@BB

Do you think you could bear the surprise if he shot you?
BattalionBoy
It wouldn't surprise me if that American guy was shot in the back. It was in the dark you know. The guy wasn't equiped with night vision goggles. The police hunted him down with a thermal sensing equiped helicopter and shot him like an animal. The police probably had those helicopters with the bright beams like the ones they use to illuminate crash scenes. The guy was probably pissed out of his head and really upset - he didn't harm the girl and he didn't deserve to be shot dead.

Why did he carry a gun? Just for fun?
Why not shooting somebody in the back? It reduces the risk of being shot yourself.

I think given the situation and faced with the choice of doing the 'hey, buddy, I am unarmed, why don't you put the gun down' with the potantial of having yours guts holes wiht bullets and the 'lets follow proceedure' - bang.. I know which one I would take in the same circumstances.

Its very easy to say it shuldn't have happened, it need not have happenend. However, if he pointed the gun at the police they are trained to shoot first.

BB has a point in that this policy can lead to poeple being shot when there is no need, for example, someone shouts armed police. Most poeple would turn around I guess.

However, at the point in which the person turns around and pints the gun, regardless of finger on trigger, loaded or in prep to fire, the police will shoot.

The tragic pat of the story is, he did not deserve to be shot dead, he hasn't killed anyone. However when he pointed the gun at the police he signaled intent (acidentaly or otherwise) to fire.

The german police are not the only police force trained to fire in that set of circumstances.

Until long range, 100% effective (no jerking of the body, immediate incapacition) widly available stun weapons are introduced (have to be safe, can't have poeple dieing from them as it prompts the same debate) this will be the case.

Domestic dogs get better treatment in Germany than this guy did.

well if you read the following then you know how domestic dogs get treated in th US:

NOPD defends cop who shot dog

The pet Doberman Pinscher shot and killed by a police officer in the backyard of a Lakeview home charged at the officers who came to check out a house alarm, a spokeswoman for the New Orleans Police Department said Tuesday.

But Dr. Patrick Coleman, whose four-year-old dog, Jax, was repeatedly shot in the altercation, said it wasn't in his Doberman's docile temperament to lunge at strangers on his property. While Jax likely did walk out of the dog door into the yard and bark at the two officers, Coleman also said his pet was just a month into recovery after spinal surgery and not in physical condition to attack anybody.

Only a complete fool choked with hatred for the US would extrapolate such a illogical and unsupported conclusion.

BTW, for those who don't know, the author of the previous post claims to have an American wife, a US green card, and shops at US military stores.

My, what a compelling argument. At least if one ignores the fact that it's based on a completely fictional version of what happened.

Okay mister know it all... Battalion Boy was implying that domestic dogs in germany get treated better then US-personal by the german police who supposedly like to shoot them in the back... that accusation is unsubstancial and without the slightest trace of proof...
After this seems to be another rant against german authorities (because everything is so much better in the US) I posted a recent case as an example how "well" domestic dogs get treated by police in the US. If you accuse me of lying or making up the quote I posted, follow this link: NOPD dog shooting
So tell me as an ex-army member, what would you have done (if you were the policeman) when a armed offender with an M4 is running around in the woods trying to escape the authorities because he stalked, kidnapped and threathen to kill his ex-girlfriend... would you have taken the bullet , so you colleagues might be able to maybe question him later when he was caught or would you have fired at him when he turned around with the M4 in hand? Enlighten me what you would have done in such a high stress situation. And after you are such an expert with everything that has to do with the US- forces explain to me how this moron got the M4 out of his barracks...

taxidriver, look at what you posted early this morning. Your comments and posting an irrelevant link imply that the shooting of the dog is representative of the way dogs are treated in the US, which any person with a brain knows is not the case.

BB (who is an Englishman, BTW) occasionally says some mildly provocative things. You should not have taken his remarks at face value. I doubt anyone would seriously agree with what he said. pet canines do get treated very well in Germany, so what is the sense on your part (other than to express your virulent anti-US feelings) in falsely implying that dogs in the US get shot on a regular basis? None whatsoever. It has nothing to do with treatment of dogs in Germany or their treatment by German cops in comparison to the cops' treatment of Americans in Germany, which is anyhow a ridiculous juxtaposition to make.

As to whether or not the appropriate action was taken by the Polizei, I was not there and thus have no idea.

Most arms rooms are not in the barracks buildings where soldiers live, BTW. Others addressed earlier in this thread how he could have gotten the weapon out, and of course we don't have the full story on that either.

I should not take anybodys remarks at face value but whenever I post something, that does not go along with the "america is the best and can never do wrong" supporters, I have virulent anti-US feelings or like you claimed before hate the US and it"s people. On the other side there can be whole posts by morons like this one: I hate germany and they get applauded by people like Carm or that other nut Lifeisabuffet (of course yanks) who got their panties in a wad because posters didn't agree with that moron in the first place. Double standards my man... I told you before, I do not hate the US or their people, just certain elements of your society get my blood pressure going.
