HI all,
I am looking for an English speaking attorney in Essen who is willing to take a case on contingency. This is a civil case (or what Americans call personal injury) that I will explain to the right person.

... an ... attorney ... to take a case on contingency.

Not permitted in Germany. That's why we all have Rechtsschutzversicherung (Legal insurance)

Ah ok and how does one get legal insurance? I still need a English speaker too.

I would start by searching for Legal Insurance

I would suggest this insurance is a necessity for dumb foreigners, especially those new to the place. It's all too easy to get caught out because of ignorance, because of a bad purchase, a vehicle accident a neighbour dispute, or a battle with your landlord and this is the insurance that saves you. I have a very, very comprehensive legal insurance which is worth its weight in gold, having helped me get out of, or minimise financial damage from things as simple as parking fines, via complex insurance claims to software counterfeiting. It's something you need from the outset, because once you have a problem to solve you can't buy it retrospectively.

It seems that you can't purchase it retropsectively though. Hope that helps smile.gif

Most Rechtsschutzversicherungen allocate the lawyer according the the case details. Some (more expensive) allow you a free choice. Most German lawyers have reasonable knowledge of the English language as an educational criteria. Once you sign up to legal insurance you have a 3 or 6 month period before you can even use (claim on) it, and you still can't engage it for a case pending prior to your signing the contract (otherwise no-one would buy it until they had a problem!)
