Welsh speakers in/near Frankfurt

Anyone here and want to meet up?

Hello,

Are there any Welsh speakers around in or near Frankfurt? I am currently studying Welsh and would like to meet some nice people to chat. In exchange I could offer any kind of assistance in learning German. If there would be even a bunch of people, we could also consider initiating a regular get-together in a pub or something like this.

I'm very curious about the responses smile.gif

Somehow I think you might seem to know what the responses are.

I am from Wales and although I was brought up speaking Welsh at school I no longer use it on a daily basis. As you have probably discovered Welsh people are not the greatest travellers and native Welsh speakers even less so. All the true Welsh speakers that I know live in Wales still and I have never met a Welsh speaker outside of Wales. The language has that kind of culture behind it and I think the mentality of Welsh speakers is that it is our (their) language and they just wouldn't understand why someone who maybe has a passion for languages would want to learn to speak Welsh. It is communication for Welsh people only!

If there are any 'native' Welsh speakers here then I imagine they would probably be less inclined to speak Welsh even if they could here.

I would say the best thing to do would be to go to North Wales but even then I am not sure what responses you would get from Welsh speakers there - they are not even keen on responding in Welsh to people from South Wales!

Good luck with the lessons anyway and if a meetup does happen I might be inclined to pop by just to test how much Welsh I can still speak smile.gif

Truly remarkable, truly.

It is quite amazing that you would want to learn an old celtic language, however I would agree with purple muffin, the Welsh do not travel ! So, you would have to go and live in Wales for at least 6 months to try and get a decent handle on the language !

Either that or learn Irish Gaelic, hell of alot more Irish in Germany than Welsh !

I'm a native Welsh speaker and have been living in Freiburg for over 20 years. And yes, I still like to speak Welsh.

A few years back, a group of students were studying Welsh at Freiburg Uni, and we met up from time-to-time for some chat in Welsh. Unfortunately, they all moved on, but I still keep in touch with a friend who is now at the Uni in Halle and who has written a number of books about Wales and learning Welsh for Germans.

Unfortunately, Freiburg and Frankfurt are a bit too far apart for a pub meet-up, but good luck with your search!
