This idea's been doing the rounds for months , time to make it happen...

An evening of Fish and Chips , preferably with scraps and mushy peas , at Molly Malones.

No date yet as I want to gauge numbers. If you're interested can you say whether a weeknight or weekend would be preferable and we'll set a date after easter.

Open to all but an understanding of the following video would probably help. (Yes , I know Hale and Pace are dire but it's one of their better efforts)

Yorkshire Airlines

Fish and Chips not obligatory.
madgibson

Eeeee chip butties

That's a good point. It might need some teacakes/breadcakes/baps to make this work properly.
HEM
I used to be able to bake eccles cakes...
SpiderPig
Aye.. count me in too duck..

Baybe we can persuade someone who i returning from Blighty to fetch us some Warburtons Bread for the butties
Mik Dickinson
Warburtons bread,Accrington bakery yummy but then again Greggs would do as well
Sin
Jolly good show chaps. One wonders if one should turn out just to help you with that northern inferiority and millworker complex you all know and love. The flat cap wringing classes are on me. Whippets and leeks at dawn it is then.
MadGolfer
Im thinking about my Oldham Tinkers collection... Nowt as good

2x Rochdalians & 1 foreigner are up for it
Jeeves
I feel another geographic identity crisis coming on
Sin
Yer a norferner Jeeves. Birmingham is further norf than the Watford Gap when seen from the saaf side. You are qualified to eat raw tripe, wring flat caps, go to foot of your stairs and deep fry After Eight Mints. I shall now add you to the others I look down upon. Welcome. smile.gif

There are good reasons I worded it 'North of England appreciation' and not 'Northerners'...

Did you have your lecense revoked because you've spent too long away?

Did you have your license revoked because you've spent too long away?

I hope not. Somehow I "went off" Eccles cakes. Can still do Parkin, Chelsea Buns (that's Southern!), Treacle Tart & so on. To say nothing of my famous steamed treacle sponge pudding.
Mik Dickinson
Anyone bringing their ferret wi em .Not had one of them down me keks for a long time

Apparently sponsored by the Family Planning Association... rolleyes.gif

Eh up.

Red or White, I'd be there on a week night.

Not sure if the missus would want to - even thought she's an honourary Yorkshire Lass - but if she does, we'd get a babysitter for a weekend meet.

Cheers,
LL.
GreenTea
Eeh, that'd be grand. Ah 'aven't 'ad a chip butty fer donkey's years.

Aye lad, an' you can turn yer map t'right way round fer a start. Aye, that's right ... wi' London right down there at t'bottom, where it belongs. An' north oop at top. Who's doin' the looking down now, eh?
Sin
Should you be out of mine this early of an evening, missus?
UrbanAngel
If you're Rochdalians, does that make me a Buryian? Burian? Hmm.
GreenTea
Sin: Can't make 'ead nor tail o' what yer tryin' t'say there ... any road, never did understand them toffee-nosed forriners from down saath.

UA: Ah used ter know a joke about Bury folk, only ah can't remember it just now. Any road, it's gerrin' late. 'Appen ah'll remember it in t'mornin'.
YorkshireLad6
sheesh... sounds like an event to be avoided...

I believe Sin is referring to the coal mine...alas they've been gone for manys a year.
Sin
No. I was referring to the mine what you get winter boob tubes and white boots out of.
bluedave
I think you'd be more likely to find that in Essex Sin. wink.gif
Sin
Absolutely not, bluedave. Strictly black FMBs in Essex. I do know about these things, you know.
bluedave
Hmmm, you may be right Sin me old fruit.

Just googled ' Essex girl boots ' and this is what it came back with . . ohmy.gif

Katrina
Those are not Essex girl boots. *tsk*
Black? Sin, as is traditional, is talking out of his ringpiece. Back in the day, this was the weapon of choice:
Pas
I've definatly seen the white ones around Batley. Sadly not the black ones.
leky
North of England appreciation evening blink.gif , you mean people actually appreciate the North tongue.gif

Arse'oles Modom. Those are never Essex boots. Easy way to tell the difference... if the soles are facing towards the sky at a 45˚ angle and the left and right are 90˚ opposed - them's Essex boots.

Ee by gum,

Sound good to me pet, me and the missus are up for it, just let us know where and when.

An evening of Fish and Chips

Are Fish and Chips particularly Northern? I thought they were pan-British.

I know Wheelers in Brighton do a rather scrummy fish and chips. And washed down with a Premier Cru Chablis they're absolutely to die for.

Aye, t'penny's dropped now. Any road, our folk weren't miners - we worked in t'cotton mills. If it weren't fer t'northern textile industry clothin' t'nation back in the day, yon posh folk down south ud've been runnin' around naked. Aye, yon Essex girls ud've been glad o' them boots cos they'd 'ave 'ad nowt else ter wear.

The first chip shop was in Yeadon. I think it's the use of beef dripping than makes a difference between the Northern and Southern versions.

Any ideas on a date yet Pas?
bluedave
Oh bugger YL6, what have you done? Let's await a proud 3 Lions now shall we? rolleyes.gif
gideon
Do we all have to wear cloth caps? Or will Barbour jacket be ok?
bluedave
Do Mollys allow whippets?
GSF_UK
Oldham was the home to the first Fish and Chip shop... well I never.

In Yorkshire I always called them "Fish Shops"... I went out with a lass from t'other side of the hills (Chorley) and she balked every time I said this.

The burning question (on all of our lips): Was it just my family who called them "Fish Shops"? I know, how WILL this website reach the dizzy heights of this topic ever again?

Yours hopefully...
bluedave
The Oirish call them ' chippers '.

Shall i bring some Northern Soul music for Maurice to play?

See how many ageing ex - Wigan Casino people can put their back out. laugh.gif

eurobabs
Depending on when you have it, I am up for it.
gideon
Coming from Hull well the nice bits of, obviously Fish and CHips was something major! The size off the cod used to be awesome! Can any body else remember the Bob Carver's Fish and Chip tent on Hull market and Hull fair.

@BD Wigan Casino!!!

Ooh, anuther reet posh sutherner! Does this place in Brighton serve the fish n' chips on a fine bone china plate, with silver-plated cutlery then? Wedgewood or Royal Doulton? Would Sir prefer his takeaway wrapped in the pages of Vanity Fair or Esquire? Premier Cru Chablis??? Gerra mug o' proper mashed tea down yer gizzard! Aye lad, if yer comin' ter this do, we'll learn yer good an' proper!
GSF_UK
Hull Fair... was always a big deal when I lived close by.

Love the accent.

"It's *snered* on Bev *rerd*. Best *fern* me mam".

Yeah?

I'm sure there's a sign in Yeadon that says something similar. There's probably one that says Robin Hoods buried there as well though.

Which would be rubbish as he buried at the back of a pub between Brighouse and Dewsbury. ph34r.gif
