Suggested Germany-based charities to donate to

Who should I give my leaving collection to?
hodd
I'm leaving my job next week. It's a tradition that colleagues have a collection to buy a load of tacky gifts, which in most cases end up binned. I don't want to upset my colleagues (not much anyway) so I'd like to propose they give any monies collected to a Germany-based charity. The only reason I say Germany-based is for the ease and cost of doing a bank transfer.

Please advise on here or through a private message if anyone could suggest a needy charity, preferably with details such as account numbers, etc.

Don't get too excited; I'm not that popular, we're looking at about 50 euros here, but that would be better off in a charity's pocket than in my bin.

Thanks very much

Since I volunteer / work for this one, I know where the money goes.
They do some good stuff, only a tiny percentage of which is used to cover administration, etc.

Recommended, comes with a German bank account, too:

Great idea. I was going to suggest Doctors without Borders, but it's not exactly german based...

Not German but international. Ärzte ohne Grenzen in German and you can also donate via Überweisung.

Here you can find a directory of (German or international) relief organizations: http://www.hilfsorganisationen.de/

And remember that donations to registered charities are tax-deductible, so keep your receipts.

Yes, we have a Dauerauftrag, but I thought the OP was looking for something Germany specific. If not, Doctors without Borders is definitely a worthy cause...

I thought the OP was looking for something Germany specific.

I (the OP) probably should've been clearer, and the on-site editing of my title didn't help.

I would be happy for any charity to have my meagre leaving collection. I hope they appreciate it far more than me. I will give bank account details, etc, to my colleagues and leave them to it.

I'm not particularly interested in any German charity as such. I just thought there was little point in my suggesting a UK or USA-based charity on this website. I assume one of my colleagues would transfer funds from a German bank account, and the transfer fees overseas alone would likely swallow up half of my fund. Hence I proposed a German-based charity.

The German equivalent of Medicine (sp?) sans Frontiers seems a worthy option, so I'll ask my colleagues to send the cash to them.

Thanks very much indeed for your input.

...and make sure they get a receipt in your name so you can claim the tax relief (if only to donate it back to the charity). Watch out for the office shark who sends the money in his own name, gets the receipt and claims the tax refund himself. A common trick with more unscrupulous charity collectors.
