Hi Folks,

Back again... after a long time.

Looks like Austin,TX is calling me. And I am doing a lot of research on the net on moving to Austin short term. AFAIK, there are quite a few people from Texas. So, if anyone has info/tips about relocating to Austin, pls help.

Basically, I am looking for:
  • Apartment
  • Schooling for 3rd Grade
  • Doctors
  • A pre-owned car
  • Opportunities to meet people for sports (badminton), German language practice and similar activities.
Any leads / tips or offers very much appreciated

Thanks,

Cheers,

I studied in Austin, and visited the city often growing up as my grandmother lives there - you're lucky to be moving there, it's an incredible city. Because there is such a gigantic public university there, along with several smaller colleges, most of the downtown/near-campus apartment complexes are overrun with noisy students.

For a family living in the city short term, I would recommend looking in the north/northwest areas of the city. For example, my grandmother lives off of Loop 1/MoPac near Far West Blvd., and it's a great area with convenient grocery shopping and good schools. My ex-boyfriend's aunt used to be a professor at the university, she and her family lived in this area as well and had only good things to say about the elementary school. There is also access to the shuttle system, which is good for getting downtown if you don't want to drive.

As for getting a car, there are about a million dealerships around, but I would also recommend checking out Craigslist because a lot of people use it in Austin, and I've heard of several people who happily got a great deal on a car through the site.

I can't think of anything else at the moment, but I hope this helps at least a little. Best of luck with your move, and say hello to Austin for me, I miss it! smile.gif

Austin's a great, great town. I've never lived there, but I've had the fortune to visit many friends that do. They're all in various sports clubs (football/soccer/softball), and there's a large active community in that regard. And the music scene is good. SXSW?

I'd second the recommendation for craigslist. At least for starters. For cars, you could also pick up an auto trader at any 7/11. They may also have online listings now, but craigslist is a good place to start before you get there.

And swing by the university. There's bound to be a social club for German exchange, etc.

Good luck!

I am soooooooooo jealous. A lifelong friend and his wife moved there from Chicago last summer simply because they wanted to live in Austin, and they love it!

I lived in Austin since '91 but I just moved to Dresden. Miss it already. Especially the food! You'll find that per capita Austin has the most eateries than most cities of comparable size. Everything from Tex-Mex to Thai to the best BBQ.

Craigslist is pretty helpful for buying and selling. I sold my car through that site along with alot of stuff that I had to get rid of before I came to Germany.

I lived in Southwest Austin and that's where I'd suggest. To me South Austin is a bit more happening. It's close to downtown and it has more of the feel of "old Austin" to me. Not as yuppified as north Austin.

Check out the Austin Chronicle's website for some more info.

Good luck and go to Freebirds and have a burrito for me.

they must have been gluttons for punishment. moving to austin in summer? that's whacked.

where to live? tough one. austin has changed sooo much since i left. there are hardly any "bad" areas anymore (well, I think the area in east austin off riverside is not appetizing). most of East austin is becoming very "white". lots of lofts and yuppie condos popping up everywhere, which has driven housing prices up and forcing the traditional residents, mostly hispanics to have a tough time with housing. my mom lives in what used to be north austin, but south of 183 in a really quaint, but old neighborhood. my brother and his wife bought a house in georgetown because it was affordable and she works at Dell (round rock), so her trip to work is easy, but that is all north of austin, so they need a good 20 minutes before they get to town. my brother teaches in the Pflugerville school district, kindergarden - i will fire off an e-mail to him and ask his opinion of elementary schools.

off of airport blvd where the old airport used to be, they are building up this huge complex, there is an old navy & best buy, hospital is getting built and nice houses. i was floored when i saw this new area. as far as i can still recall, south austin, i mean south of ben white (what's it called now - um 71?) probabaly is still lower cost.

Columbus,

I think the previous posters have done an excellent job in terms of offering advice about Austin. All that I wanted to add is that Austin is a GREAT city and I'm certain that you will enjoy every moment while you're there. Frankly, I'm extremely jealous of you right now...

Anyway, be aware that Texas Longhorn football is a bit of a religion in the Austin area (of course this is coming directly from one of the many disciples as I attended graduate school at the University of Texas at Austin).

Therefore, shortly upon your arrival, my advice would be to ask directions to Bevo's Bookstore located on "the drag" (this is the main boulevard that runs parallel to the university). Once there, kit you and your family out in a few Texas Longhorn T-shirts and after that I can assure you that you will be making new friends in no time at all ;-)

Take care and best of luck in the Lone Star state.

P.S. When you're settled in Austin, don't restrict your movements only to the city. The Texas Hill Country and the few lakes surrounding Austin are absolutely gorgeous.

Apartments.com is a good place to look.

Craigslist is also another good place to look.

I'm heading to "west Texas" pretty soon so I've been using those sites A LOT.

Austin is the greatest city on the planet.

BTW, I'll be following this thread as there's a chance I'm moving there this summer.

My husband and I are sooooo jealous! We met while attending UT and agree that Austin is our favorite place. Don't know when, but we'll end up there in the end.

It's changed so much since we lived there though that I can't really tell you much. South Austin tends to be more hippy/indie-ish. Northwest tends to be more mainstream to yuppyish. Housing prices in central A are sky high due to all the universities and college students in the area. There are patches of seedy neighborhoods all over town. The city police web site can give you more info on that. http://coagis1.ci.austin.tx.us/website/Cri...ewer/viewer.htm

You'll love it no matter where you end up living.

Hey, hey, congrats!

I'm moving to Austin in August and can't wait. If you're ever want for Bavarian beer while on the town, The Ginger Man has most of the Munich beers on-tap. Of course Spec's has almost everything available via special order.
