Opening times in Hamburg over Easter weekend

Shopping, buying groceries, restaurants, etc.

I found out today that my husband has Friday and Monday off because of Easter, and I'm wondering if a lot of shops and restaurants will be closed on these days? I'm having guests in town Fri - Mon and I want to make sure we can get groceries and do some things in the city. Is it a good idea to get groceries on say, Thursday, or will shops be open on Saturday? What about neighboring towns? We were thinking of going to Luebeck on Monday, but will it be worth a trip?

the shops will be open as normal on Saturday.

ppl are just going to run into the shops to stock up on anything as if they will never ever get food again, so if i'd be you go shopping on thur coz saturday shopping will be a nightmare. try not to forget anything coz you might end up standing queing up for the cashier for like 1/2 an hour.

Normal and full! Get there early if you want stuff.

Thats true, I would suggest going shopping on Thursday too.

Just as I thought. What about Friday?

Public holidays in Germany ...

Shops will be closed on Good Friday and Easter Monday (and of course Sunday). Shelves will be pretty bare by Saturday, most of the 'good stuff' gone, not to mention the hoardes of last minute shoppers so it's advisable to get your shopping done on Wed or Thurs

Just plan ahead (and look into crystal ball to determine what the weather will be like as this might affect your requirements).

Friday and Monday closed as they are public holidays, Saturday open, as said, but I don't think that the shops will be empty on Saturday. That's an urban myth that makes people go crazy on Thursdays, so it is true that people will go shopping big time on Thursday (and behave as if there will never be food sold again) wink.gif

However, we're meeting up on Thursday anyway, I'm going to Metro before our meeting, that's a huge wholesaler, originally for distributors, but I have a Metro card and can bring one extra person. So if you like you can join me smile.gif
Normally I would say be prepared for a consume shock, but it's probably still small in comparison to American hyper markets...

Great idea Hammonia. Thanks.

Does anyone know if the market in Eppendorf under the Bahn tracks (Hoheluftbrueke and up) will be open on Friday?

Friday - Karfreitag - is a public holiday so shops, banks etc. will be closed, and markets will not run... ANYWHERE.
marymanu
What about the market at Apostelkirche that runs on Saturday? Should that be open as usual? Is there a way to find out - I'd love to take my guests bust don't want to wait to shop until Saturday and have it not be open!
Hammonia
Saturday is a normal business day, like every other Saturday.
It's possible that there are some stands less if the vendors are on holiday, but generally the market will take place.

Have a look here for Wochenmarkt Info

After we talked about the whole thing yesterday: I think you are planning TOO much ahead, take it a bit more easy smile.gif hey, I thought I was over-organized wink.gif

You still in for Metro on Thursday morning?
What about 9ish?
marymanu
Hammonia,
I think you're right, I do tend to over plan. I don't think I'll need to go to Metro on Thursday but I'd like to join you another time. Thanks for the offer.
