Could never understand how a grass field in Doncaster became Robin Hood International Airport. blink.gif

Bit of tarmac works wonders... Or as my then girlfriend (shes from Hamburg & we've been married nearly 20 years now) wrote in an e-mail to my father "One does never cease" - I'm sure he got the wrong idea - or his worst fears about German girls were confirmed...
bluedave
Doesn't he have rather more connection with Nottingham though?

Or am i showing my ignorance ( again ) ?

In Yorkshire I always called them "Fish Shops"... I went out with a lass from t'other side of the hills (Chorley) and she balked every time I said this.

Never heard them called "Fish Shops" in south Lancs, where I'm from. It was always the "Chip Shop". Or just the "Chippy".

Shall i bring some Northern Soul music for Maurice to play ?

No way - although many years ago I did get shown around Strawberry studios in Stockport by a friend who did the "technik" for 10cc's concerts...

Me - I'm more into a concert with Steeleye Span (will see them in concert early May in Reading).

Hull Fair... was always a big deal when I lived close by.

It was one of those childhood things, we used to get really excited about it. Autumn became this amazing time, Bonfire night, Halloween, Hull fair. I hate the accent though, and am glad we moved out to the country. I do miss the long walks on the rain and wind and sea breakers on Spurn point. Day trips to Bridlington, weekends in Scarborough, Leeds for its fun nightlife. The sound of the fog horn on those foggy days, the small when the Fishing fleet came in and the wind blew the wrong way.

Ever had a few Pints there??

More like Robbin' Bastard International airport!

I used to love Harry Ramsdens before they got famous!
Pas
Many happy hours spent there when they had the airshows there when I were a lad and it was Finningley.
bluedave

Sheriff.

I was once accused of shaggin' The Duke of Devonshire's daughter, but I have no connection whatsoever with Devon.

You gonna drag your sorry arse down to Bayern for this one HEM?
GSF_UK
Well, let's get this Robin Hood thing cleared up.

Basically, as any self respecting Yorkshireman knows, the level to which he is connected with Nottingham is absolute poppycock.

He was born at the site where Wakefield Bus station is now housed.

He's buried just outside of Huddersfield.

He is probably associated with Notts, because he may have done some of his dirty work there. Sherwood Forest, we are led to believe, stretched all the way up to Yorkshire and he may well have used it for travel or hiding.
Pas
I'll be phoning Molly's tonight to see if we can get a date shortly. Expect some info tonight or tomorrow.

As for Robin Hood. Robin Hoods Bay also springs to mind as a Yorkshire location.
Pas
Game on for Friday 4th April, 7PM.

Robin Hood is as Nottinghamish as Boots the Chemist.

Rob Hood and yorkshire - pah, next you'll be laying claim to King Arthur and Father Christmas
YorkshireLad6
Even the myriad of TV programmes titled him as "Robin of Loxley" (near Sheffield)
Katrina
Does Loxley count as Northern? This is my issue with the whole thing - people from Carlisle: North. Morpeth? North. Penrith (not NSW)? North. Sheffield? Midlands. Peak District? Midlands. Lincolnshire? Midlands. Stoke? Yep, that's never Northern.
While there's nowt as funny as folk, think a few need a bloody map and compass. Oh for a Barmcake-Equator like the Weisswürst one.

Coming from Hull well the nice bits of, obviously Fish and CHips was something major! The size off the cod used to be awesome! Can any body else remember the Bob Carver's Fish and Chip tent on Hull market and Hull fair.

@BD Wigan Casino!!!

Northerner's night is here, yahooo!!!

I'll be there with me flat cap :-)

Gideon, I'm also from 'ull. I definitely remember Carvers' patties, chips and mushy peas! Do you remember they used to fry the fish and chips at 'ull fair using coal fired fryers on Walton Street (probably not these days!).

I can't believe you used to have Cod though when Haddock was so abundant! Cod is for Southerners ;-)

We always used to say that it would rain when you could smell the fish docks in West Hull (Easterly wind) and it was almost always true!

Looking forward to the evening,

James

The story is Robin hood is buried just outside Brighouse on private land between the town and Junction 25 on M62. The owner refuses to let anybody on and so remauins a story for now. Time Team from Channel 4 was interested in doing a programme there but again the owners refused.
The area of his grave at Brighouse is marked by a tombstone but there have been no excavations of the area since the 18th century.
Historical evidence of the burial site is given in the 15th-century ballad The Lytell Geste of Robin Hode and his meiny' and the Sloane Manuscript, a historical charter.

Been to Hull many a time, Playing Rugby League there against Norland, Orchard Park, Bransholme (Drug City!) etc (Hull is a very strong Rugby League area with some very good amatezur teams in Skirlaugh, West Hull, East Hull, Hull Dockers etc) and my ex wife coming from Cottingham. Going to the friendly Boulevard on a Sunday afternoon and watching my boys beating the Airlie Birds! Beverley Road was a good drinking street, believe it is the Student area.
