Parts of North Germany most polluted in Europe

But so not bad if you live near Munich

QUOTE
Home to Germany's steel and coal industries, the area between Amsterdam and Frankfurt is the most polluted in Europe, scientists said. German researchers in Bremen based their findings on new, unique satellite data.

Apparently, the CO2 is the most concentrated of Northern Germany and it is due to the industry in that area. This is not really a suprise but it does seem suprising that Germany plans to open more coal burning power stations and will not contemplate nuclear energy. The pollution will only get worse up there unless they start building them down here.

Havnt really noticed that up here on NW side of Hamburg - any plenty fresh air from the North Sea...

This is just political ideology... I'm sure that Angie would accept nuclear energy but there is one party against & another party trying to out-green them (but only selectively - private air trips dont count)...

By some reckonings North Germany starts north of the Weißwurstgrenze and on that basis, the Ruhrpott's in North Germany.

Anything north of Münchner Freiheit You Barn station is Preiß'! wink.gif

Remember it's all about corrupt politics and money.

Damn...did they have to make it official...

Mostly likely true, especially after yesterdays fire in a chemical industry plant in NRW!

It's partly due also to the high propensity for people to commute by car up there compared to Minga, no?
Timmeh
Gimme a little bit of pollution over a little bit of Chernobyl anyday

It is also quite bad above Amsterdam. Given that most people use bicycles up there, what could be the cause of the pollution unsure.gif

Have you ever seen the A8 and A9 in the morning? Cars are just a easy political scapegoat, industry pollutes the atmosphere far more than cars. The new landing strip at Munich airport will probably bring far more pollution than anything else.

I can't get over the stupidity of the Greens opposing super safe, super green, clean nuclear energy in return for coal powered stations that spew their shit into the air.

Its not just that - look at the damage that coal mining causes & the legacy thereof...

I agree with that. Most people hold up Chernobyl as the reason not to go nuclear but that place was an accident waiting to happen. The "West" had been asking the USSR to close that place for years as they considered the design to be dangerously flawed and even offered to help the USSR decommission it and replace it. The French have over 75% of their power from nuclear energy and are the worlds biggest exporter of energy due to their nuclear power plants. They seem to be doing quite nicely.

I completely agree canaryman, but trying to sell this to the Germans based on valid, even scientific arguments is driving up the wrong alley entirely. What you should be doing is explaining that they'd have more leverage to diss the Americans, who as we all know are the sole destructors of our beautiful planet with their SUVs that they all own and their McDonalds and Bush and all.

The big player in coal right now is China, which is already consuming massive amounts of their own dirty brown coal and sucking in so much demand that even the Americans - the world's biggest source of coal - are exporting to them. Whether or not another coal plant is built in Europe vs nuke or vice versa is pretty irrelevant when you look at China.
canaryman
It is not a question of "another" coal plant, there are going to be quite a few built. I, personally, feel that if we followed the French example, it would help more than just the EU with regards to air pollution. I do not believe the answer to China burning vast quantities of coal is the EU joining in and burning vast quantities too.

This is quite an interesting document as it gives many technical facts, specifically, about the French nuclear power generating programme.
