of the posts.
Cheers,
Robert

I'll rephrase what I said... there a a few Native English Speakers that might like to join a meeting one time for no other reason than to speak English and talk about shared experiences. Though the prospect of desperate men is putting me off.

Hope to be there tonight as I missed last weeks meetup. As I posted earlier I'm from Austin, TX which is a pretty diverse and low key city...which is on the Colorado river...that's why I love that I live pretty close to the Elbe. Austin is known as "The Live Music Capital of the World" so if any of you know of any cool music dives please let me know. I left behind a pretty cool social scene which is why I'm stoked about meeting up and making some friends. See you all later.
