Does anyone know if the stores will be open over the weekend and on Monday? Or is it going to be like Christmas where the majority or shops closed for the holiday?

Or head south to Austria - it's not a holiday down there.

If you're bored and don't know what to do over the long holiday week-end, here's a fun activity to consider:

Yes. It's a HOLIDAY!
Yeah, surviving Easter in Europe can be like provisioning for a siege. When I was in Switzerland, shops closed at 4pm on Holy Thursday as well as every Saturday.
Especially poor planning on my part, arriving at Tegel at 7am Easter Monday, waiting 15 minutes for a bus, and then having to subsist on easter candy and canned goods all day. Thank heavens for UHT milk.

Oh come on - that's an over exaggeration. Just a little planning - its not as if its 4 days without supplies. If you ever get snowed in you are in difficulties! Now I remember the
Schneekatastrophe 1979...

I read somewhere that this year Christi Himmelfahrt falls on the 1st of May. Does anybody know how that will work, i.e. will one of the holidays be lost or will there be two days in a row??

If 2 holidays fall on the same day I believe it counts as 1.

We are just out of luck this year. This isn't the UK
Just as if 1st May or 3rd October falls on a Sunday - too bad.
